"Practise martial arts to get more confidence" is what they say. "If you are afraid of other men practise martial arts.". "When you have your first fight you'll notice you are not made of glass".

I practised martial arts in so many schools and almost all different styles that I can confidently say: "No, it's not the instructor's fault, it's the expectation that is being created by people who have no experience with this field".

Truth is, getting hit is not "no big deal". I got hit and my nose bone cracked. And no, the sparring wasn't too intense. I can say that cause I have the comparison most people lack.

Fighting IS dangerous. I still don't understand how some people can be willing to have fight after fight. And no, you are not made of glass. But close to.

Even the softest sparring gets you headaches afterwards if being hit on the head.

And no, you don't become confident if you are being beaten up and realize that it hurts more than expected and in some instances see your bones crack or even break.

I started martial arts to gain more confidence as people say just to realize that all I got was being beaten up - in every school. My confidence is now as low as never before. I know that getting into a fight will leave me severely hurt.

Is that supposed to be the confidence people talk about?

u r not supposed to be hit at all UNTIL YOU ARE REDBELT, which takes at least 6 months to reach, working at it at least 3 hours per week, classes of over 4 people are a waste fo time and money, cause all you learn is bad habits. decent instruction, small class, is going to cost you at least $20 an hour, bud. after red belt, with PADDING, need to get the feel of being hit and hitting people, with FOCUS, to parts of you that can take it, like the buttocks, abs, forehead, outside top of arm. anything else is just stupid. It sounds like you paid big money up front, and they wanted to run you off, so they had room for some other sucker in their 'class".

It is possible you just found a few bad dojos. Beating up new people is pretty pathetic behavior. It's not like it's hard - trained women fight better than untrained men. In a good program, students of all ability levels and sizes should be able to train with each other and even spar without anyone getting hurt. Male and female mma fighters train together all the time. Not hurting your training partner is one of the first things we teach. That's what separates professionals from idiots.

It is possible
It is not. This is why I put the parts in bold letters because sh.itty answers like yours are all over the place. They are all the same: "Bad dojo/instructor, WEEEEEEEEE do it TOOOOOTALLY differently." No, you don't.

yes, I do teach differently. the first time you hurt a student is normally the last time that you see them. I've never seen a place or people as stupid as you have apparently run across.

maybe a "softer" art, something like aikido, is more for you?
And how am I supposed to use that against a practicioner of for instance muay thai?

Oh yeah right I forgot I will be oh so superior that I'll walk away from a fight and let the attacker have the girl I am talking to. After all nothing is worth fighting.

You, bradd80, did not mature in martial arts you got hit so many times to the head that you became unworldly.

I'm suprised that a guy like you who claims to have tried so many different arts doesn't understand this basic concept.
I am not surprised that all you know about Aikido is from the description in you local dojo's ad.

There is an example.Oh I forgot, that contradicts your theories so the aikido practicioner in the video must lack the ability to apply aikido. It cannot be any other way, because then you would have to admit that you know nothing about aikido.

you really shouldnt be sparring harder than 75%, and with the safety gear you should not be going home with concussions and broken noses, the problem is that many people dont know the difference between fighting and sparring

also i would recommend jiu jitsu over aikido any day, here is an old clip of a skater using very basic jiu jitsu to take down and subdue a guy trying to punch him

foreverAFC, personally I believe that the strength of any martial art relies largely on the ability, strength, and size of its practitioner. In the case of jiu-jitsu vs aikido, both of these arts use a similar variety of joint locks and takedowns, and I think which art would win would depend more on which opponent has mastered his art to a better degree.

I do know one thing: jiu-jitsu favors the takedown, and if you got an aikido expert that close to you he would easily break your hand or arm before you would do much damage.
most aikido is practiced with a partner that is letting you perform the techniques on him while in jiu jitsu you are always competing against people who are resisting you. cause otherwise aikido would then look like wrestling or judo or jiu jitsu.

here is an aikido master vs a jiu jitsu/wrestling style grappler

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLP_DInpPHE

all those wristlocks and arm locks are in jiu jitsu as well, the difference is the uke is not cooperating with you, you have to figure out your own way to trick him into it, if you like aikido you will love jiu jitsu

ok and here's a video of an aikido expert taking down a much larger jiujitsu practitioner:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPx7IAlRj_A

I mean posting isolated videos of one guy beating another does not prove the superiority of one art over another.

It's all about which practitioner has mastered his art to be a better degree.

sorry but that is a demonstration you are seeing, the "jiu jitsu guy" is not actually resisting he is letting the aikido master show off his techniques

also check out this old pre UFC style vs style video the gracies made to promote their style of jiu jitsu, it shows them using jiu jitsu against a variety of styles

take a look at mma fighter shinya aokis joint locking skills, he actually breaks one dudes arm with a straight up aikido arm lock though its found in judo and jiu jitsu as well

and one more, sakuraba the professional wrestler who destroyed the gracie empire with his powerful grappling skills

if the OP is chicken , who is scared of a few cracks in his bones, then he can try aikido, you can't get hurt in that one, downside is that its not effective for self defence ....

also martial arts are for your soul, not your body, the westerners have got it all wrong . if you wanna be a fighter then boxing is the best IMO

also bradd80 is right.in a real fight there are no rules, you might take down the guy with one sweep, and initiate an arm lock, but then his friends will come out of the bushes and start kicking your head like a football.

boxing teaches you to do STUPID things, like LET other people hit you, "hang" on their arms(or do it yourself) DISREGARD the lower body (offensively or defensively) A real kicker will CRIPPLE a boxer-only man in a heart beat. If I drop to the crab position, and come for a boxer, what CAN he do, but flee? If I get within my leg's reach of HIS legs, he is toast. If he comes down to my level, he is making a HUGE mistake! :) Boxers never learn to use any other sort of strike, learn to leave their hands LOOSELY clenched, learn to IGNORE little jabs (that CAN be eye gouges) never learn to block kicks, or kick, never learn to GRAB anything, as well as all sorts of other stupid crap.

The youtube video I posted is no more a "demonstration" video than the one you posted. In my video the jiu jitsu expert is attacking the aikido expert and is taken down.
wrong, the video i posted the two guys were sparring against each other, the video you posted was a demonstration, they were not sparring, and the so called "jiu jitsu guy" was clearly highly trained in aikido as you can clearly see he breakfalls when all those wristlocks are applied to him, he is just as instrumental in this demonstration as the aikido master. if aikido practitioners could really do that to grapplers then why arent they in all the top grappling competitions or winning MMA, there is tons of money to be made if thats case.

bradd80 said:
In a real fight if you came at me with a jiu jitsu sweep I'd simply gouge out both your eyes.

yeah ok why train in anything at all then, we can just rip out peoples eyes. this is a myth, its a lot harder to rip out eyes and testicles when your balance is broken and some average high school wrestler is double legging you into concrete or some dude is raining blows down on you.

bradd80 said:
This is why close quarter arts like MMA and jiu jiutsu are not great against well experienced fighters in real life-or-death combat; in real life, if you get too close to a trained killer like that he'll rip out your eyes or crush your testacles.
again you are perpetuating a myth, its not as easy as you make it sound to just rip out someones eye or crush his testicles. get some real training where you can actually practice techniques against fully resisting opponents.

i think more real life encounters have been ended by a classic one-two combo than you probably realize

I'm gonna say it, OP is a weakling and a pu55y.

There now that I've got that off my chest, I don't believe any discipline is better then the other they all have their strong and weak points, but one thing is for sure no matter how good you are at your discipline in a street fight the rules change, because there are no rules. You're in a fight or die situation and this is when you do anything and everything necessary to walk away with your life.

The funny thing is in a real street fight where you're about to get mugged or stabbed its always the cheap shots that work the best, mix in a bit of any discipline you know and you will get away easily.

As for people willing to step into a ring and compete, its a animal thing you either have that urge in you or you got mothered too long and have forgotten what it feels like to be a man and challenge another man in a bout where strength stamina and technique decide the victor.

yes, vs other people with no training. :) I have only had to actually strike guys a very few times. Once, i stopped a front snapkick just in front of a guy's nose, and he flung himself backward so hard that he cut his head on something. He remained there, on one knee, cursing me, but no fight left in him at all, when he previously "wanted' me. Considerably taller, more muscled than me, and out of the action with a mere flick of my leg. A similar occasion, I stopped such a kick at his nose, and he TRIED to grab my leg on the way down. I set it down, and snapped another one up, "setting" the focus about 1/2" into his nose. blood went everywhere, and all he COULD do was hold his face. :) you dont have to fight trained men, and training to do so is silly, really, but you have to spar and so do your fellow trainees, so mostly you tend to think in terms of stuff that works on trained men, but it need not be so. Eye gouges and nut techiques work GREAT on untrained opponents. It does not MATTER that they don't work so well on trained men, cause you will never have to fight such men in self defense. Or I should say, if you do have one as your opponent, it's cause YOU are the a hole who NEEDS to have his ass kicked. Not 1 man in 1000 is TRULY well trained and fighting fit, but it used to be 1 in 100,000, here in US.

I am not a pus.sy. Quite the contrary. In spite of you I faced my fears. I had fights outside of the training room and it was ugly.

My beef with martial arts goes beyond short-sighted opinions like "wrong dojo".

But hey, what does being persistent look like, have you ever thought about that? It means that you destroy all of your bones in the short run if you don't understand why you don't succeed. You cannot just continue hoping it will get better. It won't. You need someone to tell you what you are doing wrong and give you a sense of achievement.

Also: Look at Mystery and Leonardo DiCaprio. Both are skinny and if you see them you don't perceive them as a threat. But they managed to have sex with the hottest girls out there.

Do you really think I need to fight just because some internet-tough-guy says that who turns out to be a 12 yo virgin? Or a 40yo virgin who has never fought back?

When I go out I barely see fights, but I see laws and most people obey them. You train and train for the 1 per cent of situations when the laws permit you to punch someone. Not a big surprise that most people fail in those situations.

But hey, you 12 years old kiddies have never been interested in creating something of value in the first place. You think you are special by repeating the old useless "a <insert ma> guy would win". No you are not special. You are pathetic because of that.
