Others lie to themselves to make themselves feel comfortable

You cool with me referencing this post in a few months or so Jay?

I mean, we just had an election blatantly stolen

And tech, which is where all of those jobs are that you mention, is nowhere listed on Maslow's Hierarchy, last time I checked...

One easy solution is to reduce the workweek with all of the impending automation, however that might deprive you of relative status...
Sure, feel free to reference it. I am not saying there are not hard times ahead or there isn't going to be massive turmoil. My point it is, put yourself in the best position to ride it out. I agree there is massive corruption in all of power structures in political, media, finance. etc. We have a number of long term cycles converging right now. Decide what side of society you want to be on and take action. There is also a lot opportunity when markets become dislocated. I do not think its futile for 99.99% of people
You think 50% of the population is just going to wither away and die? Tribalism/gangs are going to skyrocket.... Get enough desperate people together, and they'll overtake warehouses of supplies...
I don't know about wither away and die, we will have to see how it plays out.

stats can always be manipulated, from politifact:

“For England and Wales, we added together three crime categories: "violence against the person, with injury," "most serious sexual crime," and "robbery." This produced a rate of 775 violent crimes per 100,000 people.

For the United States, we used the FBI’s four standard categories for violent crime that Bier cited. We came up with a rate of 383 violent crimes per 100,000 people.”

Using per capita numbers and normalizing for other mismatches in data is always important.
The article above is bout all violent crime, not just just gun. The issue is violence not how it was carried out. A gun is a tool, like a ball peen hammer.

“An armed society is a polite society”

UK murder rate from homicide 35 times lower
U.K. murder rate 1/5th of the USA
all categories of violent crime other than sexual assault lower in US (fractionally in terms of SA) and petty crime slightly higher.

it doesn’t stack up if you get into stats, but slogans are fine I guess.

Just notice on last years date The us gun homicides rate is 669 times UK.

FBI categories

In the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

this is a far narrower definition than uk

care to address the murder rate?

I don't know.... I think I'd rather get killed by a gun toting gang banger here in America than a machete toting "refugee" on your side of the pond... Death by firearms sounds better than death by machete....

Not particularly you and your countrymen have been so emasculated for so long it would be like talking to a wall.

The Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (gee let’s call ourselves Windsors, the kids will love it!) tribe has you over a barrel.

Don’t worry if your shores are threatened again we’ll spend our lifeblood defending you as we have more than once. Americans keep their promises. And your antecedents didn’t seem to have an issue when those savage, gun toting Americans came to Europe to save your collective arses.

My bestie is a limey from the Lake District, at least up there men are vaguely still able to be men.

Guns are also important to protect us from our own government too. Will make them think twice before doing something that happened in Australia.

I read that the real Crocodile Dundee went down in a blaze of glory by refusing to surrender his firearms.... That's the American spirit...

I still like to use this analogy:

“I can kill more people in a public setting with a ballpeen hammer than an Ak-47. Imagine walking into a warehouse store like Home Depot here in the US (big box warehouse style department store). Walk to. The tool area and grab a heavy ball peen or framers clawed hammer. Walk down the aisles quietly and brain everyone you see. Before anyone notices or hears anything you’ve killed 20-30 folks. Drop the hammer and go out the front door. You can’t do this with an ak-47. Guns are tools, they are no more inherently evil than a tape measure.”

You essentially upped your VALUE in her eyes by showing her that, if she wants you, she has to at times do things that you like to do. You are SOMETHING after all. You are NOT FREE. If she wants to hang with you, it's going to cost her something — time, effort, money.

According to cbs the motive wasn't known, as he attacked neighbors or something.. I don't remember where I read it that it was due to resisting gun confiscation... CBS isn't really the beacon of honest reporting...

There is a growing subset of companies, institutions and stock market insiders that are saying the recession fears are being way overblown and that we will see a slow down but likely not a recession.

.

LOL

So you think they are telling you the truth because these entities always have the consumer and general publics interest at heart don't they

they COULDN'T possibly be telling you to look over here whilst actually moving in a different direction

Stabbingin U.K. 285 in 2018 (latest data I could find)

The US has roughly 4.95 times the pop of U.K. (320/65M)

US murder by stabbing 1,739 in 2020.

285 X 4.95 = 1,403.

If anything, you’re slightly more likely to suffer a fatal stabbing in the US.

AK47s are tools are designed to kill or injure people.

A tape measure is a tool for measuring distances.

thanks

Im not interested in any of that, and I won’t rise to it. We are debating the merits of firearm ownership.

There are plenty still saying the market is going to crash so I'm not sure what your point is. It can't be both, so one group will be wrong.

You are so obsessed at turning everything into some conspiracy theory or how someone is trying to fvck you you can't even think straight. Must be a really sh!tty way to live life.

Your negativity must be like a fvcking anchor to anyone who has to actually spend time with around you.

Thank God I'm not one of them. I'd run not walk away.

There is some merit to that, but this would be borne out by disarmed publics worldwide in countries where there was prohibition being ruled by tyrannical dictators. This clearly isn’t the case. It might be the case in some future scenario.

As I’ve said, the US has its own unique position and is in a position where it isn’t able to turn back.

it’s fine if Americans believe gun ownership is a part of their unique culture and feel safer owning a weapon.

it’s purely notions that gun ownership makes a society safer, more polite or whatever, it doesn’t make sense and isn’t backed by stats.

this is why you tend to get quite angry responses, people tend to defend irrational beliefs strongly, especially when there’s national pride at stake, and Americans generally have excessive national pride

Assuredly you wouldn't because after one or two people you'd be tackled to the ground by other people who witnessed what you did.

These fantasy land situations people come up with to convince themselves in their own mind that guns aren't the problem don't ever play out, but the ones where people take weapons designed to kill other people(per a retired army general who says ian AR 15 is a military weapon and anyone claiming otherwise is full of crap or just using semantics) play out ad nauseum over and over again and people are seemingly cool with kids being killed.

I am starting to think it's a mental illness in this country with gun cult or gun obsession. Or an addiction like an addiction to meth or heroin or crack. Gun junkies that will do anything to get their fix...even sacrifice kids.

It's a complicated issue with not a one size fits all solution. With where society is I would never give up my guns for multiple reasons. Even if banned, criminals would have them and it is too entrenched in society. I think the govt aspect is a huge piece of it too
