Rate the Tips !!

This forum is the only one with thread rating enabled. You can use this feature to rate the tips on a scale from 1 (not too good) to 5 (great) with 3 being an average tip.

After about 10 votes or so the ratings will show up.

So after reading a tip, go to the bottom of the page and rate it. Hopefully this will prove to be valuable info for all forum members.


And if your tip doesn't get a very good rating, then this just means that maybe you need to give it a little more thought next time.

but tips should only be posted in the tips forum. Isn't that the point? I think this is an excellent idea. Generally rating threads does not work because it's subjective, but with a forum like this, I think rating should work perfectly!

I think if we are going to do this it is just as important that people rate tips bad when they thing they are bad as it is to rate them when they think they are good.

Could I elaborate on that?

If I am already aware of an idea/tip, then that idea/tip isnt as useful to me. Therefore I would be inclined to give it a lower rating. This doesnt mean the tip is "bad" or "good", it just means that I dont find it as useful.

I think it would be an interesting experiment to have 2 different "ratings", one for usefulness, and one for quality. Just to see what the average user of this site finds usefull, and the quality manner in which best present it to them.

Or if it is unlikly that a secon rating will be added, I believe it should be stressed more (in the main post) that just because an article isnt "useful" for you, it doesnt mean its a bad one.

This rating system will become pointless. People will rate only the ones they like with '5' stars and ignore the rest. No one will bother even voting on the ones they don't like. In the end, there will be several '5' star posts and all the rest will have... no rating!

People skim through the posts, click on the ones they find interesting. If they do not like it, they quickly go to another topic.

Usually the replies are a better indicator for a good post. Besides, it is more conversational to reply, "Great post!" rather than click on stars.

I agree that it's more conversational. However some posts, even though they may be good don't encourage a lot of conversation. People should only reply if they have a point to discuss or feel they have something to add. If the post is clearly meant to make the reader just stare in awe at the words carved in stone and feel like he is on some sort of grand mission, not much discussion is really necessary. The reader can simply rate it as to how he liked it. Most of us don't give a crap to read "great post, so-and-so" with no discussion of what was written, except perhaps the author in some cases.

I agree that there is really no value in reading pages and pages of back slapping "great post" nonsense. Also, when original post gets loaded with tons of meaningless praise, it often becomes easy for the original poster to "miss" reading a meaningful reply or two that actually have clear and specific questions that would encourage discussion.

Finally, I can't tell you have much paper and ink I have wasted printing posts that only have one page of content, and 20 pages of praise.

Therefore, I am all for the new rating system.

Not to sound bitter or anything but before the site overhaul I made a suggestion that people be able to rate posts on tips. It was totally shot down.

Needless to say I still think its a good idea and an alternative way to find interesting posts without having to throw them all into a bible.

Now, to bring this thread off topic:

What's with all the ancient posts that have been getting bumped to the top lately? I wouldn't mind, except it's mostly stuff that is already stashed in the DJB, so there's no need to retrieve the threads.

However, if you run across any of pook's older posts, bump those so I can grab them for the Book of pook project.


BTW, I gave this thread a 1 just for the hell of it.

This is exactly what hasn't been happening, but I gotta admit I generally don't skip the tips with the stars, but I am sadly disappointed with most of the FIVE STAR TIPS! Generally the five star tips are written for newbies with the occational exception.

Oh well I've always been one to root for the underdog. I find myself looking for sleeper tips and try and give them some love.

Might just be me, but isn't this exactly how the current situation is now? (with the exception of SexPDX's "get a Tongue Scraper!" with 3 stars hehe)
