I was thinking about all the Star Wars movies today, and something occurred to me:

Why in the world is Luke's last name "Skywalker"?

If you were trying to hide the child of the biggest badass in the galaxy (Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader), wouldn't you at least give him a different last name? Especially if you know the kid probably has some latent force abilities and will be making a name for himself soon.

He was safe on a faraway planet of tattooine under the protection and watchful eye of Obi Wan Kenobi.

They say in the Phantom Menace that the federation didn't have any rule on tattooine, so i'm assuming the Empire didn't either.

The stomtroopers did annihilate his Aunt and Uncle. Luke was out doing something.

Hahah I agree. And another bigger question is what genius decides to realise the third part of a six part series last?

whenever someone asked a question you don't know the answer to. A wizard did it!

Tell her a little about yourself, but not too much. Maintain some mystery. Give her something to think about and wonder about when she's at home.

Vader is Anakin. He knew he had kids.

Re:

Precisely...but it's Anakin's wife who runs away, hides, and dies, so the children remain hidden.

Furthermore...when they re-emerge, Vader knows it. Remember the shocking scene...

"Luke I am your father."

How can one forget.

Actually, it's pretty intriguing that he did it backwards like this. Though it wasn't his intention, the special effects (according to reports I've heard), weren't sufficient to do the first 3 as he wanted, so he did the last 3.

Moreover, I'd heard reports its actually a 9 part series, and not 6. I mean, who'd have imagined that there was 3 more when the other episodes where done? When I was a young kid, watching them everyday, I never knew, and was perfectly happy with the last 3.

Especially since CGI fvcked up it all and it go so digital its more like a video game with robotic characters.

It's a movie, who really cares?

If you want my take on it though, in a galaxy with zillions of living things (if Earth has 6 billion, then its safe to assume that an entire movie galaxy would have more than that...) I'm sure you'd run into some people with the last same names who aren't related. If my last name was "Socksmeller", it doesn't mean that every Socksmeller out there young enough to be my son is my son. Plus, from what I saw in the movies its not like they had a Galaxy-wide phone book that Darth Vader could flip through to see if there were any children of his running around...

Nice try! I was going to put "pigporker" but knew that you'd see through it, so I put "socksmeller" instead - now you have no idea that I like to pork pigs!

Then how did he know Luke was his son? Nobody told him.
