Conspiracy theories are rather uninteresting, per se. What is interesting is why are some people prone to conspiratorial thinking and how do their thought processes go awry. Dumb idiocy is not an academically satisfying answer, as many are smart individuals and for the more complicated conspiracy theories you must be smart to follow along; we have people with doctorates, such as Steven Jones of BYU and David Ray Griffen, so not only is intelligence not a shield against nonsense but a catalyst. (Ask any magician who is the easiest audience to fool, a room of Harvard professors.)

I think conspiracy theorists have a tendency to suffer what psychologists term an external locus of control. They feel life happens TO THEM, randomly and beyond their control. Conversely, people with an internal locus of control feel they determine the course of their life. When a major destructive event occurs, such as the assassination of a president by a lone gunman nobody or terrorists with box knives, they can't fathom how something so small and simple can, in a beat of the drum, bring down something so big and great; there must have been an overriding system, some secret society or flying spaghetti monster armed with kitchen knives, which guided it to happen. They need someone controlling their life, even if it's someone they don't like.

There are at least several sociological groups of people where wild conspiracy theories run rampant: the poor, ethnic minorities, teenagers, and criminals.

• It should be too self-explanatory why the poor and people with repetitive criminal activities are high-risk groups.
• Ethnic minorities are genuinely discriminated against and do tend to comprise of a disproportionately large segment of lower income brackets.
• Teenagers are interesting. They have matured out of the age where they will believe anything and are beginning to think on their own, but have a mostly underdeveloped filter for filtering out bad ideas. They want to exert their independence and integrate with society but are socially, educationally, and occupationally limited.

For the most part, for most people, as one achieves greater social stratification, security and enrichment in their lives, conspiratorial thinking naturally goes away. In this framework it's readily apparent why SoSuave is particularly a target, because (#1) you have teenagers who (#2) can't get laid.
