When we go out at night we tend to bump into things at night. There is a potential of meeting up against shady characters who may want to beat the crap out of (possibly kill ) us for various reasons (he is drunk and wants to fight, you looked at his gf the wrong way, he wants to rob you etc). Often if the guy is bigger then you he would see it as advantage (size does matter). If you are just a strong guy and you have limited skills you will end up like this guy facing a bigger opponant (kimbo):

clearly Kimbo is the bigger stronger fighter and having the same skills as the other fighter, he would eventually overpower him. Most guys that pick fights are pure brawlers. They are big strong and violent but they have limited fighting skills.
Its best to take martial arts to better yourself because you never know who will you meet up. Taking muay thai, brazilian jujitsu or even krav maga will get you the edge you need to overcome your typical street brawler. Better punching Grappling and kicking techniques will give you that edge. Beside your strength you really need to work on your cardio because you can be fatigue rather quickley and lose out as a result. You need to have as much energy as possible. Now lets look at another fighter with Mixed Martial Arts background taking on Kimbo:

Due to the limited rules imposed on this fight Gannon would have finished Kimbo alot sooner. He had more energy left in him then Kimbo (working on cardio helped him) he was able to hold onto his opponent and immobilized him while punching him. If Gannon were allowed to kick and grapple on the floor in this fight he would have easily won. It all boils down to Skill, Strength, size ,energy and intelligence. If you got 3 out of the 5 really pegged down you will win and possibly get out of a very sticky situation.
