I wonder how well this did at the box office. At the opening night, all 14 theaters were packed. I can't imagine how filled it was on the actual opening day. I saw even kids dressed up as Batman going into the theaters. I really wouldn't be surprised if it cracked into the top 10 box office sales of all time in the US.

It sold out in every New York theater on opening day.

I'd have to say TDK was the most epic movie I've ever seen. Heath Ledger seriously deserves an Oscar, every Joker scene was absolutely majestic.

"Why so serious?"

I actually did a little research myself and at the midnight showing it pulled in $17 million. On opening day it earned $50 million so in total it earned $67 million, and I doubt that it's going to slow down. The critics are on its side and for those bunch that were skeptical of the movie, they're eventually going to be pulled into the hype.

The big question is can Heath Ledger snag a posthumous Oscar for his spellbound brilliant performance? I do believe his performance is Oscar worthy, but the Oscars traditionally and characteristically award serious art flicks which nobody really hears about until the Oscar nominations are announced. In the eyes of Academy voters, which are comprised of old school directors, writers, and actors, The Dark Knight already has two strikes against it; it's a summer blockbuster and it's a comic book. But obstacles can be overcome and The Dark Knight has a trifecta of factors which coalesce into a perfect storm for Oscar consideration; a great actor who dies in his prime, delivering an iconic performance, in a perfect movie. As of the moment I write, the film scores nearly perfect on Rotten Tomatoes (94%) and is ranked by IMDb as the best movie ever, knocking The Godfather out of place (an overreaction which won't last, but still nonetheless a positive sign it may reach the Oscars).

Pencil scene = Funniest thing I've seen. I was in stitched.

Joker in the hospital cracked me up as well.

Anyone that thinks he doesn't deserve at least a nomination is a douche.

the latest reports have it bringing in about 68 million opening day. It beat out Spiderman 3 for the record and will more then likely top the weekend record.

Yeah I know, he who is not to be spoiled is one of my favorite villains in the Batman series and it was really a treat to have them introduce him in the movie.
They could have split it into two good movies, but I'm glad they made it one big great one. That's prob my favorite villain too.

I went with a bunch of stupid girls that didn't appreciate the brilliance of it all.

Loved the ending. I don't see how people saw it as bleak... ya its not the classic happy sugar coated ending, but it shows character and inspiration. Doing the right thing even if you get hated for it. No ***** footing endings when people are not left without scars. The fact it's a mainstream summer 'blockbuster' film is a shocker.

I'm glad it is making good money, it deserves it. On my book, it doesn't matter if the film (or Ledger) gets nominated or wins, it will last and be remembered through the test of time.

Could an adaptation of Miller's Dark Knight Returns be around the corner?

Now that you said that, this movie does open the door for an adaptation of Framk Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns". Although, sadly, Heath Ledger's brilliance (which would have been perfect for Miller's take on the Joker) will have to be replaced by someone else who will have some big shoes to fill.

Did anyone else find the part where Ledger comes out of the hospital wearing the nurses outfit funny? Then the detonator doesnt work so he clicks it a few more times then BOOM! I loved that part!

This thread contains some spoilers that people might not want to read. Andy, maybe you should put a disclaimer saying, "read at your own risk".

Anyway, this movie was great. I didn't think BB could've been topped because that movie is packed with philosophical concepts. But this movie takes it up a notch. It not only packs more complex philosophy, but it also packs more action, and great acting by almost all of the main characters and supporting characters.

I wish the guy playing Maroni had more lines or was a better actor because Maroni is a fearful character but I guess his presence was overshadowed by Joker, Harvey Dent, Rachel Dawes, and of course, Batman.

There is SOO much going on in the movie that you have to watch it couple of times to really get the little perks and subtle hints and clues about the main plot. Come to think of it, there wasn't ONE main plot, more like multiple main plots.

And the ending was perfect. Just exactly what I was looking for because of the movie title and how it all had played out till then. I'm glad Nolan stayed true to the comic books story context, particularly Frank Millers and Soeb/Sales. No more Ka-Pow and Craaack! Adam West versions!

Oh, and the soundtrack/score was brilliant. Especially Joker's score! Terrifying to the core! It literally sent chills down my spine. And I'm glad they kept the score playing throughout the whole movie. Gives you a feeling of "on the edge of your seat" the entire time.

What I love the most about this movie is that both the inner and outer battles are great. Bruce Wayne's battle against the public and making Harvey Dent the true hero of the city of Gotham and the battle against Joker. In the end it was awesome how they both kind of intertwined.
