Is it better to get angry... I notice angry people have more strength and seem to not get hurt as much. The rage propels their energy

or

is it better to stay calm..... Will a calm person always beat an angry person because he can think about his moves???

What is it with all these threads about fighting?

If you want to have questions like this answered rather go find a martial arts forum. I understand that self defense is something all men should be capable of but asking questions like this here seems to be an absolute waste if time.

To answer your question though, and clearly you have watched to many Jackie Chan movies. You are never calm in a fight. No fight is going to be in a controlled environment. Adrenalin kicks into overdrive and you react. You dont think about anything. The reason why people train is so that their reactions are honed.

Never got guys who were into fighting. I love martial arts and I love the UFC in particular, but I cant stand seeing morons trying to square off at the nightclubs or in bars.

that's what my krav instructor told the class

I agree, if anyone really wants to learn about fighting they need to either take up boxing or a combative martial art. Reading about it and doing it are two completely separate things.

I took martial arts classes that had cops and military as my class mates. While a person may *look* calm and relaxed, they are actually just very focused on what they are doing, but inside they are jacked up on adrenaline.

Martial arts is all about technique and you need your wits, so to that end, you're best with a clear head. The more angry people are, the more likely they are to just start swinging wildly with no technique as they lose their heads.

I agree with the last guy. I think Boxing is great. I would even say probably the most useful as far as striking goes. Because it teaches you so much about coordination, timing, footwork and balance. Pair that up with some Muay Thai and a bit of BJJ or wrestling and that's about all you need. But if I had to choose just one combat sport for use on the street, it would be boxing.

So that leads me to this question. Say you are in a fight and you are going to use your boxing... Woud you just use your adrenaline and start throwing a lot of fast combinations hoping to land something. Or would you be calm and try to time a perfect shot?

you just need more experience. Once you have more experience in whatever it is, fighting, driving, etc. You will learn to act/react better under the adrenaline. It usually slows things down for me a little, sometimes alot this way it may seem like i react faster but for me it seems like everythings moving slow motion.

You can't stay 'calm', your body will be flooded with adrenaline. You can stay focused on your goal of beating the other guy down though. After enough training you won't get the brain fog of not knowing what's going on (or at least it's not as bad / it gets under control).

Stop talking about this kind of stuff and start doing it! If you don't practice, if you don't actually feel it, you'll never know how to handle yourself.

I was always bothered the most before a fight would start, but once I was actually fighting I was ok because I was so focused on what I was doing. This is a point most of you seem to be missing -- the choice isn't "viking rage" or "laid back calm" -- you can be jacked up on a adrenaline AND be rational & focused, but only if you train for it ahead of time. The more you train the less brain fog you'll have and the better fighter you'll be. But you need to train!

staying calm and getting angry. The whole staying calm thing needs to be readdressed.

By staying calm they don't mean, 'oh, let's relax... 1, 2, 3 happy place'. By staying calm you don't go into a blinded rage. You're still doped up on adrenaline going 500 miles/second and you're angry as f*ck, only you're so focused (by staying calm and controlling the rage) you're better able to react while enjoying the benefits of an adrenaline rush. (faster movements, reaction speeds, etc.)

On a side note there are 2 major types of fighters. Dou and Sei type fighters. Dou are the ones that are more external and Sei are the more internal. If you get my drift. It just boils down to who has had more training and experience.

Usually its who weighs more. I had a "super blackbelt martial arts ninja guy" kick me directly in the stomach in a fight before, he probably cracked one of my ribs honestly. I ended up just picking his entire body up and throwing him into a concrete wall. End of fight.

To the OP, one thing you should know about fights-- they happen FAST. I was in a streetfight that lasted over 60 seconds before, it was the craziest thing I have ever done. Most real fights last 20 seconds or less.

You should go get in a fight so that you have the experience.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the power of muscle memory.

A well trained fighter's body will act regardless of how they are feeling (rage, calm, whatever.)

This is because they have attained muscle memory by doing thousands and thousands of repetitions in their training.

This is a real phenomenon where action and precision come whithout thought.

Both being angry and being calm lose as many fights as they win. When you're angry, you don't use as much defense. When you're calm, you don't fight as hard as you should. The best mindset is to be ready. You can judge how much force is actually necessary, know when to defend against taking too many hits, and know when to let the gloves come off.

I have a lot to learn about fighting, but I am pretty good at taking punches.

Similar to the way in which drunk people tend to survive car crashes without getting badly hurt, being relaxed prevents injury. Losing control in a fit of rage tenses your body - that makes you more prone to injury and it makes the other guy's punches do a lot more damage. Martial arts teach that a fighter should absorb his opponent's force, moving with it and not against it. Bruce Lee founded Jeet Kune Do on the principle that there was no one best way of fighting - the best way depends upon what the other guy is doing. A guy in a fit of rage is not doing any of that, which makes it easy to walk into a punch and get knocked out.
