This reminds me of my uncle (by marriage, not genetics) who always thought he was full Italian... Then he recently did an ancestry test and found out he's part North African. The border between the empire of Charlemagne and that of the visigoths ran through here. After that the Moors arrived from Spain, controlling an area that extended north of Toulouse. Places like Castelmaur (Castle-Moor) and Castelsarrazin (Castle-Saracen) still bear witness to their presence. When they were driven back south the area came under the control of the Counts of Barcelona, who later got themselves promoted to Kings of Aragon.
the moors ( Arabs ) were not as present as they were in Spain for a super long period , but they still were in south of France
prior to that , the Carthaginians ( the ancestors of the moors) were there till the romans conquered France from them
then you had the conquest of Algeria, and the French protectorate of morroco and Tunisia , which was for like 100 years…which brought a lot of Arabs in France , then from the 60s when they retired , they had immigrants coming from there
Which for some reason bothered him a lot. But I'm pretty sure some of his ancestors were from Sicily so it makes sense.
