Some folks have actual physiological abnormalities and others simply worry too much. If you are just a worry wart, do whatever is right for you to live a happy life. If you have an abnormality that is an actual physical problem within your body, by all means, seek professional help.
By professional I mean people who are educated and experienced individuals that makes a living of taking care of these sort of problems rather than someone who just have a personal testimony. The professional sees hundreds of personal testimonies each year whereas someone with a personal testimony only know what works for them.

Currently, my family is having one hell of a time getting one of my brothers to take his meds and he believes he doesn't need them. He think he can just overcome it mentally but we can see that he needs the meds.

I recently read Maltz, Mr. Mystery---good book. He doesn't give a "technique" as such, so you have to think about it and put it to use on your own. This is good, because then you OWN it.

Good rant. These are needed from time to time.

I don't agree when you say social anxiety and depression are not real, as I've suffered through both and am still working my way out of social anxiety. However, I do agree that a positive mindset will help you. I've made significant progress ever since I really decided I wanted to start changing my life. Others, though, aren't as fortunate and do need meds. Furthermore, someone who is feeling depressed can't simply be told to stop feeling depressed. It's important for these people to take it one step at a time because they truly cannot imagine themselves being a really happy person that you suggest they should be. Some good points here, but don't oversimplify real problems.

Excellent book. And not just for someone is depressed. It's not like the typical pop psych self help stuff out there. It is real science adapted for everyday use by everyday people. You all know how important your attitude is but this book teaches what makes attitude work.

I also have some controversial views on mental diseases and many other things that branch off of that, but I don't feel like getting into it so I'll just leave it with that.

In order to appreciate happiness, I believe we have to know depression in order to have a standard for calibration.

Modern human physiologists certainly know a lot about how the body works, yet at the same time their lack of knowledge completely dwarfes what they think they know.

There are some mental conditions such as PMS and multiple-personality disorder which research has suggested are socially constructed. Namely, they wouldn't exist if the media did not continually barage its viewers with Opera-esque puerility. Because viewers are convinced they exist, these people actually believe they have them and thus act accordingly, even though there is no real basis for the existence of symptoms other than society saying so.

Thus, it is entirely possible that media focus on social anxiety and depression as well as the efforts of drug companies to medicate every little human condition that is slightly uncomfortable has aggravated the existing or presumedly existing condition of depression in our society.

I felt that the depression was just how I worked, that it was part of my personality, and it was to an extent, but your personality and the way you think can be changed.

Stop placing blame and start moving past bad times.

I look at everything I do these days, good or bad, as a chance to grow as a chance to grow as a person. Experience builds character.

I want others to become strong. Everyone asks for help with stuff that had they put alittle of thought into it, they could have figured out for themselves.
AMEN. this is what i preach to others who are bitter and content in their misery.

I 've been diagnosed manic depressive as well. Over diagnosed. Right now, that doesn't matter. What matters is what i (a person does) to find his or her happiness.
Life is tough, and we all react to it different. I take meds, i use them as a crutch, only to help me stand up a bit taller. See the light sort of speak. Life is short......f#ck it, if your all using this method of talk to figure out s#it, then your crutch is the same (somewhat) as taking you medication

No point to this.......just another view for you all

So much has to do with biochemistry

I had no idea what depression was all about until I found out just how much it has to do with brain biochemistry.

If someone's brain is not producing enough of the right chemicals, all the positive influences in the world will not make them happy. For example, I've never know a single heavy user of cocaine who was not neurotically depressed as a result. Coke fries the neurotransmitters.

Quite a while back, the person I formerly was was so depressed he thought about killing himself all the time. That person was wandering around in a strange altered state of consciousness -- kind of like a bad acid trip -- and chanced into a used book shop. He purchased 2 books on recovering depression. One was a Dale Carnegie-type book of psychological approaches to attitude adjustment, and another was about nutritional supplementation to boost the production of mood-elevating brain chemicals.

Being a believer in psychology and the power of the mind, ex-me had a go at the positive thinking approach first. But it was to no avail. Ex-me felt just as lousy as before. But then ex-me started reading about the nutrition and brainchemicals, and started to tkae the B-vitamins, vitamin C, and up the content of the necessary amino acids... and ... within 2 weeks, had a much, much better attitude. Not to mention feeeling a lot better physically and reversing the hair loss that had started.

Ex-me was then converted, and sought as much info about brain biochemistry as he could find, which eventually led to a diagnosis he was being messed up by chronic infections and food allergies, which caused severe mental effects. Then, after getting rid of the infections (which were the result of normal intestinal bacteria being wiped out by antibiotics that were prescribed when ex-me had mono) and eliminating the allergic foods, the new me emerged, with a totally different attitude.

Positive thinking is all well and fine, but without enough of the right brain chemicals, it's damn near impossible.

That said, certain dignoses are "wastebasket diagnoses," into which too many people's cases are tossed. A conventional practitioner might have diagnosed ex-me as schizophrenic, without even a clue about food allergies. There are so many ways one can get depressed...

When I was 16, I got knifed in the face, which knocked me into a nasty depression. I was depressed b4 (due to being bullied all my life, and my father disapearing from my life), but this was the icing on the cake. The worse part was, the kid who knifed me was 13. My mind kept thinking, if a little kid can do this and almost leave me blind in 1 eye, at day time, for no reason, what would happen leaving the house at night? I felt so, so weak. Plus my appearance still looked bad. No luck at all with girls (all afcs have is luck). All m friends disapeared, my best mate went, and joined the army. Everyday I went home, after college, and spent endless hours alone, weekends were the worse.

By the age of 18, my body was starting to look better and my energy was up. 6 months later I was reading a magazine, which had a book called the concise art of seduction. I bought this book, and this is where it all began. I then went on bb.com and found that PUA thread, which got me here. Many girls followed, I found myself, and become the guy I always wanted to be (well I'm still not there yet, but not far off).
