My friends are beginning to wonder why I dont play basketball anymore. I'm trying to keep it a secret that i'm taking creatine and protein whey to bulk up, lol. I still play, like once a week though, just so they dont get any ideas. =]

You can do some mild cardio after a workout to help transport waste products (lactic acid, carbon dioxide etc) from the muscles. But this is a time for mild cardio rather than the HIIT which many on here seem to think is the only sort you should do. HIIT by its very nature doesnt actually take you very far into your aerobic threshold (if at all) but rather your anerobic and lactic acid thresholds so works by stimulating the metabolism more than
anything else. So the mild cardio I mentioned in this situation is more to assist recovery.

Also, one day off per week is not enough. Sure, train the upper body one workout and the lower the next but take a complete day off between workouts so you are only in the gym every other day.

Personally I dont like to run no matter what. I think it is too catabolic. It wasnt 100% clear from your post - I assume you dont just run on your lower body day?!

I said hope you DONT just run ie you hit the weights hard too - squats if you are limited to equipment. Buy or make some squat stands.

In the gym, working out, whatever - figure of speech

I am in the same situation. I am trying to add about 10lbs of muslce mass, but I am bothered by my gut and slight love handles that are appearing. I realized having a crummmy lower body, obscures the good work of the upper body. I am still not sure what to do.

Quit thinking about and just start training - hard. The best routine in the world aint gonna do any good if its just in your head or on a piece of paper, just get on with it. If you opt for one way and after a fair and honest crack it isnt doing it then try something else, you have to experiment and see what works for you.

Cardio deplets muscle. If your body fat is quite low, there is no need for cardio to cut. Of course, if you want to make yourself overall fitter cardio is good for that.

But true body builders wont do cardio once they reach a fat percentage, therfore they are also terribly unfit and probably couldn't run 50m without loss of breath!

Hey, I'm not an expert in this, but I do know quite a bit about cardio and pumping your muscles.

Allow me to explain with an example.

I do Sanshou (picture Muah Tai with throws included, and a little less use of the knees, since we rather throw then knee). And when you fight a tournament it's 3 minutes for every round. And that is VERY tiring, and EXTREMELY long ! So before a tournament or even a single fight I get an entire program for 3 months in advance. I'm talking cardio to the max. Plus also loads of weight lifting etc...

What happens is I do not gain any weight, or barely any weight, but I get alot faster, waaay better condition, wins the fight in most cases, and I just look 'tight' instead of bulky. Still looks good imho :)

Muscles eat alot, and when you go running, do cardio etc.. you're burning energy for other reasons then pumping up your muscles. If you want to bulk up, you'll notice you have to eat a lot, maybe even drink weird shakes, and NOT run or something. That's just it.

BULK UP!

If your a naturally skinny guy or hardgainer. You want to Conserve every single calorie you gain That's critical when you want to gain weight, don't you? Cardio is really about getting your heart pumping and pounding. It's recommended to Weight loss/ cutting up.

Keep The Calories

Cardio will use up your Calories. How can you bulk up when you're using them up? "ABSOLUTELY NO F*CKING CARDIO" :D

u'll loose weight if u go upto 75% to 85% of Maximum Heart Rate..
This is the Target Range or Zone that you want to stay in when doing any type of cardiovascular (aerobic) activity. When in this range your body is getting an optimum workout with maximum benefit, and it stays in a Fat Burning mode.
there r basically three zones...
light rate(50-60/65 of MHR)
medium(60/65 - 85/90 of MHR)
maxumin(90< MHR)

u will less or none weight in first zone...

MHR=Maximum Heart Rate
Here are some examples of target zone calculations assuming a normal person aged 25 with a resting heart rate of 65 bpm.

Using the general formula :-

HRmax = 220 - 25 = 195 bpm

70% = 195 x 0.7 = 136.5 bpm

90% = 195 x 0.9 = 175.5 bpm

Lol...I am in the exact situation. Unfortuantely, we can't have our cake and eat it too. I think we have to focus on one and then the other...can't do both at once.

I have been lifting for 8 weeks (4-5 days a week), look a little more defined, but have not gained any weight. I do have a bit of a gut that I want to lose. I took off lifting this week (they say after about 8 weeks, take a week off) but did some cardio.

You see, if we do cardio when we want to bulk up, you will just be burning those calories and depleting some muscle so DON"T DO IT. Focus on buiding mass and bulk (which I will do for the next 5 weeks) and then focus on the GUT! Good Luck

I dunno about this stuff people are talking about, but any kind of pro fighter (boxing, ufc, kickboxing, etc.) does cardio like crazy and most of them are muscly as hell.

Yeah and those boxers were probably naturally mesomorphic. These are the ones who already were at least medium weight.

If you're a skinny bastard like me, cardio will screw you up without question if you want to get bulk.

No fuking cardio

Cardio is catabolic as hell.. why not just cut your muscle off with a damn knife..?

Anything but HIIT cardio is a waste anyway for a bodybuilder..

Tiggis, what exactly is this HIIT thing you write about all the time?

It sounds pretty interesting but I have no idea about this program or whatever it is.

What I've used to bulk up without gaining fat in the past, is this:

6-7 meals a day, 2-3 of which are whey protein shakes. There are some good shakes with minimal carbs and super-absorbant protein at good low prices...that don't taste too bad either. Look for Optimum protein at keysupplements.com...

When it comes to carbs, WHITE is BAD. Rice, bread, pasta, potatos, pizza, bagels...all that good stuff. I'm trying to eliminate as much of these from my diet as possible. I eat more vegetables as a source of carbohydrates. And when I must have bread, it's wheat bread, the darker and grainier the better. Don't make the mistake (like I did) of skipping the carbs altogether and eating all meat.

Your muscles NEED CARBS. Learn to eat vegetables, and lots. Green beans, broccoli, peapods, peppers, you name it. Try steaming broccoli with a little olive oil and soy sauce, it's a good trick to making it more eatable.

Hope I've helped.
