When parents used to decide what boy was right for their daughter, birth control wasn't necessary. Given free will, females post-arranged marriage days are TERRIBLE deciders or at making crisp judgements on the character of the males they show their wares to, thus unnatural birth control pills are necessary to give their wary swaying minds more time to decide if this man is right for her and her offspring.
