Your favorite Metal band?

^^ I know this lawyer who's obsessed with Opeth. He loves a lot of other prog stuff as well.

I don't like my music too simple nor too complicated.

I have to go with Tool as my all time favorite band. Maynard was actually called "the greatest voice in all music" by Rolling Stone magazine. I don't care what magazines say but his voice is completely amazing.


Plus most of his songs are about evolution, change, higher powers, anal sex, hallucinogenic states, or his odd Oedipal relationship with his mother...

If he was on American Idol, he could shred the audience in a million pieces with his voice. Yes, he's that good.

All TooL/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer fans know this.

He's also the ultimate Don Juan. Banging Victoria's Secret Models on his APC tours and never getting married. Plus he raised his son Devo all by himself.

Forgot to mention. The drummer of Tool is so amazing that in the latest album his right hand is playing a rithym in one time signature, his left arm is playing in a different sig, his right leg is playing in an even dif sig, and his left leg is playing in a completely dif sig... all at the same time!

Hell yeah man. Tool ****ing rocks. I saw them live and it was the best concert I've ever been to. Danny Carey is insane, probably top 5 drummers of all time. mjk is really weird though, but in a good way.

personally i think megadeth is way better than metallica.

the difference in the bands is that metallica's songs were always about other people - they were stories in a way. most of their songs are third person narrative. more about the beat and the story than personal things.

megadeth songs were always about personal emotion - the individuals feeling towards life. most of their songs are first person narratives. a lot like nine inch nails if you will.

megadeths music was a lot more angry than metallicas. megadeth is a 'f*ck you, f*ck the government, f*ck this world of idiots.' kind of music - punk metal if you will.

whereas metallica was always 'grrr, look how angry i can be. yay, i love testosterone rushes." - mainstream metal.

megadeth is closer to the sex pistols and metallica is closer to ozzy osborne.

metallica was 'look at my new cool tattoo of a skull.' while megadeth was 'f*ck tattoos, look at the grenade i've got in my hand and the grenade pin between my teeth - BOOM"

Interesting point, but as far as musicality and interesting music, Metallica in the 80's (and well into the 90's) just clobbered Megadeth, who had some awesome songs surrounded by garbage (50fvcking2 anyone!?). I love both bands but there's a reason why Megadeth is always #2 behind Metallica.

Opeth is awesome though. I wish I could see them with Dream Theater, Between The Buried & Me, and 3 this summer...should be a killer show...:moon:

Oh Dream Theater. Once a great, succinct progressive rock band that single handedly revived a long-dead genre from the 70s. Now they are a bunch of wanking noodlers.

Dream Theater songs after Scenes from a Memory go something like this:

Petrucci: chunky heavy metal riff that's been done better years ago by someone else.

Portnoy: drum fill ever 4 measures.

Rudess: prances atop with circus music.

Myung: inaudible, as usual

LaBrie: the weathered voice of a long-since-adequate diva, spouting out lyrics about hot topics such as vampires.

This goes on for 10 minutes too long.

There will always be the fight: people who like raw, in your face, wouldtsound this good if it were played at a keg party music vs. polished, produced, music.

Gimme raw shyt anyday. Kill 'em all is the only metallica I even listen to anymore.

So far So good So what, Peace sells, and Rust in Piece are some of the best albums ever. I dont like any other Megadeth after that though.

Nobodys mentioned Iron Maiden yet. Killers, Powerslave, # of the beast, Piece of mind. All great albums, but Maiden made a lot of crap too.

Slayers first five albums...Come on!!

As for "others:' How bout Napalm Death, Deicide, Boltthrower, Gwar(If you consider it metal), Sepultura was good, M.O.D., S.O.D.

I dont understand people cutting down those bands old albums because they were inferiorly recorded. All these new "metal" bands, or old legendary bands making crappy new albums rely on production, and polishing, and effects and all that fake bullshyt to sell records, can all suck a fat one. A REAL band can crank out an album in a basement with pawn shop equipment on an old 8 track, and people will STILL love it 20 years later. If todays bands would stop trying to be trendy (Korn , disturbed, syndrome-I mean-Symptom of a down, and technical and art-faggy, like Tool, (yeah, you can play weird time signatures, WE GET IT, start rockin already), than MAYBE, todays music might stand a chance.

Metal has always been notorious for embracing masculinity and being anti-AFC, except for the 80's Pop Metal and Nu-Metal, which isn't even real METAL as far as I'm concerned.

Metallica may be more popular then Megadeth, but they certainly are not better. Megadeth has always been the better band and their music is faster and a hell of a lot more complex then Metallica, who get way too much credit for the past when they haven't done anything of note in more then ten years. Megadeth just unfortunately didn't write the ultimate watered down, MTV Metal disc, The Black Album.

The list btw is pretty horrendous. What is Lamb of God doing there? Might as well have substituted it with Anthrax and you'd have the big 4 from the Bay Area Thrash scene. A great substitute would have been Anal C*nt, the funniest band ever

I think their cover of Anarchy In the U.S.A was unnecessary on So Far, So Good, So What? though in regards to the Sex Pistols..

When I was younger I used to be a bigger Metallica fan then Megadeth. However, now it's the opposite. I still listen to the early Metallica albums, but I just can't get over the fact their a bunch of posers and crooks. If you want to see where the song 'Enter Sandman' came from, download the song 'Tapping into the Emotional Void' by Excel. And that's just one of the many.

Anyway, here are some other good bands I haven't seen mentioned Exodus, Testament, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate.

Kamelot, Epica, Dragonforce, Within Temptation, Rhapsody of Fire.. hmm I gotta go with Nightwish as my favorite, both new and old.

All great bands, especially Kamelot and Rhapsody of Fire. Here are some more:

Edguy, Blind Guardian (and Demons and Wizards), Symphony X, Avantasia, Ayeron, Shadow Gallery, Rob Rock, QUEENSRYCHE (just don't get anything past Promised Land), Pain Of Salvation, Circus Maximus, Fates Warning, Nevermore, MANOWAR (greatest cheese metal ever), Dream Evil, Judas Priest (Godfathers of metal), Jag Panzer, Iced Earth, Into eternity, Dokken, Hammerfall, Vanden Plas....to just name a few that weren't mentioned

Dream Theater rocks, but i think it's a special taste for some. You know, like people who like good complicating thought provoking riff crunching keyboard soaring bass thundering drum pounding goodness. With an extremely good singer to boot.

I like Opeth as a death melodic progressive band occasionally, but most other death bands just sound ridiculous. The guitars are always awesome, but you can't understand a damn word they are singing, and when you find out what they are saying it's just belittling or attacking religion, government, hurting others, raping women blah blah blah...sick $hit. It's headache inducing...if someone could introduce me to some death that doesn't do that, it would be nice.

Megadeth I've always liked better because of Dave's voice. His music is often more entertaining than Metallica's style. Metallica's best stuff was stolen from him. Metallica is still a great band, but Dave Mustaine kicks a$$
