Some of these bombs didn't go off, either. But one thing that the IRA was known for was timing their bombings to allow for MINIMAL civilian casualties and phoning warnings ahead to police to further minimize casualties to civilians. These attacks do not match the IRA's M.O.
Like in Omagh or Guildford or Birmingham? The IRA targeted civilians more than a few times. To put it in perspective, in 1973, the year the IRA began their bombing campaign against English targets, there were 37 bomb attacks in London. Not nearly as many people died because they did attack high-profile targets in an attempt to scare rather than maximize loss of life. They were calculated murderers most of the time but they were cold-blooded murderers nonetheless.

Omagh wasn't the work of the IRA, it was the work of the Real IRA who are an extremist offshoot of the Provisional IRA.

Let's also not forget that in 1974, in the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, the Loyalist paramilitary group the UVF, with the assistance of British intelligence, massacred 34 innocent Irish civilians so it's not like the British were the only ones who suffered. Let's also not forget the British Army killed innocent civilians on Bloody Sunday.

I'm not defending the IRA, merely putting into perspective that The Troubles were a very bleak point in time.

The IRA would not be so stupid as to bomb London as they would destroy Sinn Fein's electoral strength.

Oops, you're right about Omagh. But as far as republican terrorism goes, it's all the same. And I know loyalist terrorism is the flip side of the same awful coin, but there's no reason to bring that up. I just wanted to correct the perception (a very common one here in America - just ask Ted Kennedy or Peter King) that republican terrorism is somehow better or more noble than Islamist terrorism.

Not more noble, but different in degrees. There is a difference between setting off a bomb on a commuter train at rush hour in the middle of the work week and setting off a bomb in a financial district on a Saturday morning and calling the police ahead of time to warn them.

The point about Loyalist terrorism is that it was helped a great deal by British intelligence. The IRA did bring the war to the British mainland but the point is, the British brought the war to the Irish mainland. The Northern Ireland State discriminated against Catholics and looked the other way when they were treated worse than Protestants. This sparked an IRA campaign in the sixties and seventies and the civil rights marches. At Bloody Sunday, civil rights protesters were shot dead by British paratroopers.

Are you aware that the British army was originally welcomed by nationalists in the North? They thought they would treat them better than the RUC and the Northern Ireland State. This was not the case.

The point I'm trying to make is that alot of what stemmed with Irish Republicanism was brought about by harsh treatment given by the Brits. Look at the division of Ireland. That was inflicted upon the people without a referendum or anything.

Thankfully, Anglo-Irish relations have improved and the situation for nationalists and unionists in the North is now alot better but what happened in the seventies was a conflict situation whereas these Islamic terrorists just seem to be killing for the sake of Jihad.

If they bombed Bush, Blair and the advocates of the wars, I wouldn't care. You reap what you sow. Yet it's always the innocent who suffer, and in Britain most protested against the wars anyway.
Were the people that died in these attacks, not 'innocent'?

What exaclty is your definition of 'innocent'?

Are the coward bombers, who RAN from their own destructive bombs, are they innocent? Or maybe they are heroes in your eyes?

If this thread doesn't get closed now that I have replied, I will be amazed. And hopeful.

Hey, give me credit, at least I didn't engage Casanova.

Um.... he SAID that it was the innocent who suffered.

He's saying that it's always the innocent people who suffer for the actions of the not-so-innocent.

Is this some fvcking revelation? Is this not a FACT since the begining of time? Am I the only one that gets this? The innocent ALWAYS suffer, ie:(nice guys) 'to pertain to this site'.

I ask that you tell me who the 'not so innocent are'? Please recall who it is that provide you the right to speak. Who are they?

Crowes, as much as you would LOVE it, I am not having a political discussion with you.

I don't want to talk politics w/ you, Cas. You'll make me puke if we do. I don't enjoy throwing up.

I simply asked a question which you seem afraid to answer. Stop skirting the issue.

Your question is directly political.

I don't know why this thread was resurrected, but I'd just like to reiterate that all Irish republicans are terrorists.
