More feel-good nonsense from the new purveyor of nonsense on SS.
The sun lets us produce Vitamin D which cures 70% of all cancers. We are creatures of the sun. We are supposed to go outside and have the sun shine on us for one hour every day, with no sunscreen. Sunscreen is toxic. I lived at the beach nearly my whole life and never wore sunscreen (just read the ingredients - Titanium Dioxide? Anything you put on your skin gets absorbed into your liver). I'm about 47 and people think I'm about 38. There is a reason people with a tan look healthier.
No, the solution is to get enough nutrition and your skin will heal itself properly. The sun doesn't age you, your poor diet does.
I agree Neil about Vitamin D. I've actually done research on it in industry. But you don't need an hour in peak sun. And one should never use tanning beds, which lots of people did when you & I were young adults. I never wear sunscreen myself and I get some sun. But in peak sun hours this time of year say in Phoenix, a fair person like me gets burned within about 15 minutes. So I do not stay in direct sun in the middle of the day for more than 10 minutes or so. Early morning or late afternoon exposure is better, there is more atmosphere filtering the sun at those hours, so UV exposure is reduced but your skin can still make vitamin D with the filtered rays. Didn't realize I needed to give a science lesson
.
It is well known that too much sun significantly ages the skin. The research is easy to find.
My company does a lot of derm studies on skin cancers among other things. Trust me they have much more skin cancer in AZ than in IL. In the Midwest the farmers are most likely to get it. Usually on face & forearms/hands from long term exposure in the fields. In AZ people have it everywhere.
So it's a balance. Moderation in exposure, avoiding peak hours where UV rays are most direct, and getting enough Vitamin D (which you can also get through diet if you are paying attention.)
