Good thing I'm not a bodybuilder...

Is this frustration, or did you actually get it checked out?
Asked the doctor about it, he said yeah, sounds like it but there's nothing that can be done. There's also really nothing else that could explain why my right arm is twice as strong/large as my left since I've never had any kind of arm injury.

And I don't see how strengthening the abdominal wall could be a bad thing, even if it doesn't help. It will still help your strengh.
That's what squats, deadlifts and overhead presses are for

If squats/deads/ohpress were enough, progressing to standing rollouts for reps wouldn't be needed. Kabuki on IA's, who deadlifted 800 at 198 put 100lbs on his deadlift at that level and he attributes it to rollout work.

And that is conveinient isn't it? Doc says that without doing any checking (they rarely do) and now it is fact.

Ok you're not the best presser in the world, but you can and should be aiming for 300. I actually saw Christian Thib writing about this saying that it could be overprotective injury mechanisms, IA has mentioned it. Doing partial rom moves is a good fix.

And thinking about it, you were starting to make progress on that Tate routine if I am not mistaken? And you're deadlift numbers suggest you are built very well for it. Usually this is at the expense of the bench, long arms etc.

There's a guy on IA's with the exact same "problem". President Fad is his screen name. He is definitely over 500, nearer 600 deadlift, maybe even over, andhis bench was still in the 200's. It is just the way he is built. He is a geared squat record holder, which means something at least.

Rant over :D

Oh sure, I'm not giving up on my presses, but I just have to accept that progress in them will come at an excruciatingly slow rate. I doubt I'll ever hit a 300 bench, but if I do I doubt it'll be sooner than 5+ years from now.

My friend just starting lifting 6 months ago, he does it half-assed, and he's already benching more than I am (although I'm squatting/deadlifting almost twice as much as he is). Oh, and my arms are way bigger than his, lol.

The Tate routine was working, but I wanted to go back to linear progression after the layoff for as long as possible. Now that I've stalled (at 175 lbs ) I plan to go back to it. I did 205x2 with a close grip just before I got the hernia, so maybe I could have done around 225 for a single with a regular grip.

There's not really any exercise you can do to strengthen your inguinal canal, unfortunately: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inguinal_hernia

I don't think standing rollouts are necessary for a big deadlift, there are guys at my gym who pull 600-750 and have never touched an ab wheel. Not saying it won't help, but I'm still making progress in my deadlift by simply doing deadlifts so I'm going to milk that as long as possible.

You can bench 300 if you put your mind to it. How much muscle you put on might be the limiting factor right enough.

Kabuki was deading around 700 I think and then progressed to standing rollouts and did 800 I believe, maybe tell those guys to start their rollouts :). Very few guys have ever done 800+ under 200. Maybe that was just his weakness right enough. Obviously they aren't a requirement, but they can help.

Regardless your deadlift is ace, if anything get 500 nailed and get on the path to 600. Have you ever tried weighted dips?

Yup, I was doing them just before I got the hernia and plan to start doing them again soon.

Squat:

3 x 5 x 245 lbs

Overhead press:

3 x 5 x 115 lbs

Deadlift:

5 x 345 lbs

All felt great. Bar was slipping out of my hands last time I deadlifted but my grip felt fine today.

What do you mean? 5 x 115 lbs is not an impressive overhead press. My all time PR on OHP has been 5 x 135 lbs, still nothing special.

Caught a cold over the weekend and missed a couple days, plus ****ed up my diet, back now…

Squat:

3 x 5 x 265 lbs

These felt like speed work.

1 arm DB overhead press:

3 x 5 x 50 lbs (per arm)

Should have gone heavier here. I noticed that when I do the left arm, a muscle in the right side of my torso (pretty sure it’s the transverse abdominis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Illu_trunk_muscles.jpg) burns like crazy. Doesn’t happen with the other arm/side. I think I am leaning too far to the right to compensate for my gimp left arm.

Deadlift:

5 x 355 lbs

These felt great.

I realize now that I was too conservative with the weight coming back from surgery. The weights are still flying up with simple linear progression. I should have started back heavier.

I felt like **** for a few days because of the cold and didn’t eat anything but soup and Gatorade. I wish this eating **** wasn't so ****ing hard, I'm not trying to be a bodybuilder so it's not like I'm force feeding myself, but I can't even seem to muster the appetite to get down a normal amount of food. My 5'5 115 lb girlfriend eats more than I do

Told you ;)

How much fibre are you getting? Could be that you are all bunged up or something. From what you have said, I doubt you eat a lot of fruits and veggies.

Maybe get some psyllium husk, I've heard good things about it on IA's. Or you could get those fibre powders you add to drinks. Better yet, eat more fruits and veggies. Were meant to get 30g a day or something.

Well, I'm not even close to my previous numbers so I think it's a little early for I told you sos

I don't pay any attention to fiber intake so I have no idea how much I am getting. I just can't stand the taste of vegetables, so I rarely eat them. They literally taste like paper to me :(

Squat:

3 x 5 x 275 lbs

Bench press:

3 x 5 x 170 lbs

Deadlift:

5 x 365 lbs

What I ate today:

1. Eggs, bacon, waffle
2. Hot dogs, baked beans
3. Ribs, french fries
4. Steak, vegetables (yes, I actually ate vegetables!)
5. Chicken with cream sauce

Also drank about 1/2 gallon of milk throughout the day. Not a very clean diet, but at least I'm eating.

Squat:

3 x 5 x 285 lbs

These felt like speed work. Some guy was quarter-squatting the same weight with the maxi pad and I worked in with him, he was taking short rest periods so I only rested 3-4 minutes a set here, still felt great.

1 arm dumbbell overhead press:

6 x 60 lbs (per side)
2 x 5 x 55 lbs (per side)

I was leaning to my right too much to compensate for the gimp arm so I lowered the weight for the next two sets.

Deadlift:

5 x 375 lbs

Felt good. I also realized why my grip felt off a couple weeks ago. I was looking at the barbells and noticed that the knurling is almost worn off on a couple of them. I must have been using one of those. Used one with fresh knurling this time and grip felt fine.

I breezed through this workout and felt great. I was only in the gym for about 45 minutes. I've only eaten 2 meals so far today because my stomach was bothering me earlier but food intake is way up. I'm also doing 1/2 GOMAD.

Squat:

3 x 5 x 295 lbs

Bench press:

3 x 5 x 175 lbs

Deadlift:

4 x 385 lbs

I went to my school gym today because I was already on campus, and I forgot to bring my chalk :( I couldn’t hold onto the bar with my gimp hand because of it, so this was more like 4 singles with short rest periods to wipe my hands off. After dropping the bar during the descent on the last 2 reps and getting the people who work there all pissed off at me, I decided to call it a day. This would have been easy if I had remembered to bring my chalk :(

Very solid increases in your workouts m8. If you are keeping good form on the exercises then two really big thumbs up for your progress. Slapping on that much weight every time is impressive.

I feel you on the chalk, they don't allow it in my gym which forces me to do deads as the first thing before my hands get sweaty.

Keep up the good work and be careful with form :)

Great progress so far bro... Good to see your poundages back up following your injury. How is everything feeling? I'd hate to see you get hurt again.

I'm really just getting back to where I was before I got a hernia. That's why I'm able to increase the weight so quickly.

Everything feels fine, although with my genetics it's probably only a matter of time before I blow out the other side. The surgeon did say the other side looked weak. And with my luck, it'll probably be right when I get back to my previous numbers :( I'll just have to go back in and have the other side fixed when it happens.
