I mean, honestly, would you rather those statements get made or that a thread like this gets locked?

It doesn't seem right that some people are allowed to make political statements and not others. But any rebuttal of points being made will surely prompt a debate that will almost certainly get out of hand, particularly with an issue as charged as this is.
Oh come on. You can't be serious. This is a MAJOR event that just happened and doesn't need to be political in any way. Only one person (Jariel) has made a political comment that someone could disagree with stirring up a debate. All the others are just speculation as to why the attack may have occured. Nothing wrong with that at all. I think Antichrist's post warning against political discussion in this thread is enough. If for some reason it gets out of hand, then fine, close it. But there is no reason why we shouldn't be able to discuss such a large and tragic event that has just occurred.

USA on orange alert now. They are even upping the police presence in Hartford near the state capitol.
Yeah, I was on the highway driving through Washington DC today and they had a police checkpoint, and they were checking one out of every few cars.

Hope everyone in London is doing okay.

The fact that you're posting this means that's what we're doing, genius.

The one thing I kept saying about these people when the war was about to start is true... they are just a different kind of crazy than people like the British or the Americans.
They are the exact same kind of crazy.

Come on man... get over it. The thread is already reopened. Spend more time doing what you wanted to do in the first place (sending sympathies) and less on how 'we' (as moderators) are as people.

Yeah, but if it were up to you it would be closed. That's what I was saying.

Anyways, I'm not going to say any more because I don't want this thread to get closed because of some stupid disagreement.

And hopefully everybody stays away from politics in this thread and proves that it shouldn't be closed. That's what I'm saying.

I just think the hole jihad thing is some man made bullsh*t to control people to do what they want, these suicide bombers are just so effed up people, if u want to make a point by taking a life then take ur own godamn life without taking any other human beigns life...

Osama should burn cuz hes using the poverty of the afghany people to make a just case out of his own hunger for power and need of feeling important...
The holw thing is just so messed up and beyond control, only way to make it go away is to finnish what bush has started, even though i think hes a giant dillhole and should end up wit osama....

We dont know whos really behind the terrorists acts , pehaps osama is just a public figur for the real man that has his own agendas...

I'm glad that the British public isn't shaken up by this... I heard a quote by an oil trader in London saying "I think most people are worrying about how we're going to get home tonight, and not thinking about whether or not we go to work tomorrow, because we will", and then the radio program said that all investment banks will be open, as well as the market and that life will go on.

As for the olympics thing, no, the attack was probably coordinated with the G8 summit in Scotland.

A Different Perspective...

While I'm shocked and dismayed over this incident, I think a little needs to be said about the real risks in life.
The risk of dying in a terrorist attack is still statistically very small compared to many other ways of shuffling off this mortal coil.

In 2001, 16,652 Americans were killed - not by terrorists, but by fellow Americans - drunk drivers. That's five times the number slain on 9/11.
And a similar number have perished on the roads since then, every year.
Since 2001, Al Queda hasn't killed one American on our soil.

Today Michael Chertoff, head of Homeland Security, told us to be extra-vigilant as we commuted to and from work.

He mentioned suspicious people and packages, but nothing at all about the killers sharing our roads, lurking behind the wheel...

Trying to equate the two is a false argument, for obvious reasons.

Also, Al-Qaeda might have had an alternate plan to bomb France instead if they had won the Olympic bid.

This kind of sh1t is just horrible.

Maybe someone else has read the news, but has anyone claimed responsibility? Are they just blindly accusing the extremist muslims or do they have any evidence? I don't know alot about terrorists but there ARE other groups like the IRA, which there relation to England IDK. I should read the news more =P

Derek,

I'm not trying to equate the two.
I'm making two points here:

1. For those who start worrying about this - it's fine to be vigilant, it's fine to worry, but please keep all of the risks of life in context with this one.

2. Political leaders usually use tactics like this to exploit our fears and justify any kind of suspension/alteration of basic civil liberties.

This is so wrong.

The part I never understood about Al Quaeda is that they are so upset about US & British policies, yet they kill the people who had nothing to do with making those policies.

If they were smart, shouldn't they go after the big willies instead of the innocent average joe? I don't know too many politically powerful people, but I am pretty damn sure they don't take the subway

Damn terrorists. Not only are they barbaric, but also incredibly stupid.

EDIT: Unless the terrorists are employed by governments to control its population. A notion often harbored by conspiracy theorists, which I shudder to even entertain. :(

What the hell does drunk driving have to do with the London bombings????? And what would give someone the motivation to post the connection.

On face value it seems like a cogent argument. But once you really think down the whole situation you'll come to certain conclusions:

- The fact we haven't had such terrorist mess especially after the wars in afghanstan and iraq means we're doing a damn good job at protecting our countries. Dont think for a damn second these people would kill 5 times or more that number of drunk drivers given the capability to do so

- The difference between this is in one instance the cause of it is alcholism and bad judgement.

The other is a cause to intentionally kill us and propagate that means as much as they possible can.

The difference is that drunk driving won't blow up power plants killing millions or have objectives to destroy gov't infrastructure if had the chance.

But what civil liberties are being suspended/altered?

None. Nada. Zip.

Now, if you said our leaders used/exploited gun violence to alter 2nd amendment rights, you'd have a legit argument.

It wasn't the Irish (the Provos or CIRA) because #1 the irish don't target civilians. They target the economic structure and the pocketbook of the british government, and have cost billions of dollars of damage. The also assasinate british army officials or former soldiers ie a member of the british army was shot in london a couple months ago and died and it was because he was involved in bloody sunday. #2 I believe this is waaaaay more than the P/CIRA can handle. Half the times their bombs don't go off.

Some of these bombs didn't go off, either. But one thing that the IRA was known for was timing their bombings to allow for MINIMAL civilian casualties and phoning warnings ahead to police to further minimize casualties to civilians. These attacks do not match the IRA's M.O.

Its looks like it is an Al-Qaeda wannabe or independed cell. The scary thing about it is you got young men who are brainwashed by this movement and they do not need instructions from far away or above on what to do. They can just get together, build home made bombs and commit terrorist acts all in the name of Al-Qaeda.

The terroists do not need to be infiltrated anymore because they are all home-grown.
