I read a book this morning with that question in it. The guy was saying that most people want to be rich but never give 10 minutes thought to what it actually means to them to be rich.

Myself Ive spent quite a bit of time chasing money around, and I figure that considering how much of my time and energy it takes divided by the number of good years I have on planet earth that being rich to me is not really about having a million dollars and a fancy car. It could be if it works out that way, but I consider myself quite rich at the moment.

Heres what rich means to me;
1. I live in a great part of a top city in a first world country. (and Ive seen people living on a garbage dump in Cambodia. I KNOW Im rich!)
2. I have access to great health care, a top notch gym and some of the best food on the planet.
3. I have my own small business and have the flexibility built in to be able to work my asz off when I want and earn 5 or 6 hundred a day and then take off for a month, and then come back and pick it up again almost immediatly.
4. Im never going to starve here no matter how bad it gets.
5. I have a house that creates income for me, hopefully for as long as Im alive.

Areas that I would like to be richer;
1. I'd like to create more passive income, so that I'm earning when Im not working.
2. I'd like better relationships with family, quality time spent with friends, energy left over from working to spend on physical activity like getting outdoors, playing music and going on dates.
3. More peace of mind, happiness and for want of a better word 'joy'... more of the kick asz happy times that Ive on occasion had in the past when all the stars allinged and life felt just right!

Thats my first thoughts, not so much about having tons of money, could be if I dont have to sacrifice all my time for it. But more about reminding myself what I do have, and using what I do have well.
I have a couple of good friends who have money, Ive watched them age quite fast though, neither of them go to the gym or could point to where there liver is or where to go for a healty meal. Just doesnt seem worth it to me.

At this moment, just getting myself back up to $0 will be the equivalent of being rich. Anything above that would be a dream come true.

To me, "rich" is not being wanting.

In the financial sense, how "rich" I am is defined by how often I have to say to myself, "I would like to do this, but I lack the money to do so." It honestly doesn't happen often, so I guess I'm fairly "rich" in that regard, but it does occur occasionally.

You could apply the same principles to being rich in health, friends, etc.

Dear fellow,

Living in a first world country does not make you rich, although I know ghetto in America could seem like a paradise to some. Furthermore it is meaningless to have a great health care in a country where you are poisoned via food, air, water, and media. You do not have access to greatest foods on the planet unless you growing it yourself. What does being rich give you if you and your children have greater chance of mental disease, birth defects, obesity and cancer? Finally, there are very few small businesses out there that can remain small for long, most have to get big or get swallowed by the market and competition. Finally, how will you be remembered after your money runs out?

Let me tell you what being rich means to me.

1. Living in a part of the world where I'm the most happiest, for example my birth place, where I grew up.
2. I have my own land with fresh air, and water.
3. I have freedom to enjoy my life, don't have to be fancy, just the ability to do what I want when I want it is enough.
4. I'm well known and respected in all 3 areas, cops, government, and the underworld.
5. I'm a contributing member of society, and will be though good of after I die.

I'm afraid that for me your idea of rich is just plain lazy and scared.

Indeed. When I used to live in AmeriKKKa I had plenty of money and no time. Now it's different, I have enough money and plenty of time. For example I can leave my job anytime to take care of my own business, all the while I earn on average twice more than the average person here. I can walk up to any stranger and strike up a conversation that can go deep and personal, unlike in AmeriKKKa where conversations are shallower than Mekong river during drought. I do have access to greatest foods, it's as near as local market, and everything is freshly grown. Vegetables and grain are not genetically modified, meat is not injected with hormones, water is not poisoned with fluoride. Heck son, my IQ went up ever since I moved out of AmeriKKKa.

I'm happy to report that I already have all of the above.

The best thing of all is that here I'm not a rice, spook, spick, or nigga. I'm in fact a patriot who left the country, got an education, saw the system for what it is, and came back to make his own country better.

I bet you thinking this man is a fool, he will never get rich in Russia. They showed on TV recently a Russian businessman buy 2nd biggest castle in London. While I wouldn't invest into castles in London, I'm afraid of ghosts, with that money I'd probably build me a ski resort in the mountains that could bring income in the winter, and then a water park, that could bring money in the summer, and in the spring and fall I could kick it in a resort in Cambodia!

I'm afraid my dear friend rich are poor in so many ways, and they needlessly sacrifice their lives for useless valuables. Can't take it with you to the other side son. The only thing you can do is ensure you have a good life and your children have a good life. What's the point to AmeriKKKa if your children are poisoned and their minds corrupted? What's the point to AmeriKKKa if your country is some 3rd world ghetto splams dump? I'm sorry but I can not live in America the way it is right now.

It's not all bad over here, I live in Canada next to the beach and the mountains. The valley here grows some of the best food there is and the water comes from the mountains. Also Ive had my business for about 8 years and I'm doing fine.
It's not all a ghetto over here bro!

i could care less how much money i have in the bank, money imho is nothing more than a means to an ends to accomplish goals and to live as comfortably as realitlivy possible. I don't get a hard on counting my bank statements, nor do i think it makes me better than anyone else.

the term "rich" i have come to learn, is very impractical. so what lol? money in the bank, that is not directed towards anything, is pointless. who is better off, the guy that has 10 million in the bank but spends his life in strip clubs and snorting blow or the guy who makes 200k a year but has very sound foundation, little to no debt and his net worth is growing on a yearly if not monthly basis.

i stopped counting money a long time ago. there are certain things i want to have, simply becuase, i want them. I want a loft in Lexington, ky. i would be shocked if i did not have that this coming year actually. I would like a house on pacific coast highway. I want to make sure my son's education is taken care of which I have for the most part done. by the time he's 5-6 he should be good to go.. I want to grow my mini conglomerate. I feel, I was put here on earth, to do one thing, and that thing, is to bring the sport of horse racing up to new technological standards. from websites design, to fan interaction with other fans, to applications, to to some ideas that i've trademarked that i wouldn't dare share with anyone. the game is way too behind as far as technology goes, and I am the person who is going to bring it up to standards,.

in the end, that's all i want to do. i could care less if it paid me 30k or 3 billion dollars. but i need money, to make all that happen. so money is a means to an end.

I spend my life doing pretty much whatever the hell I feel like at any given moment. That is my only concept of wealth.

If I was really wealthy I would not live in or near a city.

Cities provide great economic benefits and so using a city for a business and work is good, however I have lived in the central business district of one of the biggest cities in North America and it was the worst year of my life. ;)

Ultimately I want to live in the country on a LARGE piece of land, and have a small apartment in/around the city for work. Ideally I'd like to be on the edge of a national park, around 1000 acres. Nearby lake or large river. Orchards, gardens, fields, and the majority being wilderness. Would have a local neighbor use some of the fields for hay or occasional livestock grazing, in trade for fresh produce from his farm. A solar array on the roof would provide all the power I needed, and a government-sponsored wind turbine would take care of the rest as well as pay off the bills.

Plenty of room for small-game hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and whatever else I choose to do with a 1000 acres of my own land.

Run the business most of the week from home on the farm, and be in the city for two to four days a week managing my operation directly.

Leasing/renting the apartment in the city would save having to drive back and forth, as drives from the central business district out into farm country are usually fairly long. Also apartments are low maintenance. ;)

I have lived in the country, I have lived in suburbia, and I have lived in the heart of a city. I know which is good for what, and where I like to live.

Suburbs are sort of useless for me. I find them boring compared to a city and not relaxing compared to the country.

How good is the blow?

You don't measure rich in money in the bank, or possessions.

You measure rich in freedom. How free are you?!? Honestly ask yourself that question. THAT is how rich you are.

Money and I are good friends.

Money wont flake on me, play head games with me, use me, nag me,...

Now, I know some of you are thinking that this is sad or materialistic, but my point is, money is one of the few things in my life that I can control.

I work, I get paid, I pay my taxes, I pay my bills, and then I spend to reward myself for a job well done(travel, hobbies, etc.).

Compared to women, at least for me, money is easy.

Everybody does have a different idea of rich.

But the bottom line is the only way to be completely free is to have a lot of money.

You can get as spiritual or philosophical as you want on the subject but until you can afford to live anywhere at any time, do anything at anytime, or buy anything at anytime you aren't really rich.

Now, I'd put my health and youth before money any day of the week. But, this doesn't change the fact the money = freedom and freedom is a fundamental human desire.

What do I consider rich? When the rules and constructs of society no longer apply to me. Not because I'm some looney who just doesn't care, but because I have so much money the rules simply don't apply.

To be rich, simply, is to be someone who realizes his potential, and makes best use of the rights we are promised as Americans.

I feel that money is the direct measure of a man's contribution to the world that we live in. The more money he has, the greater his contribution and higher the value of his life. His reward is a life free from the triflesome worries of someone who does not have money, and the ability to use it however he sees fit.

So that's the great secret of getting rich: always look for an opportunity to contribute more, not just take what you can get.

To be rich is the furthest fulfillment of a man's life. It is the arbiter of all disputes, the yardstick by which men are measured. It is the most direct evidence of a man's true worth, because it lays clearly evident his strength, work ethic, ambition, persistence, confidence, and the stuff that he is made of. It bears credible testimony to his character. Wealth shows that a man was strong enough to conform himself to the laws of our existence, and great enough to conquer them.

Everyone else has mere talk; the man of wealth has undisputable evidence.

Building wealth gives us men a single, catalyzing goal at which we obsessively aim; it is the North Star of our existence.

Becoming rich for me is simply building the balance sheet of my life with a huge asset column and a tiny liability column. These assets and liabilities include money, friendships, love, quality of life, breadth of experience, etc.

From a less philosophical perspective, it is about eliminating debt and making wise investments while saving cash as well. Another habit that rich men make before they get rich, is that of saving money. I have to be responsible in allocating capital so that, in time, I can borrow more to build my wealth even further.

My debt is nearly gone, and I am gaining steam in my investments. I attack my balance sheet from all sides, and it is looking better and better. Eventually, I will be able to borrow enough money to become an industrialist; I like manufacturing and utilities. I don't know what I'm going to make yet, but the steps I am taking now will enable me to make it happen when I do.

Stay thirsty my friends.

You know what I saw an episode of dexter where he bought a van just to kill somone.I said damn I would like that to have enough income to following my hobby of killing someone. That's money I guess being rich would mean to do that. To actually have a savings account with at leas 4,000 and to own my own home. To be able to buy things with cash for my family that's all.

We've already had this discussion and you ran away like a little girl when we were discussing criminals, politicians and other useless members of society who have money but contribute nothing.

I agree with the rest of your post, but you have some seriously despotic beliefs sometimes.
