Just take mthai. If you ever wanna defend yourself in a street fight. Karate or any sort of kung fu won't unless you got at least 10 years under the belt and "IF" you're good. How many times have you seen a person say "I know karate" and end up kicking their arse? And as for boxing, its great and all but it's a style based on rules and regulations. You'll learn to punch, parry and dodge, but the dodging you learn is meant to dodge meant to dodge regulated punches. So if you are going to learn boxing, you might as well add in some knees, elows and kicks to it with mthai. I'm not mthai biased or anything, but face it, its a type of style that you can just pick up using basics. I use to train an incorporated style of mthai, tkd, karate, sanshou and bokfu. Became a student trainer when I was 18 and trained beginners teaching them basics. Each style had stuff that were good, but most the stuff you're going to use ends up being mthai anyway. It would be nice if you learn some basic grapplings. A lot of ppl are naturals at it because hey wrestlle friendsn and family when they're little. You just need to know enough to escape and hold. Like someone mentioned earlier, ground fights arent useful because you can hurt yourself on the ground and someone can hit u with a bottle when you're choking someone. :)

I once saw a Tai chi guy have a pub fight with a MT guy.

The Tai chi guy moved in as the mt guy kicked, he slapped a backhand on stomach 9 and the MT guy went down like a sack of sh1t.

How repeatable this would be and what he would have done if he had missed I don't know, but on this day it certainly did work.

In to the death fights, or hand to hand combat what sort of styles have been used?

If you look at the Fairburn commando system, this is great if you are up against a static relatively untrained person. However big, you can kill them. But if they are wary or trained it won't work so well.

Therefore in my humble opinion, at this moment in time, I'd say Krav Maga is the best bet for most people.

If I wanted to make money out of MA. I would develop a 'system' but say it wasn't a 'system'.

It would consist of Wing Chun, western boxing and fencing strategies, and then I would add in a bit of Savate and stick fighting for my disciples.

This would mean I would be a legend in my own lifetime, even if I had an untimely death.

What do you mean it's already been done?:D

Muay thai comes from several different martial arts believe it or not. Alot of the techniques originaly used to fight in wars have been removed though because it is now a sport - although some clubs do teach the moves that are now banned. Theres a technique still used in military muay thai ( muay boran) were u bearhug the opponent with your arms oustide there arms so they cant move then put your chin on on there chest and simply fall forward this causes them to smash there head off the ground and knock them out. - i would not advise trying this at home because if they smack concrete you could kill the person.
