When it comes to carbs, WHITE is BAD. Rice, bread, pasta, potatos, pizza, bagels...all that good stuff. I'm trying to eliminate as much of these from my diet as possible. I eat more vegetables as a source of carbohydrates. And when I must have bread, it's wheat bread, the darker and grainier the better. Don't make the mistake (like I did) of skipping the carbs altogether and eating all meat.

Your muscles NEED CARBS. Learn to eat vegetables, and lots. Green beans, broccoli, peapods, peppers, you name it. Try steaming broccoli with a little olive oil and soy sauce, it's a good trick to making it more eatable.

Hope I've helped.
Can you clarify why, in your opinion, "WHITE IS BAD?"

Thing is, I'm very lean to begin with and potatoes have helped me gain bulk by lots. Any body fat I have is usually negligible.

Are you mesomorphic? If so, then I see what you mean. But if you're thin like me, then I'd like you to tell me what's wrong with "whites" as you say.

You could be right... just give me more reasoning...

he just means that REFINED carbohydrates are bad. That means white bread, white rice, noodles/pasta made of white wheat or rice. Good alternatives are whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, and brown/wild rice.

Wez, so I take it that you're ectomorphic? Do you have the bodyfat of a balsa-wood termite? :D Do you resemble a gazelle or cheetah, rather than a muscular jaguar? Then you probably don't have to worry about simple (processed) carbs. Your main concern would be caloric intake.

HIIT

High Intesity Interval Training..

Basically its very very high intensity cardio for shorter periods in intervals instead of medium cardio for long period..

Example

Jog 1 min
Sprint for 30 secs
Repeat for a total of 15 min..

Its a killer.. even though it does not sound like it.. 20 min is all you need.. eats fat.. for hours after your done.. spares your muscle ..

hey templeton, when you talk about transporting the waste out of your system by doing some light cardio after a workout. could you be a little more specific. I'd prefer to do some quick treadmill vs the other cardio sh*t but I don't want to overdo it. soooo
1. how long?
2. how far?
3. how fast?
4. after every workout?
5. what about after lifting legs?

thanks man

OK well perhaps what I spoke of before is a little misleading as I am referring to active recovery using cardio type exercise rather than strictly cardio itself.

What I mean by active recovery is, as I said, gentle cardio type activity - e.g. a brisk(ish) walk for 10-15 minutes, similar intensity on the bike or other. I like to use the concept ll rower and I will row at about 20-22 strokes per miniute for 5-10 minutes at the end of a workout. Would especially perform this kind of active recovery after legs. The aim is to get the blood to the muscles in order to flush waste products - specifically, lactic acid after heavy resistance training.

So in essence it would only become effective as cardio if performed for longer periods than is required for active recovery. And yes, I agree too much cardio will deplete muscle mass but this kind of thing or longer (bear in mind the relatively low intensity) will not hurt.
