if you do crunches in correct form you should really hurt after no more than 15 reps (i like to add a 5kg weight tucked under my chin which gives a nice burn)

you don't need a smith machine if you don't have a spotter.
Replace the exercises that you need a spotter for such as bench press and shoulder press with the dumbbell equivalent then if you get to failure you can just drop off to the side.

as i see it the only way it distinguishes between whether your fat or toned is by a drop down list with 6 options.. and that is going to give you a b/f %

i dont se how they could do you any harm but really do you think they are going to get you fitter and stronger?
if you wore them while doing standing jumps for basketball or kicks in Martial arts they may help but for general fitness i would say the benifits would be minimal.
