Joker Sequel: Most songs were bad, the story falls apart every time it looks like its gonna start to get good and the ending was dumb af. 3 out of 10.

The Penguin tv series on the other hand is so good. At least 8 out of 10

I haven't seen the first Joker yet...is it any good?

Also random question, have you seen Clint Eastwood's The Mule? Is that one also good?

Some aspects of it were great, they are not central to the story but added allot of spice that made it an experience to re-watch:

1) The late 70s, early 80s aesthetic of NYC. It is a modern movie that feels like a time-capusle with how they made that.
2) Joker's having hallucinations of a fake gf was deeply touching.
3) The kills, especially the first one, was really gripping...like you are totally into a type of self-defence/aggression sequence that it's disturbing.

When I looked at it, it was pre-pandemic, on streaming (just outside the cinema window but digitally available for rentals), and lost interest after the pandemic and afterwards (ie in terms of re-watching it).

It was okay. None of his recent movies were better than Gran Turino (2008). They are watchable movies but they don't have a punch like that one did.

If you open up TWO youtube pages. Take the song below. Put it on the background

Open the other youtube page on this link with the Joker dancing down the stairs and running away from the cops after that first self-defense kill thing I was talking about -- put this video on MUTE but play the other song above as a sound track.

It's leads to an nice experience....for some reason that song resonated allot with me when the Joker was released in cinema and when I watched it at home. There is something about that song, while totally unrelated to the movie, that captures the vibe of that movie in an interesting way (haven't checked the lyrics, but now I'm talking more about the vibe and some obvious lyrics from the chorus, etc...).

You know, when I first read this, I thought you were talking about the sequel. And I thought, that is one huge spoiler. Could be quite a twist for the second movie, if Harley was a hallucination!

I really liked the first movie, even though I don't think it really feels like the Joker character from Batman, it's more like Taxi Driver.
I hear the second movie isn't doing well at the box office. I blame Gaga.

In a wierd way it is a spoiler (ie apologies for not saying "spoiler alert") for the first Joker movie. However, I don't feel the hallucination thing is a true spoiler because it is a nuance you might only pick-up if you re-watch the first Joker movie a few times or are really into that. If you are there just for the action rather than going in very deep, it's actually a plot-point that people would likely miss or not care that much about. It's a more of a "whatever" plot point than anything serious. If anything, this might make it easier to understand on the first viewing.

I actually missed it on my first viewing of the movie. I had to look at a video movie review, after the fact of wathcing it the first time, for it to sink in that it was a hallucination, because it didn't even click. The movie really has allot of moving parts and it's a nuance that will be missed on a first viewing, even though I'm making it sound serious on paper.

In terms of the Joker character, it's one of the most romantic anti-hero portrayals of that character. It's like you feel sympathy for the Joker character and feel he's like a unfortunate incel guy who had a rough life, allot of set-backs, that snapped and turned mad and morphed into that character. That's why there were warnings about the movie when it was played in cinema.

Personally, I think the Gotham TV-show has the most interesting portrayal for the Batman world (ie Gotham city). You are seeing younger verions of everyone on that show. I felt the best connection to Batman from that show. Movies, like Joker (2019), also inspired interest into this with me because you feel a connection with that character as someone who is for the underdogs. The Christopher Nolan, while he has intersting movies...I was never really "into" his Batman/Joker portrayals. More like a fun action movie with me then anything deep.

I agree it is a very minor spoiler for the first Joker movie, it's a minor plot point. Now if Harley was a hallucination in the second movie (and maybe she is for all I know, because I haven't seen it), that would be a major spoiler, since they've advertised the movie largely on the strength of her being in it.

I really liked the first movie, it just seemed to be the story of a guy who was mentally ill, and he gets victimized and ends up kind of like a Bernie Goetz-type character. Hard to say which version of Batman I like, I like seeing the different approaches that have been taken with him. I like Christopher Nolan's movies, but I liked Tim Burton's movies just as well. Heck, being the old bastard that I am, I liked the old Adam West Batman too. I didn't watch Gotham, because IIRC that didn't really have Batman in it much, isn't Bruce mostly a kid in that?

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.

I hated the first Joker movie. It was essentially a mash up of Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, two great Scorsese films. I won't bother with the sequel. Not sure if it's a straight up musical but it looks that way, and I hate musicals.

Been enjoying the animated Caped Crusader series on Prime. It's 30s/40s Batman. Cool stuff.

I have similar feelings (too derivative of Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy) but I don't 'hate' the first Joker movie. I just don't need to see it again. And, like you, I'm not curious about the sequel.

Well yes "hate" is a strong word. But I disliked it, especially the backstory it told about the Joker. He's had a lot of "origins" but usually they involve a man driven mad by various circumstances. In this movie he seems to be born with a mental illness. Not saying that can't happen but it just seemed to go against the idea of the guy. There's never a fork in the road for him.

It was also a weird choice to make him 30 years older than Bruce Wayne, meaning he's out Jokering vs. the cops until his 60s or so.

I had a bad feeling when they casted her as Harley Quin. I have nothing against her, but I thought she was a bit old for the role. Harley Quinn is supposed to be like 25 or so in the comics, and she´s supposed to be younger than Bruce Wayne. I watched the sequel but I wouldnt blame her, I blame the ending.

D@mn, I loved Gotham. Those versions of the characters are amongst my favorite. Cameron Monaghan absolutely killed it even though they were on a very tight leash for his character.

The Christopher Nolan, while he has intersting movies...I was never really "into" his Batman/Joker portrayals. More like a fun action movie with me then anything deep.
That version of the Joker was a bit over overrated imo. He didnt even laugh. I would take Mark Hamill, Jack Nicholson, or Cameron Monaghan over him any day of the week.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

Seems strange that an ending would affect the box office, although I guess that affects word of mouth.
I really liked the first one, Phoenix did a great job I thought. Funny how the Joker lends itself to great acting, when it's just a comic book character. I definitely want to see the sequel, although I won't go to the cinema, I'll wait for it to come on cable.

I thought it was interesting what Heath Ledger did with it, although I agree it was a bit overrated. Some people will tell you it's spot on with the comics, which I don't see at all. I thought Nicholson's was much closer, although that wasn't really a faithful adaptation either.

Its not just the ending, the movie and the story has many problems. But out of all problems, I guess the ending was the worst offender for me. If I could magically get refunded my time and money for only one movie in my whole life, I would choose this movie.
