After being in the university for over a year now, I have been slowly getting more confused about my purpose in the system.

The issue is that I really don't know what I want to do. As of now, I am a science major, but can barely see me as a scientist. I am not saying that I don't enjoy certain areas of science, but it is not to the degree that would make me want to make it a living. Like many students, I chose that course really because I was "pushed" into it by family and society.

However, although I don't feel this is the right track for me, I do not know WHICH track IS right. This makes me feel like I am sitting in class listening to some teacher lecture for a couple hours (which sucks, btw), for nothing. In fact, during most of my lectures, I would rather be in the gym working out or wrestling.

Don't get me wrong; it's not that I don't enjoy learning. In fact, my interests are varied, and I do enjoy studying the academics. However, as a career, I don't see myself going into any particular area. For instance, I enjoy reading history, but I don't see myself as being a historian. Mathematics is interesting, but being a mathematician is not my goal.

In the past year, I have felt like my real desire is to go into business, to form something, to build something. It is not the possibility for money that attracts me to this, but the adventure that seems to go with starting my own small business. But here again lies the issue of not being able to pinpoint how I should pursue this desire. Would going into business school really do much here? I know many business grads who end up toiling for hours in exceedingly monotonous jobs.

And again, it's not that I don't have any "long-term" goals. I aim to be financially independent. And I am education myself by reading books and speaking to people so that I can eventually achieve this goal. But more importantly, I want to end up doing something that I enjoy.

So I am wondering if anyone else is in a similair or slightly similair situation as me in terms of being in college or a university, but lacking any concrete direction as to where you want it to take you.

My academic advisor told me that a college education isn't really worth that much, that I should pursue other avenues to make money, that college is only good for avg ppl who lack drive.

Stay in school if you can make good grades, but lack of motivation often will lead to a slumping gpa. It is much better to not be in school than to be getting bad grades.

If you have sales skills, there are many jobs that pay very well. From vacuum cleaners to cars to insurance, there are always some salespeople consistently making over a grand a week.

You might also consider a technical or trade school. They often take less then four years, and have a very good guarantee of at least a decent job upon graduation. As just one example, aircraft mechanic school is I think less than two years to start out, but they start off making about $40K+ right away. People tend to turn up their noses at the more blue-collar work, but any job can be the starting point from which you begin to build the skills and contacts to later start your own business.

I like to try everything before I decide.

So if you want to go into business as a career, try starting your own business, and see how it goes. Ignore success, and just work on the "do I want to do this for the rest of my life"?

What alternatives are there to college though? I mean of course there are alternatives, but are they really that safe?

well, none of us endup doing what we dreamed of when we ware in highschool or in college.

your pobelm is; you haven't found your self (ya i know, DEEP:p ) You are on your own here. ask your self; what are you all about? and then try to define it. eventually it will hit you and you'll know what you are all about and what you want to do with your life.

Major in integrative studies. IS majors have the option of developing their own curriculum.

Or you could enroll in the school that I'm creating. My school will give the nonconformist real life skills in public communication, business,, accounting, social psych, RE and persuasion . My classes will not be based on theories, but on applying the above subjects into a profit building business.

Classes will be lecture/seminar/ QA style, without any tests.

My only requirements are that students should have the reading and writing skills of an undergraduate college student. Graduates will have the option of joining my side business...

What do you think???

My goal is to destroy the middle-class mindset. Despite what OUR parents say, a college degree isn't that special.

My goal is to be operational in the next 7 months. My long term goal is to have schools in every major city in North America.

Good! That’s college at work! Personal development and gaining a broader, more enrichened view of the world is the reason to attend an university. College is not about job training—that’s what junior college and technical schools are for. After all, half of college are general education classes so that you, the college student, can explore different disciplines. That is to the credit, not disadvantage, of college. To put it another way, all Ivy League schools such as Georgetown require all students to live in a dorm during their freshman year, even if they lived across the street with their parents. The point is to teach students about life.

Oh really. How about doctors, lawyers, anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists, chemical engineers, rocket scientists, FBI agents, CIA operatives, Supreme Court justices? Where would they be if they blew off college?

We were discussing wealth. A college degree does not prepare a student with the skills to become wealthy. I think nursing majors are the only ones who KNOW they will have a job upon graduation-- scarcity.

People do not attend college in order to become well rounded, they attend because it is the prerequisite for most professional semi-well paying jobs. The careers that you mentioned do not always produce wealthy workers. FBI, CIA, LAWYERS PYSCHOLOGISTS....... are all jobs (careers) that come with a boss, salary limitations, and take up your life- they all have a glass ceiling.... College isn't for the entrpreneur. There has to be a better way to educate us who want to fully participate in this capitalistic society....

Everyone isn't a job seeker...

I told the following today, to a woman:

¨Do you know how to cook?

Did someone teach you?

She says her mom taught her, but she mostly did all of it

Ok, I suppose you´ve learned tons of new recipes and you continue to look for more, and learn about new tastes and dishes.

Yes...

Ok, take that interest and enjoyment you have towards cooking and multiply it 20 times. That is what I have in what it is that I do.¨

Not only does a carreer not mean money, you can teach yourself a lot of the carreers out there. Guaranteed, if you want to be a ****ing surgeon, you better go to school. But if you want to be a ... (nutriologist), banker, whatever, you can teach yourself.

I also told this woman the following:

¨I have a cousin that goes to a guitar university. I mean come ****ing on! What can they teach him that he couldnt by himself! Same goes with most degrees, if you only have the discipline that comes when you really love what is you are doing.¨

College degrees (undergraduate) are becoming more useless with each passing year. Years ago, only the best students were accepted into college and now our socialist government believes that everyone should be educated! I worked in the admissions office at my university and it was disgusting just how many non-deserving students were admitted and how many qualified students were rejected.

The tree huggers who believe that everyone should have the chance to attend college are only hurting themselves. As you can see, with the overabundance of people with a degree--entry level wages are lowered and the job market is flooded with college educated people (lack of available jobs). Today's college education is so inferior, because it's filled with individuals who do not deserve to be there!

For the individuals who seek non-technical degrees, i suggest bypassing college, getting a real estate license, working for a top agent for a year, and start making money. By the time you are 21, you will be making six figures if you’re diligent and relentless.

..........BTW, there is no cap on an attorney’s income........i don't know where some of you get your information?

Channel your excited feelings into positive thoughts and behaviors. You will attract women by being enthusiastic, radiating energy, and becoming someone who is fun to be around.
