Sorry to hear about your Xmas. Hope you recover from it well.

The first thing I did when I bought a house was install an alarm system. I didn't care if it cost me extra money, I have a lot of valuables. That 5hit needs to be protected somehow.

I've had both of my cars broken into. After the second time, I began leaving a light on in my house 24/7. Since then, nothing has happened. Those energy saver bulbs will also cut down on your electricity bill :)

Another thing that you can do is leave the TV or radio going when you're out. I've done that a few times.

Backing up data is a good idea as well. With my more valuable stuff, I make two copies - one I keep at home, one I keep at work. That way, if the house should burn down or everything gets stolen, I still have another copy elsewhere.

Anyway, I wish you the best on your move! I've had to move without any help multiple times. It sucks, but the most determined people will do it, and do it successfully. It all comes down to your survival instinct.

One of my closest friends is a Deputy Sheriff and he once gave me extremely sound advice if I were to ever shoot someone running away from me. Make damned sure that the guy is shot again through the exit wound. This way the M.E. or forensics cannot determine which shot came first.
But they would be able to tell it was from very close range.

I don't know what the laws are about shooting somebody to stop them if they are committing a crime. I've heard about "citizen's arrests," but don't know if that's an urban legend, or has some real significance.

I do think if you shot their tires before they drive away, yoiu would be OK legally. Then call the cops and follow them.

I was robbed at gunpoint some time ago, and caught up with one of the perpetrators, following at a distance in my car. He didn't even know. The cops got him after the dumb ass went into a party store.

However, if the act is proceeded by circumstances that would cause another person to believe reasonably that he/she is in danger of being injured, then an assault has been committed. As long as there is an overt act and the victim believes attack is imminent, then assault is committed, even if someone prevents the assailant from attacking or the assailant decides not to attack. For example

Assume that I verbally threatened to cut you with a knife and I reach into my pocket just as I step toward you. Although you cannot readily determine if I have a knife you are legally permitted to defend yourself on the assumption that I do have a knife, since my actions would convince any reasonable person that I have a knife and I intend to commit bodily injury. Even if I am bluffing, you have acted justifiably if you defend yourself.

The state may charge a person with either an assault or a battery. However, since an assault must logically proceed a battery, many states call a battery an "assault and battery."
This is an interesting part of most self-defense laws that most people don't know about: you don't have to wait for the other guy to "throw the first punch." If you perceive, in a "reasonable" manner, that an attack is about to take place you don't have to wait; you can get in first strike against the other guy and it still be considered self-defense.

Sorry to hear that happen to you bro.

That reminds me, I should probably get some sort of insurance on my stuff and possibly an alarm. In the past year I spent $$$$ renovating my condo and buying new appliances and furniture.

Oh and yeah, f*ck the haters, they just jealous.
