The first thing I did when I bought a house was install an alarm system. I didn't care if it cost me extra money, I have a lot of valuables. That 5hit needs to be protected somehow.
I've had both of my cars broken into. After the second time, I began leaving a light on in my house 24/7. Since then, nothing has happened. Those energy saver bulbs will also cut down on your electricity bill
Another thing that you can do is leave the TV or radio going when you're out. I've done that a few times.
Backing up data is a good idea as well. With my more valuable stuff, I make two copies - one I keep at home, one I keep at work. That way, if the house should burn down or everything gets stolen, I still have another copy elsewhere.
Anyway, I wish you the best on your move! I've had to move without any help multiple times. It sucks, but the most determined people will do it, and do it successfully. It all comes down to your survival instinct.
