Alright, this is bound to offend tons of people on this board, but its something alot of you really need to hear, so here goes nothing!

Its seems these days that everyone (especially this board) has "social anxiety", "depression" or some other bullshyt. Gentlemen, this stuff is way over diagnosed!

I was diagnosed with manic depression when I was 10. I tried drugs (prozac and the likes) for the first 2-3 years and then decided that I didn't want a crutch, I wanted to either live with myself naturally or beat it myself.

I would say about 2-3 years ago I decided that I was really tired of being so unhappy and decided I was gonna try to be happy. It was tough to do at first but I kept at it because I wanted to be happy.

After coming here I learned of a book called Pycho Cybernetics - by Maxwell Maltz, I've probably mentioned this book a hundred times on this board and its for a reason. Through will power and this book I have beat depression without the use of drugs.

Furthermore, I don't think I had depression, I don't really think it exists in a medical sense. Most people these days are unhappy, due to thinking negatively all the time. The medical world sees this and a great opportunity for profit. See where I'm going with this?? Chemical imbalace my ass! My beef with prozac when I was 13 was that I felt that the depression was just how I worked, that it was part of my personality, and it was to an extent, but your personality and the way you think can be changed.

"Social Anxiety"...Ha! Now the world of medicine is taking advantage of the next biggest peice of the brain sickness pie. If it were popular back when I was diagnosed with depression, I would have most certainly been diagnosed with "Social Anxiety" also.

Past events, and genetics shape who you become. They now speculate that most traits you have are encoded into your genome and that characteristic of you is triggered to be released from your DNA when a certain thing happens at a certain time. Thats what shapes who you become.

While thats interesting and all, it doesn't coincide with the fact that people can change their personality traits later on. But whatever, thats a whole nother discussion altogether.

What I'm trying to get at here is that people are using these "diseases" as excuses to move on with their lives. And thats precicely whats holding them back!

I believe that the traits of these "brain diseases" are caused by not living your life to its fullest. We all have limitless potential, but most of us don't use it. I think that is a big part of what causes these traits to come about, this coupled with past experience.

But getting to the point, nobody is gonna beat these "diseases" if they keep using them as excuses for why they fail. Own the fvck up! Stop placing blame and start moving past bad times.

I look at everything I do these days, good or bad, as a chance to grow as a chance to grow as a person. Experience builds character. "Every failure is one step closer to success" repeat that to yourself whenever you start to place blame on your failures, and your faults.

I want others to become strong. Everyone asks for help with stuff that had they put alittle of thought into it, they could have figured out for themselves.

Stop asking for help and for pete's sake, learn to help yourself! Grow strong!

You have limitless potential, use it.

AMEN.

Jesus, some of you need to take a look at this, stop whining and feeling sorry for yourself.

It could be worse - you could be dead.

Yup -- I agree, there comes a point in time where you have to quit feeling like crap and just get out there and do something about it. I was on medications once, they made me worse! The best treatment for depression is excercise I have discovered. Go out a get a book on cognitive-behavioral therapy. There are so many things one can do, just get out there and do it!

While there are people that are depressed because of chemical imbalances, these people are rare. We all get depressed in our lives. A lot of the DJ's here are depressed because of their failure with women. Improving your mindset REALLY helps.

Good post Mystery.

Those terms are not total bull****... the part of my brothers brain that reads body language and deciphers non-verbal communication doesn't work. Hence he has social anxiety, because he cannot understand the moods of conversations he is involved in unless people actually say keystone words ['I am so pissed' for example].

However... I doubt that many other poeple have what he does, and you are just being pussies and sitting around being sorry for yourselves.

My brother doesn't take medicine and I when we go out people usually cant tell he has problems with communication [nonverbal]. Why? Because he uses what he has, verbal communication, very well, and the tries his best to make due. If my brother can do it with a malfunctioning part of the brain, you all should definatly be able to.

Chewy Bagel:

This post certainly is not ignorant to what depression can truely do. When I was young everyone around me thought I had "True Depression" except me. At the same time I attempted suicide when I was 12. You tell me if I had an extreme case or not...

This post is spoken through someone that has been through it.

MoAF:

I didn't mention in my post that perhaps some people do suffer from disorders like these, but I did mention that they are horribly over-diagnosed.

Perhaps your brother do suffer from this, but for the most part, most people that have been diagnosed with these disorders do not have them and are getting squeezed for money by Phd's.

Congratulations on overcoming an obstical, however not everyone is as fortunate as you and they should not be condemned for it. You are the minority, not the majority in a case of true depression.

Why the hell am I the minority?? Because so many people are content hiding behind their "Depression badge"! I'm not anything special. I simply stopped feeling sorry for myself and took care of the problem.

I don't want a pat on the back for what I've done, thats not why I did it. Now I want others to snap out of it, stop hiding behind this and that, and to take care of the problem.

Thats all.

Damn good book. It was written by the late, great Dr. Maltz in the Fifties, yet it's still pertinent and effective to this day.

He was a plastic surgeon who was uniquely qualified to write that book, as it was inspired by his experiences with his patients.

Biochemistry

I was depressed as hell on account of biochemistry: removing allergic foods from my diet turned my moods around almost 180 degrees. Before doing that, asking me to not be depressed was like asking a 400 lb person to run a marathon.

Depression can have psychological or biochemical roots, usually being some combination of both.

The best thing to do is to find out what's most out of balance, and correct that first. For me, biochemistry was running the show. Correcting that made the rest much easier.

I totally agree that a lot of disorders are WAY over-diagnosed or mis-diagnosed. Psycho meds wouldn't have done jack for me.

I get what your saying MM.

Last fall I had to get on paxil because I was having anxiety attacks. It happend when I was driving and when I was at work.

It had to be nipped in the bud because it wasn't anything I could do. But in january I stopped taking it for three reasons.

1. Because I couldn't ***. I truely understand why women get pissed at men. When a man cums in 30 secs and she doesn't. It is wack.

2. Because I wanted to overcome this own my own.

3. Because it made me feel like fvckin rocky 24/7. I thought I was gods gift to women I thought I could do anything. I checked my old post when I was on paxil. They were so ****y it was crazy.

Now I get depressed I'm depressed right now. I broke my cell phone I got bills out the azz. But I don't need meds to fvckin get me over from one day to the next. I just have to grin and bare it.

Mr. Mystery I think the post is really good.

Yes, Chewy. You are truly correct.

Mystery, please realize that you are the minority in cases of medical depression. I emphasize medical depression here to distinguish it from the nonpathological condition everyone goes through at some point in their life.

If you could see the horror stories I have to deal with on a daily basis concerning medically ill patients who do not take their medication, you will probably have to fight an every day struggle not to become depressed.

Non-compliance with medication for people diagnosed with not just mental illness but any illness is one of the biggest hurdles in health care. A lot of time no compliance = death.

I am happy that you seem to have overcome your condition and seem to be doing well without medication but please do not encourage the public to do this. There are grave consequences to not seeking medical attention for illnesses or not complying with medications. Matter-of-fact, I have just completed writing an article on this very same subject detailing one of those horror stories last night.

I agree with Mr. Mystery on this subject. The power of your mind is limitless. Look, many of you guys have made it this far. You found the DJ site, in one way or another, because you were looking for tips on becoming better at attracting the opposite sex (hopefully). The only thing stopping you from talking to a girl is not some social phobia or depression, it's YOU. Despite your lack of confidence or experience the only way you're going to get anything accomplished is to just go for it. Do it anyway. You'll fall flat on your face and you can either crumble or laugh it off. You decide. I already have, now it's your turn.

Yeah, but lets just face it, some people have actual genetic diseases that can only be corrected through the use of science/medication.

Hey, if someone brain doesn't produce a particular enzyme or hormone or doesn't produce enough of that enzyme or hormone, all the positive thinking in the world is not going to make their brain produce it. It doesn't matter how many websites they read, how much emotional support they have, or how much they truly believe in themselves, the deficiency
must be compensated for through medication. It doesn't take a doctor to
gain that insight but maybe some lessons in genetics and physiology may help.

If your body is not making enough of it or any of it, you have to pop a pill to get it. Bottom Line.

I was having mad anxiety attacks last year, i went to a counseler and got some help. After like 3 sessions he was mentioning drugs i was like fukk that. And i got over them myself. Your mind is very powerful, negative thinking is like a snow ball effect, one small thought can trigger disaster.

The parties are both right. They only argue because they fear not looking consistent.

1. Depression and other mind diseases are Over-diagnosed (Mystery's main point). We can all imagine people exaggerating symptoms.

2. Do not use this post if medication Does benefit you (Mystery's post is more of a rant and self-serving rather than medical advice. He dislikes negative people.).

The bottomline is use medication if it helps you. If you are over-reliant on them (taking them in itself is negative recognition that you have a problem) then try stopping if your doctor agrees.

In supporting Mystery's point, if you are a naturally negative or external person, those traits are more of a disadvantage than you may realize.
