fyi, that youtube version of the corporation is a 'freeware' version. its not the full thing.

if you have a chance rent the full movie - its REALLY good.

the clips on youtube are ok, but not as good as the full movie (lots of stuff is missing online).

The next question is, "What is their message that they are trying to convey, and WHY???? Answer these questions and you will be closer to the truth!!!
They are simply appealing to the needs and desires of the market. It's very simple, actually, but you can easily complicate it by trying to make it into an EXCUSE.

Your intentions may be that, but what is the intention of the owners of mass media? Don't take it personal. Here is another question, "Why has there been a consolidation of the mass media in the last 40 years?" It's about control - control of our minds by a select few!! http://www.mediachannel.org/news/indepth/fcc/

You mean that just because someone sells something to "dumb us down" is no excuse to actually be "dumbed down"?

I've been thinking about getting basic cable installed at my home but right now I'm tormented by the idea. Part of me wants to watch some History Channel / edutainment stuff, as well as the only two 'normal' shows I watch. But at the same time I've been without TV for a year and I'd almost feel like I was 'caving in' if I got it now... lol

That statement pretty much proves that you are completely off your rocker. I feel bad for the person who doesn't see it.

You sound like a Batman movie, where there is an evil villain with nearly unlimited power who must be defeated before he destroys the world. The world is made up of rich people and poor people, The rich get richer by catering to the needs and desires of EVERYONE. And how do they promote their products? The media.

Again, who is the one wrapped up in the matrix?

well money is control.

theres only two forms of control in this world: money and the army.

yes, you can brainwash people, but without money you can't. so money is behind all the 'tactics' used to control peopel psychologically, as well as physically (in terms of wages).

the army/police is the other form of control.

want to control a society? first create an economy and get everyone to give you (ie. the government) a portion of whatever they make so that you're the richest cat on the block. second, create the media so that you can get them to think the way you want (or at least never get to pissed at you) and thirdly, use the money you collect to build an army / police force to keep them in line.

hehe.

no its about profit margins. every industry has consolidated in the past 50 years.

everytime two companies consolidate it lets them cut about 10-30% of their workforce and increase the margins (ie. market price) of their product (because there is less competition in the market). this is why the government 'regulates' mergers and acquisitions and if a company gets too big will actually bust it up into smaller companies.

its always always always about money.

companies keep consolidating because they can produce the same amount of output with less people and charge more for that output.

actually, i dont think tv will hurt you if its not your sole source of information.

the reason it hurts most of society is that most of society is stupid. i watch tv and it doens't mess me up. but thats because I also have two degrees, i've read TONS of philosophy, psychology, history books etc.

its ok to eat macdonalds once a month if you are eating healthy the rest of the time.

its ok to watch tv provided you have other sources for feeding your brain.

the problem today is that there are so many people who don't read, so all they are getting is hours and hours of bullsh*t from tv.

JoeKerr, money is an artificial construct, ultimately it is a perceived value - part of "The Matrix" - it has no real value, money is a vehicle to the end - and the "end" is about control!! The dollar is being trashed!!! Why? Tomorrow it will be another currency they use for control!! In today's world, can you buy or sell without this standard??

but you can both be right. no one really has an agenda. the ONLY agenda is to make money.
Which is EXACTLY what I am saying. I did not deny that the media has INFLUENCE on people. LMS sounds like an anti social, delusional quack espousing the idea that there is some kind of dictator pulling the strings of the world.

there have been many powerful and influential people in history but NONE have had enough power to pull off what LMS would like you to believe.

if there is an agenda at the top its for a few people to milk as much money out of the pockets of the many.
See, that's the matrix talking right there.

It's REAL easy to point the finger at the rich and powerful without accounting for the fact that EVERYONE is out there trying to do the same thing.

The poor, the blue collar, the less than famous, all fly under the radar, but make no mistake; everyone is out to get their own.

What do you think is more of a waste or strain on a business? The CEO who is making millions every year, or the employees who are stealing office supplies, taking advantage of expense accounts, or riding the clock (among other things)?

thats why we are brainwashed to buy crap. a couple of guys are laughing their asses off that they became billionares getting kids to buy cabbage patch dolls or britney spears cds.
And why shouldn't they celebrate? They spotted a DEMAND and they filled it. If they were putting a gun to people's heads you would have a valid point, but I don't see a lot of armed thugs with AK47's at Virgin bullying people to buy Britney's latest cd. This entire argument can be destroyed by simply acknowledging the fact that people are making choices based upon their own free will. It is not an advertisers responsibility to ensure that the public is "making the right decision".

but i don't believe there are old men sitting aroudn the table hatching plans to destroy the world by brainwashing the public into being idiots.
Which is the basis for LMS's entire argument. This in itself is enough to discredit pretty much everything he says, INCLUDING his "agenda" theory.

str8up, but dude, you gotta also admit that these guys at the top do some pretty nefarious sh*t.

i mean, you got companies selling toys with lead in them, using insecticides that created birth defects, dumping toxic chemicals in rivers so they don't have to pay for safe disposal, etc.

i dont think LMS is nuts for thinking the way he does because a lot of the guys at the top of these company's are psychopaths that would dump toxic on you if they could get away with it and it increased profits.

my stance is inbetween you two. i think its all about money (supply and demand of the market), but precisely because of money you get huge amounts of corruption at the top level.

and to cover that corruption up (or as LMS puts it, to maintain control) the guys at the top do some pretty f*cked up stuff.

lms, i agree. but money symbolizes control.

btw, i'll tell you exactly what could happen to the usa. the guys at the top of the pyramid are going to milk every penny they can from the country (while it goes bankrupt and the dollar becoems worth sh*t) and then the elite will simply leave when the usa becomes a second world country.

they'll go buy a villa in europe and set up shop there and start all over again.

im canadian, but i really hope you guys elect Ron Paul. because i dont think the usa is nearing the point of no return. it will be to late if it wakes up to reality in 20 years from now.

Capitalism serves money above all else, so why should anyone be surprised that it has undesirable side-effects to life?

It is truly naive to assume a system that is driven by money will automatically serve humanity optimally. And therefore, by its very nature it gives those who have the most money the means to have the most control. In a purely capitalist system, money truly is control.

But the system is still dependent upon the complicity of enough people. There is still a majority of people in the US who buy into the dogma that public control of large entities is inherently bad. But it only makes sense to me that entities that entities should be answerable to the public to the degree they can affect the public.

Not that I'm anti-capitalist. I'm a business owner, after all, but I do not pay people such ridiculously low wages as our laws allow when they work for me.

I think free enterprise is all well and fine to the extent is does not affect the general public negatively (e.g. excessive pollution, stealing labor {wages below a "living wage"}, out-and-out scams, etc.). I also think it's socially imperative that there is a public means to meet the basic needs of people who are willing to make a fair contribution to society. Canada, as a nation, understands this much better than the US at present.

Communism has it all wrong: it concentrates too much on keeping down the upper classes (except, in practice, for the communist party itself ... lol), whereas the real function of the public sector should be on "raising the floor," so to speak, and ensuring that other public needs are met and secured... which is a truly proper "mixed economy," from which the US has recently moved farther and farther away...

str8up, that not what i said.

i said consolidation is simply about reducing workforce costs and increasing the profit margins on the products being sold by having less competition in the market.

it has nothing to do with them being out to get the consumer.

but when consolidation goes to far you do end up with monopolies.

most major industries in the US basically have 3-4 big vendors that own the industry. this is the result of consolidation.

its just like the political system. no third party can afford to compete against the dems or reps. once industries consolidate, no one can really challenge the 3-4 companies that control the market.

and why does it always end up being 3-4 companies? because the government won't allow there to be only 1-2, thats considered a monopoly and duopoly and is illegal. so 3-4 seems to be where the government say 'ok, we can say there is competition, so thats fine."

whats really scary is how these companies at the top are buying up other industries. and so you have huge companies owning all kinds of other companies, but you don't know they do.

the world of competition isn't as competitive as you would think when it comes to really big business.

oh and btw, in terms of the influence these companies wield. lets just say you'll never get invited to a presidential dinner, but the CEO of GE, Ford, etc. get invited every three months.

there is a good old boys club of the rich and powerful, dont fool yourself about that.

the question is to what extent they are actually conspiring to 'rule' the world if you will.

You and everyone else have an issue with trying to attach all of the blame to the most visible target.

You assume that this one person at the top is the devil and everyone underneath are angels. It doesn't work that way. The big target will always be the source of scrutiny and will get the most airtime on the news (as determined by the desire of the public for the exact thing that you are promoting!), but fact of the matter is EVERYONE is guilty.

i dont think LMS is nuts for thinking the way he does because a lot of the guys at the top of these company's are psychopaths that would dump toxic on you if they could get away with it and it increased profits.

This is an entirely different argument.

We were talking about media's influence, now we are talking about high level execs dumping toxins on you.

Str8up, everyone here disagrees with your basis - which doesn't necessarily make it wrong, but in this topic/forum of mass delusion, the majority see reality for what it is!!
