I'm a 15 year old going on 16 in a month or so. I'm interested in self-defense...um...due to people kinda harassing me verbally, and I can deal with those, but lately, its been getting physical. I play tennis, and I run/lift weights (pfft....not really lifting much). I want to know if its too late to start training for martial arts self defense classes. Please tell me about any forms of martial arts you know like aikido....kung fu....ninjitsu...and other self defense stuff.

I wanna be strong enough to protect myself and others. I don't wanna be like schwarrzenegger. Looking for a strong, sleek body. I'm 152lbs. and I'm 5'9". I have a some kung fu background...but that was WAYYYY back in like 6th grade. lol. I need it now. I still can kick some ass with the staff (recently put down 3 baseball peeps. I used a hockey stick).

PLease help. I wanan DEFEND, not KILL. Thanks a lot. This means a lot to me.

Just tell them to leave you alone.. well it sucks, those punks don't know what's the true feeling of anger and sadness. They think they're tough.

... Imo, lifting is much more important than tennis.

Well strictly speaking, without bringing those ring-fighting types of art, sport art in particular. Pick the two choice:
A) try out ALL the art and see what you like
B) try the following art that in my experience seem to be very effective in killing/disabling an opponent -
1) Jeet Kune Do
2) Krav Maga
3) join the military... I never got to join.. guess it's a way for me to find out what they do
4) get a punching bag and hit it
I wanna be strong enough to protect myself and others.
I don't wanna be like schwarrzenegger.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

Cool. I always had a love for nunchaku, to this day I own with nunchaku. My trainer (three of em) tried to attack me with sticks during a sparring session. I took em all out with two nunchakus. I felt like Bruce Lee. Mwahahaha!

From experience as I said, most art I know are either to kill an opponent or be used as a sport activity.

Either that, if you're really afraid of hurting your opponent, you might as well try regular karate or tae kwon do. That's their purpose anyway, "defend your opponent, I'll teach you a secret move and you can disarm any opponent!" :p

Hahaha!! That didn't sound right.. "punks came with a bat" then "I rape with a hockey stick". Hahahaha.. omg that's funny.

Anyway yeah, nunchaku is probably the next most destructive weapon next to a gun. With a gun I can get through even the President. Nunchaku, w00t. You can fend off punks and anybody.

So this is my personal belief, give someone like Bruce Lee two unbreakable nunchakus and a bottle of water, they can handle 1,000,000,000 people going at them.

I bet you Bruce Lee can pile up a wall so that he can have his drink. :p

maybe....but guns...meh. lots of people are good at guns (seals, sas, gign, gsg-9, swat).

Where'd you learn how to use nunchakas? Are they allowed in school? I sure as hell know a ****ing staff isn't :(

Still, I was lucky I found a hockey stick. Pulled some Neo **** on their punk asses.

Lol, exactly what I said in the last paragraph except it's rephrased.

Judo goes along well with karate, tae kwon do, and a few others.
Good luck you guys! :D

Just don't come to me or any other professional fighters and challenge us, know who your friends are. Cause you will feel high and feel like you can take anyone out after you take some lessons.

What titles do you hold? In which MA circuit? Whats your record?

Judo is awesome, its great fun to train and itll do alot to your physical "infrastructur" as I like to call it. It also teaches you breakfalls which are basicly conditioned responses to any type of falling, those are very practical to.
Even though Judo is marketed as a defensive art, anybody who has some experience it it will tell you that it can be used offensivly quite nicely, otherwise how could judo competitions work if nobody ever went offensive?
Basicly think wrestling with more stand up fighting.

the type of martial arts training you wanna do also depends on the kind of body you want/have.

like ultrashogun said, judo is basically wrestling, from a fitness / fitness requirement point of view. You wanna be stout and muscular for it, while a lil body fat doesnt really hurt. and the falling comes in handy.

Karate needs and builds much leaner, tougher bodies with zero body fat but not overly muscular either. Taek Won Do is primarily kicking and also requires leanness and speed over muscle mass.

Personally I am doing Ju Jutsu (not Jitsu!) for about 18 months now (2 times 2 hrs / week). JJ is a german invention though, about 40 years ago the best german grandmasters of aikido, karate & judo came together to create a form of martial arts that is highly effective on the street and combines Atemi karate techniques with judo throws and falling, capoeira, wrestling and judo on the ground and some aikido combos, as well as various other kicks etc... its so effective in fact that the german police is required to learn it. (not to Dan level, mind you, but still.)

basically, test them all, but keep your body in mind! if you're build like a thug you'll be miserable at karate and if youre skinny as hell forget about judo as you're gonna get killed (its more about muscle than most other martial art styles)

Dont mess with Judo, a lot of the techniques are effective only with the gi on not to mention that it's only a watered down version of the actual survival art form, jujitsu.

Judo's main emphasis is on the throw and things like submissions, (arm bars, leg locks and chokes) are secondary. You should try something like Japanese or Brazillian Jui-Jitsu and improve your grappling game all around not only on taking a perosn down, but keeping the guy down for good.

And no, 16 is not too old to learn judo.

Actually, judo primary emphasis is on the throw (Ippon). When another player thows the opponent their back lands flat on the mat, the match is over. The actual ground fight doesnt last very long, as both players are brought back to standing position after so many seconds on the ground.

BJJ, on the other hand, has takedowns but the real fight begins when the fighters get on the ground. The main focus is on the submission, however you can attain points by getting certain positions like guard passes, and placing your knee on their stomach, or reversals (sweeps). Things that youre not going to find in Judo. Also, unlike judo, BJJ is more of a waiting game where youre looking for openings on your opponent whereas in judo you can get called and penalized for stuff like stalling.

I would still reccommend the art form that most translates into street combat. Ju Jitsu whether its BJJ or Japanese JJ (they also have their differences) closely resembles more of what youre looking for from a self defense standpoint AFK.

Not all Judokas train primarily for Judo type competition, some train for self defense, some train just for fun and some take part in BJJ competitions and win.

..... uh... well.. that's like saying not all karate trainers train for an open-hand competition... that's the purpose of Judo, to train for Judo type competition.

Not all do.

that's the purpose of Judo, to train for Judo type competition.
That doesnt mean you cant change the focus of your training, in Judo there is everything have in BJJ, is a Judoka wants to take part in a BJJ competition then he will focus on what he needs.
