Anyone here into any martial arts and/or do mma fighting?

I recently starting doing BJJ, and I wish that I started this earlier.

Watching the UFC fights now....

I would love to get into it myself, but don't really have the time to devote to it. I'm probably going to be transitioning to a different business soon and if I do I will seriously consider it.

My big issue is that I would probably never be able to compete due to endurance issues caused by lung problems.

awesome. how long have you been fighting?
I have been training a little over a year. My first fight was in February, my second last month. I lost both of them, but they were fairly close decisions. I also promote amateur mma events, working for my trainer/promoter.

I've boxed since I was young. Philly gyms. Wrestled a little in high school.

Really want to learn bjj but I'm in nursing school and it's so damn expensive! Give me another year though.

Everything I've ever been shown I've really liked though.

I'm starting Thai Kickboxing next week. Seems sensible to learn how to defend myself physically and mentally before university, plus the training will increase my stamina, strength, posture and confidence - all things I'm in need of

I have been doing bjj for a little over 2 years now. Not as dedicated as I would like to be but I am a bluebelt in brazilian jiu-jitsu. I took some breaks my skills are that of a lowlevel blue but my skills should be a midlevel if I was more dedicated and had better luck with injuries.

I would like to work on my takedowns and my standup but when you have a full time job and other hobbies its hard to be the fighter you want to be.

Anyone watching the WEC fights tonight?

Miguel Torres is a badass mofo. And you would never imagine his skinny ass could fight.

Are you going to enter Naga Chicago in May? I will if you will. Let's go get drunk afterward if so.

Regarding takedowns, they are ten times easier when a guy is trying to punch you; simply duck under the punch and tackle him. In a bjj tournament, everyone wants to pull guard anyway, so the takedown is really nothing unless you can land in side control, which is not easy.

Do not be too easy. If you are too easy to get, she will not want you. If you are too easy to keep, she will lose interest in you. If you are too easy to control, she will not respect you.

I don't think the Naga is going to be in Chicago this may. I think they are actually having it in milwaukee wisconsin if I am not mistaken. I think they are having a Naga in Chicago in November. That being said I am a bluebelt now and seeing how everyone at Naga sandbags I know I am not ready to compete at that level. I could do beginner no-gi but than I would be sandbagging like 85% of the competitors at Naga. If your a bluebelt you have to compete in intermediate.

If its in Chicago I will go to support my team and maybe I will get in there to compete. If there is a Naga in Chicago we could have a few afterwards for sure.

I didn't realize that naga "midwest" moved around each year, or that tournament and "naga chicago" were two different events. They have a lot of tournaments. The guy who owns naga must be raking in the cash.

The "skinny" thing goes for pretty much all the fighters of lighter weight. Boxers are mostly skinny, too.

WEC is only on "Versus" right? Which I guess is a cable channel I don't get. Maybe my local sports bar gets the fights...

Yea but some of those guys are just downright scrawny. Like "eat a cheeseburger dude" scrawny. I wouldn't wanna tangle with 'em though. Some of the middle weight dudes are built like little tanks. The 5'6-5'9" guys.

Yea, the WEC is on Versus. It's a sister to UFC that concentrates on lighter weight classes so you get a lot of action. It looks like Bowles is going to fight Torres next. THAT should be a good fight. Bowles is a Georgia country boy but he can kick some serious ass.

Faber is another freakin monster. There's a rematch between him and Brown on June 7th. Right after I get back from London....perfect. That's gonna be another amazing fight.

Some good fights last night. Too bad you don't get VS. I was browsing the HD channels I get and lo and behold....I get Versus and they televise all of the WEC. I think the WEC fights are going PPV starting summer. That sucks. I like watching the UFC too, but I'm not paying $40 for it.

Edit- Just checking out the WEC website. It's http://www.wec.tv

My 2 cents on the matter:

All this UFC, fighting garbage is classless. Bunch of genuine idiots who get off on pounding each others heads in. Real smart. Let me get my nose broken, a couple of teeth knocked out, a couple of broken bones that will more than likely give me problems in the future, a few facial scars(all so I can look uglier), etc., so I can be cool. Yeah, real cool. Sure. Like I said, a bunch of classless, uncivilized barbaric animals, in a jungle environment.

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.

Have you ever trained in a martial art? Have you ever even played a sport? My guess is probably not. MMA is a fairly safe sport. In my opinion its much safer than boxing and football. The majority of these guys are college educated and if you talk to them they are great people. Alot of these guys are former division 1 wrestlers who had no outlet after there college wrestlin g career was over. MMA is the ultimate sport of mental will power. If you ever sat down and talked with MMA fighters your opinion would change. Some of the best people I ever met I met them through MMA and I am sure Biblebelt will agree with me.

I can't speak about MMA, as I don't know anything about it. What my post was directed at, was the UFC.

I actually used to take martial arts. Tae Kwon Do. I went up to a green belt with 1 or 2 red stripes(can't remember, it was so long ago). I started Karate when I was 8, and continued on and off with it for years. Aside from that, I used to play Baseball. Stopped playing ball when I was 13, due to a fear of the ball, as pitches started coming in at faster speeds. But I was GREAT at it, even at martial arts. I've always been a very agile, athletic guy. During my freshman year, I became submerged in music, started singing and playing guitar and playing in bands. The only somewhat athletic sport I currently take up at the moment is Surfing. I used to Snowboard as well, until I realized I hated the cold. I've always been physically agile and coordinated.

A lot of people do feel this way. It is the mindset that mma has to overcome if it is to be more mainstream. Curiously, many people who find mma to be barbaric don't have any ill will towards boxing, when it can be every bit as barbaric. Boxers get brutal cuts, broken noses, eventual brain damage...the injuries are just as bad as mma, with a lot more long term brain damage due to repeated thumping to the head and the ten-count rule. But boxing has been around for a long time, and people generally accept it.

fwiw, some people confuse the two acronyms, but UFC is like the big leagues of MMA. There are a lot of regional fight events like the ones I fight in, but we are the minor league amateurs. If an amateur is good enough, they eventually turn pro and get paid a few hundred bucks to fight. Then, if they keep winning, eventually the chance to fight in a UFC event will come along. There are a few other "big leagues" of mma besides UFC, like Affliction, but they struggle to stay in business, like EliteXC.

I agree that mma is violent, but it is typically pretty classy as far as violence goes. MMA has adopted the martial arts ethic that every match begin and end with respect. Often fighters will help each other up between rounds. My fights were no different. My first opponent and I are buddies now; we were drinking at the bar after our fight. There is a lot of mutual respect between fighters. And I think that is surprisingly civilized.

Far as I'm concerned, I'd be more than happy to watch bears lions and unarmored men with short swords all go crazy in a pit. The ancient Romans knew how to provide quality fun to the masses, and regrettably too much of society has seemingly shifted away from the golden age of entertainment.

Never try to read a woman's mind. It is a scary place. Ignore her confusing signals and mixed messages. Assume she is interested in you and act accordingly.
