I just read this Roissy post on how pets are an unconscious extension of how we see ourselves, and it got me thinking...since I own a cat. I wouldn't consider myself beta by any stretch, but I'm also not the greatest player in the game.

It's just a personal preference for an aloof, low-maintenance animal with survival instincts. It seems suitable that alphas can own cats. I would think it's more of an extension of the types of women we're drawn to rather than an extension of the ego. Thoughts?

I have an Alaskan husky and 2 saltwater fish tanks full of fish. saltwater fish are very high matience, having a 2YO son who thinks every fish in the world is nemo and wants to "play" with them is even worse, but ghostzapper (my dog) is my buddy. very low maintenance, just give him some food, let him go outside and use it, get out of the way of the TV and don't sit on his chair and you are good to go.

I think the bigger issue is why do people think of cats as feminine and dogs as masculine. cats, in the wild are the most ferocious mammals on he planet.

which would would you rather get in a fight with

I don't know about you but i know which one i would take my chances with.

there is nothing feminine about cats IMHO. they sit around your house when you aren't paying attention and kill rodents for ****s and giggles. that's pretty bad ass IMHO.

on the other hand, how a woman treats HER pets can tell you a lot about a woman. how her pet treats her can tell you even more. my wife, i guess I do too now, we own 2 race horses that are still babies. everytime they see her you can't get them to sit still they know it's carrot and peppermint time. they know she's going to play w9ith them and it's going to be all good. what about the woman whose dog runs out of the house like an escaped slave running to freedom everytime the door cracks open? or you go o ver a girls house and she has a dog and you are rubbing it and you see / feel ticks everywhere on the dog. or you peep into the pantry and see an empty bag of dog food and no food in the dog tray and the dog just looking at your meal like he is going to kill you for it. you what i pay attention to stuff like that. I can leave my door wide ass open, ghostzapper isn't' going anywhere. when it's somewhat cool outside (We are in California) i will even let him stay outside just by himself hours at a time since he likes the cold, no chain, he will walk around but he won't leave the front yard. he knows how good he has it. belly rubs and treats all day long, no labor.

or what about the woman that just takes her pets a little bit too seriously? that tells me a lot too. like i knew one girl that had one of those little taco bell dogs and would walk h im around with a diaper on. i'm like okay you are crazy and that's just too much.

We always used to joke on a couple of my buddies who had cats. "Never trust a man who owns cats" is what we used to say. It was just fun though. I will say that I cannot thing of one guy I know personally who was a serious player who had a cat. All dogs or fish tanks. Just my experience (anecdotes do not equal evidence.)

As for women. My ex refused to get her dog when we split. She begged for that little girly dog, a pomeranian that I bought for her. She barely took care of it. I ended up training it and making sure it didn't go stir crazy and got exercise. When we split she discarded it without a second thought. I kept it for a year because my daughter was attached to it, before I finally gave it to good family. A grown single man walking a damn pom everyday. My neighbors surely thought I was a gay.

The funny thing was, with me, the dog became less of nuisance and less high strung. She was actually well behaved, I didn't have to crate her, she would hold it till I got home and I could walk her off the leash and she would come when I called. (also, girls did love to stop and pet the pretty dog, but when they found out I was single, I got the side eye. I would usually tell them it was my daughters dog and that would work.) When we all lived together I think the chaos was reflected in the dog. Ever since then I tend to think that dogs reflect their owners. I know it's not true, but I still tend to judge people by how their dogs act sometimes.

If Roissy's theory is true (which I doubt), cats are fairly picky about who they give their affection to (compared to dogs). So that might explain why such a person might not be a player. They have too much of a filter to be a real manwh0re.

Cats are very independent and are one of the most adaptable mammal species on the planet, so I'm not sure why they are so closely associated with the feminine.

Roissy points out that a lot of PUA behavior is more "cat like" (aloof, indifferent) than "dog like" (needy, approval seeking). But a lot of PUA behavior is "flipping the script", so who knows?

I think cats are more affectionate than they are given credit for though.

I agree with the general message of that article. But as usual not all circumstances can be dictated by generalities. I think Roissy knows that, but good article nonetheless. I like how he relates it to how an owner treats a pet, not whether or not the pet is actually alpha or beta. Some of that is natural and ingrained at birth.

Death to all cats. At least that's the opinion of my two German Shepherds.
My two shepherds agree, but they are also smart enough to know not to touch my two cats.

Here's a good dog article that was out this week:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/05/magazine/wonder-dog.html

Like many German shepherds, Ben was a one-person dog. He seemed to watch Shirk closely when she returned to her apartment following open-heart surgery. “I had a daytime nurse but was alone at night,” she says. “I was on a morphine pump and — though I didn’t realize it — a deadly combination of drugs. I slipped into unconsciousness.” When the phone rang, Ben waited — as he’d been trained to do — for Shirk’s command to answer it rather than to let it ring into the answering machine. But that night, with his owner failing, Ben picked up the receiver without her command, dropped it on the bed and barked and barked. It was Shirk’s father. Realizing something was wrong, her father hung up and called 911. The rescue team told Shirk she wouldn’t have lived through the night.

I dunno. Probably cheaper than buying one of those portable carpet cleaners at Home Depot.

In that case, I'd say she's treating the dog as a surrogate child.

This is another one of those "only Alphas own/do [insert activity or object]" things.

When I was in high school, my math teacher was telling me a story about a famous bull fighter who was very well respected. If I can remember correctly, he was washing dishes while many fans stood outside of his house. His friend laments to him that washing dishes is not a very manly thing to do, and that he should avoid being seen doing it.

He responds "Anything I do is manly."

You can own a dog and be feminine. You can own a cat and be alpha. It depends on how you do it. Respect to the first guy who can own a chihuahua and get laid by many different women at the same time.

I think that cats are more associated with the feminine because women are more likely to own them. They are however, more masculine animals. That explains why women are more likely to prefer them.

Cats display more alpha qualities. They don't need their owners at all really. They are perfectly capable of hunting their own prey and they don't need company although they will gladly take it if it suits them. Cats do what they want and they're not concerned with impressing anyone or anything.

On the other hand dogs tend to be more beta. In fact, the domestic dog is essentially a very beta/omega wolf. We bred out the canine instincts that make a dog seek dominance and independence and we selected for obedience and docility. An adult dog displays many traits that are only present in wolf pups.

Men love dogs because they are childlike and feminine. This is precisely because we bred them to be that way.

I have 3 cats, 2 by choice and 1 my ex dumped on me. They give me all sorts of attention and affection, but you can't chase them. You have to just chill and sit down and they'll come to you. If you ignore them, then they beg for attention. Sound familiar?

Wellllll...there might a little bias in your photo selection ha.

And to be fair, since wolves hunt in packs in the wild, a more realistic comparison would be *one* of these or *twelve+* of these working in unison to take you down...

Ever heard of a seeing eye cat?

No.

I value loyalty above all things...dogs for me.
