Alright, I noticed people asking for a fashion/style thread. I dont see anyone starting it so I will.

Gentlemen, ask away.

But first,
A little introduction

I would like to start by making the following statement:

There is a difference between being "stylish" and being a "trend *****". David Beckham, although quite well known for his dress sense, is not someone you should aspire to be. You may follow certain trends, but be subtle, dont go all out. Trends come and go.

There is nothing wrong and nothing feminine about being "stylish".

Consider some of these classically elegant gentlemen: Cary Grant, Roger Moore, Sean Connery, George Clooney, Pierce Brosnan, Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and most importantly JFK.

Do you think these men do not care at all about their appearance? Sure, they are movie stars, but it is no excuse. In the past, celebrities, even in casual settings, are still well dressed. Sadly, in the present day, you dont see much of this anymore.

Look, as long as you are not wearing overtly outlandish clothes, do not be afraid of being called metrosexual or gay. Metrosexual/Gay is an extreme predicament. Being not at all concerned about what you wear is the other extreme. Please do not be in any of these extremes. Just be presentable.

Now, I dont mean you should walk around in suits all the time (although, i do quite like the idea. i love suits) But, dress for the occassion. Dont wear track pants and sweatshirts out to dinner with your girl. Wear a nice dress shirt or a nice polo. Pair it up with a good pair of jeans. Preferably a dark pair. Wearing sneakers with the outfits above are quite acceptable, just as long as they are not the shoes you wear to the gym.

Alot of you are in college. Good. So am I. But it is no excuse to be a slob.

Its not that hard really. If you are not that much into fashion, just buy a few good fitting solid colored t-shirts. Invest in a couple of good fitting pair of jeans and you are set to go. Throw in a couple of polo shirts and you are gold. Its easy!

Notice that I mention "fit" alot. Fit is the most important aspect of style. You may have the most expensive shirt, but its nothing if it does not fit you well. Make sure your clothes fit good. Not too loose and not too tight. Ask the sales assistants when you are in doubt. I mean, dont be afraid of fitted stuff. You guys spend alot of time in the gym, why not show it off? Just make sure it aint too tight.

I guess this is it for now. I have quite a bit to say, but i reckon this will be a good place to start.

I welcome contributions/suggestions and criticisms as much as i welcome your questions.

Till next time, gentlemen.

Great link kev!

However, I disagree about the tucking shirt in thing. Sometimes, I tuck my shirt in, sometimes I dont. You dont always have to not tuck in your shirt. (Yes, even if you are not wearing a sweater over it or a tie)

I personally prefer tucking them in when I want to step up on class a notch. I do it especially when I wear blazers. Let's say, I put together a black blazer and a crispy white dress shirt with a pair of dark slim straight cut denim. (You cannot go wrong with this combo) I will tuck my shirt in. But I make sure my jeans are not too high up. They sit comfortably on my hips. I tend to like the slouchy look when I want to look just a tad trendy (not baggy! just pull it down a slight bit)

duckbutt,

The polo shirts I am referring to are your general ralph lauren or lacoste shirts. Short sleeve and with collars. Usually made with cotton? (Those two mentioned above are great brands! If you dont mind spending a little money... And remember, its all about fit! No baggies! - Unless you are a rap star)

syemour,

My pleasure!

As with anything else, generalizations are just that...generalizations. They apply to the average of the average without taking into account the invidual variations among our body types.

Personally, I have facial hair cause I like the way it looks on me. If I shave it off, it will be because I want to, not to strike a more acceptable image for broads. If a chick doesnt' like me cause of my soul patch/goatee, TS babe!

Also, the shirt-tucking....personally, un-tucking doesn't bother me really as long as it's done right, and to me, right is:

-untucked shirts should not have tails or be uneven at the bottom - I think the only shirts that should be untucked are those "Panama" style shirts that are even at the bottom. So many times I see dudes with flared out shirts that look stupid just cause they wanna "untuck" - looks dumb.

-I think the "stigma" against tucking in is lame. If you wanna tuck in, do it for chrissakes! It looks neater and crisper, especially with a pair of thinner, straight-legged pants.

One thing I see too much is baggy-ass pants with an untucked shirt with a long tail that covers the saggy ass  LOL Anyways man, that's just me, but I think it looks sloppy.

I think the only guys who benefit by untucking shirts which would traditionally be tucked in are
FAT GUYS
NO-ASS GUYS
TALL SKINNY GUYS

Banana Republic is a great store for fitted clothes.

Yeah it's not cheap at all, in fact it's fvcking expensive... But if you want nice fitted clothes, that's where it's at.

Their fitted Ts are great, especially if u have a bit of muscle underneath. They're something like 35 bucks a pop, and 3 for 75 bucks. Yeah that's more expensive than some Foot Locker Ts, but you really notice the difference. It's always good to have atleast acouple nice outfits in your wardrobe. I dress pretty casual, but every so often I throw in something sweet, just to mix things up. Hollister, A&F, Lacoste, BR, and Polo are all kick-ass clothing brands, just don't wear that stuff all the time like a lot of prep people do. Use nice clothes sparingly, and people notice it more.

The key to being fashionable and stylish is variety.

All the people that you see regularly and always think "wow, that outfit is cool" dress different each day, so the style that they use never gets old.

I don't advocate being a fashion *****, but knowing what type of clothes to wear, and having a fashion sense, definitely helps.

If we're making a fashion thread, let's get some examples(pictures) up of different styles.

Bannana republic has such gay looking clothes for men. I would not recomend any straight guys buy clothes there.

Its one thing to dress metrosexual, some chicks dig that look. But its another to dress homosexual. Chicks dont like that.

Seriously though, we really need some female experts to come in here and post in this thread.

Women often know better what looks good on a guy than a guy does.

I used to work at Banana, and I sold to maybe 3% homosexuals. The rest were straight dudes, usually boring dressers, and most of the time they were with their girlfriends/wives. Women like to dress men in BR.

Which brings me to my other point. Women really know nothing about dressing men. The girls who worked at my BR were, by all accounts, stylish girls (a couple did fashion design at college), and couldn't manage to fit a suit to a man, put a shirt and tie together, or whatever. When you go shopping, ask the best-dressed male employee to help you.

Also, if you're worried about looking gay, you're not gonna get very far in fashion, because it's about attitude. I wear the gayest sh¡t around and I used to get called out on it at bars, but now I don't even get that because my reality is so consistent with my style.

banana republic is not "fitted" clothing. it is simply low-end mass produced american crap. it is a&f for the straight set. if you live in america you probably have enough cash to shop at saks or neiman-marcus. do it. clothes and girls have a lot in common. (1) quality over quantity. less equals more. (2) don't go american.

american college culture is a pig farm. the american college broad thinks flip-flops are stylish. enough said. plus, she is way too fat to fit into anything that my type of girl would look good in. in american measurements i only deal with girls in the 34-24-34 range...they need to be 5'8" or 5'9" as well. common in ukraine and impossible to find on u.s. shores/western shores. i really doubt if many of you have even seen such a girl.

Everybody has a different style Sparky...

And not everybody can afford to drop $500 on a sweater.

Banana Republic is too expensive for what you get, from what I hear. The cuts are good but the quality isn't... stuff will fall apart on you.

I do have one question... how do you know a shirt is one designed to be tucked in or not? Does it have to do with length?

Which, of course, is why everyone looks to Kiev for the latest in fashion.

Look at the tail (hem) of the shirt. If it's "scalloped" (much higher at the gusset, or side, than the placket), either it should be tucked in or you're wearing ****ty Italian club gear. If it's relatively straight it should be untucked. Generally shirts that should be tucked in are much longer than those which aren't designed for it.

Some shirts, however, are designed to be worn untucked and are still long. These look terrible and you should avoid them.

Banana is roughly the same quality as Gap, but twice the price. Act accordingly.

All you really need is a couple nice pairs of Diesels (~$100 on sale), some American Apparel fitted T-shirts ($5) and a nice jacket (none of that Northface or bubble jacket ****, it's played out). That will make you look better than 90% of the college guys out there who rock their baggy jeans and hooded sweatshirts to class.

If you want to talk, talk to your friends. If you want a girl to like you, listen to her, ask questions, and act like you are on the edge of your seat.
