The south was no longer part of the Union, therefore it had no right to Fort Sumter as it was the property of the United States of America, not the Confederate States of America. For example, for American soldiers in the south to join the Confederate army they had to surrender to the Confederacy and then enlist in the Confederate army.

And read Alexander Stephens's Cornerstone Speech...it is quoted above. Alexander Stephens was the Vice President of the Confederacy and he states himself that slavery was the main reason for secession.

The South adopted the "Lost Cause" mentality after the war which a lot of people still adhere to today. Basically, the South tried to justify their reason for secession to not appear like they were the aggressor. Namely, they changed their reason for secession to economic problems with the North to save face. By doing so, they tried to support a moral image of the South. In the end though, it was all a facade.

Alexander Stephens is a perfect example of the "Lost Cause." After the war he changed his stance on what caused secession. And if you read his cornerstone speech, he said plain and clearly the reason was slavery. After the war he changed the reason to economic sanctions.

It was all a ploy to make the South look good after defeat. It is all a lie.

Alexander Stephens doesn't speak for the Confederacy.

"The south was no longer part of the Union, therefore it had no right to Fort Sumter as it was the property of the United States of America"

That doesn't explain the fact that the North's basic premise was wrong, which was that the Southern states had no right to secede from the US, when in fact they did.
