One more thing though... If she DOES get pregnant, after how long will we be able to tell if she is pregnant or not? And is there anything that she can take AFTER having sex to make SURE that IF she DID get pregnant she will be able to "kill it" BEFORE it too late? (Like 1 or 2 days after having sex)
yes, it's called the morning after pill. it's basically a huge ass dose of 'the pill', and you're supposed to take it within the next 72 (or 48, im not sure) hours of having sex. In norway, you can get it over the counter, dont know about SA though. And yeah, some chicks might get some bi-effects of that pill, like feeling ill or vomitting. if you want more info, google it or just ask your local sex-ed place.

Kewlies...

Kewl kewl.... shot for all the advice... I think that if i am in the position that i want to have unprotected sex (no condom) then I'll deffinatelly make sure that my girl is on the pill, and then i'll make sure that i have the "morning after pill" in handy for her to take just incase;)

Thanx again to all that gave information...

Squirrels - You are correct in saying what the pill DOES (prevent ovulation entirely), however, what I tried to show was HOW it does this.

It isnt magic, it does not stop the womans body from producing eggs, it creates a chemical imbalance in the body, through acidic synthetic hormones, to prevent the release of eggs.

This is the point I was trying to make in my previous post. I didnt mean to mislead by being overly simplistic about the role of increased acid the pill creates.

The New England Journal Medicine has a few great pieces of literature to explain how the hormones, estrogen and progestogen, the two hormones found in the pill, and how it creates a higher acidic imbalance in the woman's body.

The American Medical Association Study of Pregnancy states,

" ...birth control pills work primarily by signaling the pituitary (the "master gland" of the body) to stop causing the ovaries to release eggs"

note: not stop producing, but RELEASING eggs.

"the pill also makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus by producing an acidic mucus plug at the opening of the uterus."

"a man's fertility may be affected because the sperm are especially sensitive to the acidity of the woman's vagina or cervical canal which can further aid in the prevention of pregnancy."
- - - AMA, guide to Pregnancy; 1987

This "increased levels of acidic hormones" is the role of the pill.

You are wise in knowing the main goal of the pill, but by understanding HOW it achieves this goal you can see how it is quiet easy to inadvertantly or accidentally disrupt the chemical imbalance thru basic outside synthetics.

Back in the day when the pill was designed Walmart did not have 6000 over-the-counter meds to choose from. Birth control pills are still a good prevention of pregnancy as long as the users are aware of the influence of outside meds.

I am not a doctor, but for over 10 years I have battled these acidic hormones. My body creates these higher levels naturally, making it impossible for me to get pregnant without taking acid reducing or a form of fertility drugs.

The chemicals in the drugs I have taken are similar to the chemicals found in other "reducing' drugs, just in stronger concentrates.

The science isnt perfect, it allows me to get pregnant, but it cannot hold back this acid production long enough for me to carry a child full term, resulting in misscarriages.

There are woman that have the opposite issue, their body produces very little of the hormones and the pill may not be strong enough to prevent the release of the egg or depleat the sperm count. Thus, resulting in pregnancy, with no human error or outside meds.

Again, it is still a good form of birth control, but a womans chemistry and/or outside influences, can lessen it's ability for total prevention.

My gf refuses to go on the pill because apparently it makes people moody, which is not something she needs.

Until I can convince her otherwise, it's condoms for us.

Does it really? Can you maybe back this statement up? arg! all these problems with sex...

Whats that thing when something is cut in the woman so that she cant have kids/become pregnant? And apparently the guy can also have something cut so that he wont be able to ejaculate sperm... how does THAT work? And is it expensive?

Pretty much. If you're under 18 or 21 (depends on the state), the girl can get them free from her local Health Unit. They aren't availiable over the counter yet in the USA - either her doctor has to prescribe it to her, or she's got to get it from the HU. From the ones I'm familiar with, there are 2 pills to be taken 12 hours after each other; the sooner after the incident (condom breaking, etc) the better chance they have of being effective.

It's called a vasectomy. From your age, you've got a good while to wait before any doctor will perform that surgery on you... Google it for more information.

I can't, but I'm not the one making the claim; her doctor is.

so instead of simply going to the nearest pharmacy and getting that pill, the girl(along with me, cause i'm gonna make sure she takes it) has to make an appointment with her doctor(IF he has spots available), wait hell knows how long to actually see him, then go to the pharmacy, and since its not OTC pay 3x as much.

is this the FDA fvckin with us or the drug company itself?

Does anyone know if spermicidal condoms are effective as well?

As for male contraceptive in a few years we will see on the drugstore shelves male birth control pills.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/96391_malepill20.shtml

You know what that means? There will be topics in this forum about guys asking dumb questions like " Does this makes me less of a man in the eyes of my girl if I am shooting blanks inside of her??"

You need to calm down. You won't get a girl pregnant if she takes the Depo-Provera shot or the pill (correctly). You don't need to use condoms with them.

You are too yound for a vasectomy.

You can get the morning after pill, but I'm pretty sure you can't just get it to save for later. Also, it's not just something you take after everytime you have sex. It's only for emergencies.

WTF? You're so full of sh1t it's not even funny. Don't invent references that don't exist.

Man's fertility may be affected?
Acidic synthetic hormones! LOL That's a good one.

Good for you kiddo, at least you can spell pituitary right. :)

I think the number is 1800-NOT-2-LATE and u can find out where the nearest pharamacy is to get the morning after pill. It is correct that if you go to a state-funded clinic u have to see a doctor first (at least in california). If u go to a private pharmacy then u don't need a doctor. Obviously it takes precious time to get an appointment with a doctor so you are best off just paying the damn $35 for the pills... it sure beats the cost of abortion and surely beats the cost of a child for 18 years.

Or you could just do a walk-in at the local health unit and they'll give it to her free (the one I've been to took less than 45 minutes, and she had never been there before). If you go that route, have her bring ID - driver's license, birth cert, ID card... or else you'll end up paying $80. Oh, and don't have her take it unless she actually needs it - it makes the chick pretty messed up physically for a day or two.

im sorry i didnt realise that this was even posted.

yes i did get pregnant 4 times on birth control and each time i was devasted because i felt like i was doing what i could to prevent it.

perhaps i fall in the one percent or five percent that it doesnt work for , who knows?

i can tell you that i was very young the first time, only 15, and i had gotten sick and had to take an antibotic at that time. i think that is what counter acted with the birth control and i ended up pregnant. there was also a use of condoms at that time, however since i was very young and so was the guy, instead of using spit or ky jelly , he put vasoline on the condom. guess what it did? thats right, it ate holes all over it.

the other kids didnt have any of the other stuff to counter act. i just got pregnant with them while on the pill.

at times, i would switch off of the pill and use the depro provera shot. this worked great for birth control by thining the lining of my uterus however it make me bleed every day for nine months and lose weight like crazy. i tried it years later and again for nine months my bleeding was daily and i lost more weight. so i could no longer try this method.

so everytime i relied on the pill before and after marriage , it did not do what it was suppose to do .

birth control can cause moodiness in females. it adds to the hormones we already have.

however, all local health departments will give free condoms out and free birth control and sermicides such as ky jelly.
everything is confidential and they will not call parents.
they can std test and give pap smears to girls. they call this family planning. it is all freeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

just because i fall into some weird catergery where nothing seems to work for me , doesnt mean all chicks fall in that.
however , do not rely on it .

i recently got my tubes tied last april. they made me sign a paper saying i understood it was only 97% accurate and that i could not sue them if i ended up pregnant again.
i hope i am not in the one percent again for that.

for the guy who asked how long it takes to realise you are pregnant:
with my oldest i was probally about two weeks when i knew.
with the second and third kids , i knew the next morning and have actual video tapes of the ultra sounds at two weeks.
with my last baby , it was like i went to bed one nite and woke up the next day 10 weeks along. i should have missed two periods with that child, however i did not miss any periods or feel pregnant at all until i was 10 weeks along.

i have honestly met women who say they continued to have periods for up to 6 mo and didnt know they were pregnant. i used to think they were lying but now i really wonder ......

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

by the way,
i understand that their is a birth control pill that is currently being displayed on tv. like a call back deal.
apparently they mispackaged some and it is all the placebo pill that does nothing and should only be used during the menstral cycle.
however i can not find out what brand it is .
but i didnt try to google it either.

i always had trouble with the free kind from the health department called ortho novem 777. they came in a round white case.

Couple more things:

The morning after pill number is 188-NOT-2-LATE (not 1800, like previously stated).

There's also another form of birth control called Norplant. It is an implant that goes in the woman's arm, and I think it costs around $900, though that figure could be wrong. It protects her from pregnancy for 3 years, I believe and has at least 99.99% effectiveness.

So you may want to look into that as well, if she knows that she doesn't want to have kids in the next 3 years, which I'm sure is the case.
