I don't know, I really don't care, I was never a fan of HP. Can't stand the excitement around it either hah, but oh well.

People will go crazy for whatever you tell them to go crazy for. You tell them the Ipod is the hottest thing, next thing you know you have people lining up outside the door to pay 600 dollars for something that lasts for only 6 hours before the batteries run out.

I completely disagree with all of you. The Harry Potter books have brought imagination and the desire to read back to children and adults alike. I love these books. They've gotten kids off of the goddamned x-box and ps3 and THAT is a very tall order.

As a writer, I see the narrative complexities Rowling is able to extrapulate and make fresh and available to all of her fans over and over again.

So there :moon:

Agreed. intrestingly enough around here it seems to be the popular kids who are more intrested in it. It was my generation that grew up reading the first few books (literally 80% of kids were reading them in my class) so it's not just a nerd thing around here. For me, its as if you see one movie you have seen them all. Same with the books. A year or so ago i tried to start reading them again when i was bored and the writing really isn't good at all - i quit after the first 2 pages.

That's poor form mate.

How dare you call Harry Potter a midget and a dork.

And what is the basis for labelling Star Wars as homosexual?

And how dare you place that disclaimer at the end to prevent dorks from flaming you!

its the date rape scene jk rowling hinted http://www.theonion.com/content/video/j_k_rowling_hints_at_harry_potter

Seriously though, I love the books. The characters are compelling and the plot is awesome. I don't like the movies though.

A lot of people do hate Harry Potter cuz lots of other good stories don't get nearly as much attention as Harry Potter does. The top literature readers just label the masses as dumb and that they have no taste in literature. While the masses are lacking literature experience, I don't think their poor taste implies that Harry Potter is some dumb book for everyone too stupid/lazy to go out and engage in more stories. I think the popularity of Harry Potter is cause by the following:
-The 'fun' magical settings of the book. The castle, magic, wizards, ect.
-It appeals to kids and adults
-Compared to other books, it is very interesting to read starting in the first chapter. With most books, it takes a little longer to generate the same interest, at this point most people will have given up because they are not being entertained
-Of course, the compelling characters and deep plot.

What other books have these qualities?
-Tolkien's LOTR
-Frank Herbert's Dune series
-Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles
-Pier's Anthony's Xanth
-Asimov's Robot and Foundation series
-Anne McCaffery's Pern stories
-books by John Bellairs
-A few books by R.L Stine
-The Choose Your Own Adventure series (from the 70s and 80s)
-Douglas Adam's Hitchiker's Guide books
-just damn near a lot of other books and authors.
All of these sold millions without a lot of media hype!
IMO, the popularity is based on the fact that the publishers spend million$$ to advertise it and hype it. If the books were that good, they would sell themselves without all the mania and hyperbole. Just listening to some of those poor idiots in line talking about how Harry Potter was the center of their life for years. Maybe now that Pottermania is over, they'll get a real life, eh? And read some decent books while they're at it.

well I certainly wasn't waiting in line at midnight for a book. I just read the summarized version up on Wikipedia. Took 5 minutes and now I have a bag full of spoilers to use and piss off some fans.

LOL. back when i was 14, when the TITANIC movie came out...i was at the movie theatres a few days after i had just seen it cuz i was going to see a different one..

anywho, i used to walk in and out of the theatres that had the TITANIC showing just to try and catch a glimpse at the nude scene with kate winslet....and the thing is...i went around watching for a little bit and just yelled out "Jack dies at the end..." .....man o man! people would be pissed! There was an auditorium packed with people, most still tried to stay silent (because it is still a movie theatre
) but you can hear people say "FVCK!..MAN!...SH!T!"...i eventually got caught because the theatre guy went up to me threatening to kick me out if i continued...but MAn...that was fun!

I, back then thought it was hillarious to spoil sh!t for people!, but MAN! that movie was sad...almost made me cry...this fat girl in the front row was crying her eyeballs out...that is when she wasnt stuffing her face with extra large popcorns, hot dogs, and pretzels n sh!t....but now im just ranting...lol hey, i was 14!

People may actually seriously kill you if you did that. There are some hardcore fanatics out there. Some say that if Rawlings, the author, makes it so that Harry Potter dies in the final book, someone may try to kill her (the author).
