It's been in the news a lot lately how Phil Robertson, the father on the TV show Duck Dynasty, has been suspended indefinitely by A&E. He was suspended for remarks he made in an interview about gays and blacks.

Regarding his remarks about gays, from what I saw he was just quoting the Bible. This is my problem with the whole thing. I have no problem with gay people, I know quite a few, and it isn't my place to judge them. We are all sinners, after all, if you go by the Christian faith. I have better things to do than worry about how other people live their life. My problem is that in the current PC culture, a man is not allowed to quote the Bible, or else he will get suspended.

The article I read pointed out that many Christians take a pro-gay stance, and that the references in the Bible are either misunderstood, or do not matter because they are outdated. Regardless of that, it is at least a matter of interpretation, and how you view scripture as it relates to the faith. The problem is that the PC Police are dictating what you believe, or else you will be labeled as a homophobe and a hater.

I can't say much about his remarks about black people, because I'm not sure what he said. The news article I read implied that he said that blacks were happier under Jim Crow laws. However, the only quotes I saw said nothing of the kind, only that he used to work with blacks in the fields as a poor white kid, and that they sang, did not grumble, and were happy. Regardless, the main weight of the story was about his "homophobic" remarks, and that was what I was posting about, not the racial comments.

My intent in posting this wasn't to dump on gay people. What bugs me is that we supposedly have freedom of religion in this country, but someone like Phil Robertson is not allowed to believe what it says in his Bible.

I know this isn't a government issue, it isn't a freedom of speech issue, and that A&E has the right to exercise its freedom of speech rights by acting against what they consider to be hate speech by an employee. But the point is that the culture of today does not allow Phil Robertson to hold this opinion - to follow his interpretation of what the Bible says - without calling him a bigot and a hater.

Christianity was, at one time at least, considered the mainstream religion of the US. But today the country worships instead at the feet of political correctness, which now trumps everything else. It's not enough to tolerate homosexuals, you have to embrace homosexuality. You have to say "By golly, homosexuality is all right by me!" or you are labelled a hater.

I'm not really trying to get into theology here, but I think the Old Testament says that. The Old Testament sets up the Law (which makes everyone sinners), whereas the New Testament is about forgiveness, and shows the way to salvation through grace.

They have rejected all Christian beliefs, so the media-journalistic left has to 'create' their own explanation for the moral code that absolutely exists in the world, and always has. But to them, it means everyone is equal, and we all need to regress back to the mean. So that means successful white men are in the bulls-eye. And we'll eventually find out that system doesn't work. What I don't get, is why people choose to care so much about one person in this idealistic movement, like Trayvon Martin. How many people die in this country every year, for various reasons, but we're supposed to care about him? Ha, what's even more ironic is white liberals becoming crime victims at the hands of the very animals they want to 'help'.

I am 180 degrees opposed to what this guy stands for. I don't mind gay people. Unlike some, I grew up in a city and had gay neighbors as well as a gay aunt and uncle. It's been a small part of my life as long as I can remember. Obviously I have lived more of a varied life than many and accept almost everything that comes along with it. I also grew up in the Quaker religion and still am a part of a religious community that does include homosexuals.

That said I don't think what he said about gay people merits a suspension or a firing. He did not set out to be deliberately offensive. He is expressing his religious beliefs which still deserve the respect afforded them despite their obvious wrongness. And that respect doesn't include mocking, of which he is definitely deserving, but does deserve the continued ability to make a living. Certain targets are easier for interest groups, especially those of a Southern White variety, and the condemnation is getting a little ridiculous. Paula Dean's coal raking for having called someone who stuck a gun in her face a n-gger 20 years ago was just the beginning.

Also, for what it's worth, I think what he said about black people was actually meant slightly offensively. When he said they were happier prior to welfare and entitlements he was linking angry black people and welfare which is a gross overstatement of who they are and what they've been through. It's also mighty white of him. Can you imagine the response of some Southerners to angry black people in the 50s? I can, and it's not pretty. I'd pretend to be happy and sing too if that's what I was facing.
