If you wanna ask in a way that doesn't seem needy so it softens the rejection the best way to do it is to frame it like you are going to go weather she comes or not.

"I'm going to the movies tomorrow night, wanna come with?" ..

"Im going to this concert next week, wanna come?"

Don't ask if she is free. Do you think the guy in my avatar cares if a chick is free or not? You assume you are the best option when you ask her and she will put the other prospects behind you in her queue.

Better to be direct. "I want to see that beautiful smile again. Give me your phone number. Let's plan something soon"

I like this method. But it also makes it easier for her to say no because she knows you're not directly asking her out on a date.
