Right, so if you ate at 8:59pm it'd be okay? There's no magic time after which you shouldn't eat. Most people tend to cut carbs a few hours before bed if they want to lose weight but I doubt that's necessary for you just yet.
And yes, smaller, more frequent portions are better. Six small meals a day instead of three big ones are superior, since they keep your metabolism stoked and burning calories all day.
