What would happen if they actually did leave the union in the near future? I'm guessing they would merge w/ Mexico? Or become an independent country?

First I really doubt any US state will leave any time soon, but, if Texas did, there is absolutely no way in hell they will ever even consider joining Mexico.

I'm pretty sure the last Civil War set the precedent of what happens when a state tries to leave the Union.

That's been tried once by several U.S. states. Lets just say it didn't go so well for them. Not going to happen. Couldn't happen.

The question is flawed. The provision upon Texas's annex into the US was a formed agreement from one country to another, as Texas was techincally it's own country and not a territory bought or taken by the he US. It states in the agreement that if Texas wanted to secede from the US it could do so on it's own voting basis without the executive branch interviening. However if it were to secede it would become it's own country with five predetermined parts outlined in the agreement.

It would get taken over by drug kingpins in a heartbeat. Since our military basically keeps them safe, they would be defenseless. On top of that, I think half of Texas's population would move to US overnight.

Both of your sentences are factually wrong. There was no such clause and Texas reserves the right to split into five states by its choosing own regardless of any non-existent secession.

eh Texas, if they secede here's what will happen:

1) US invades
2) takes over
3) everything's back in order

I guess it would be an excuse to kill some dip**** creationists during the takeover, but otherwise, I couldn't give 2 ****s about Texas.

lol. I'D LAUGH MY ASS OFF, IF THAT HAPPENED.

US has a long history of supporting the breakup of many different countries, including Russia and Former Yugoslavia (especially Kosovo).

I hate all politicians. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Why would Texas secede? If any state would secede from the Union, it would be Alaska. There is a political party that exists that calls for secession. However, the chances of it ever happening are very slim at best.

Any state that seceded from the Union would be foolish. Their economic, political, and social structures would be hit so hard that the state would crumble and crawl back to the United States. That's why the Confederacy never really had a chance of existing without support from England or France and fought so hard for it.

...can I get at least PARTIAL credit for knowing about the ability to split? What a drag...Thank god I don't have to back to real school anymore.

This is just like Quebec and the rest of Canada.

Don't worry, it will never happen. They can't survive on their own anyway.

If Texas or any one state becomes an independent country, I think several others will too. There is a lot of talk of it right now, but how many people are on board with actually doing what it takes to break away from the handouts that the federal government gives at this point? It would also mean the possibility of an all out war with the remaining states.

If things continue to go as they are (government getting bigger and more oppressive) it will happen sooner or later. When it does, all hell will break loose and we'll have another massive civil war in America, but people are going to be fighting each other within their own states, not just big divided regions like last time.

In the so-called "Civil War," the North was actually in the wrong. The southern states peacefully seceded, and the North initiated war.

When this country was created, under the constitution, states were free to secede. There was nothing saying that once you're in, you can never get out.

Otherwise those states would never have joined the United States in the first place. They were reluctant to begin with.

Also, contrary to what is taught in most schools, the Civil War was not about slavery. Never was. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation as a war measure. Lincoln himself didn't care whether we had slaves or not.

------

In modern times, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a second revolution, once the U.S. dollar is only good for lighting fires and people begin to get angry....
