It's not their job to approach, it's yours...
So no issue there, right?
Looking gay, though..? I'm straight, but my roommate is a gay male model--fvcking unreal gorgeous, but obviously gay.
Me? You can tell I'm not just by the way I dress (and I don't dress badly, btw...)
I live near the Castro in SF (Gay-dom's ground zero in the US here..) and basically have a post graduate school of how gays and straights dress walking outside my door. I know the difference, but I'm not sure if I can explain it. If you get the sense--looking at a guy--that he'd be a hot, fashionable woman in another life, he's dressing gay. That doesn't help much, I suppose...
Anyway, one thing I noticed and confirmed with the hot chicks I work with is that 20-something frat boys often have effiminate traits before they hit the real world. The greeks (as they're called here) are so effiminate and gay-like it's funny. They're so into their looks.
The real world--or a real job--will knock the shyt out of them and they'll become more masculine within a few years of leaving college.
What are those signs that strike the rest of us as gay?
1: They spend as much as women do on getting their hair "styled". Regular guys get their hair cut short so that they don't have to fvck with it in the morning before work.
2: They get their hair colored. Regular guys don't--they have no clue what their hair is except "light" or "dark"--or if they took an art class, maybe "blond" or "brown" or "black". Any color sense more complex than that and you've got someone who has a gay sense of color (not a bad thing, don't get me wrong here...) A regular guy usually doesn't care what the hell color his hair is--it's just there, right?
3: They go to fashionable clothing stores and wear the latest fashions designed to attract attention the same way that women wear clothes designed to attract attention. That's subjective, sure, but if you pay full price and wear the latest fashion--you're probably gay-looking.
Regular guys would NEVER DREAM of paying what women do for clothes--there is no justification for it, ever. You get what you like on sale, otherwise fvck it...
...and in same fashion, a regular guy would not ever consider paying what a woman would pay to the the hair "styled". They absolutely wouldn't make an appointment months in advance for it, or know their stylists' name--!!! Regular guys want it reasonably priced (like $15US) quick (like 20 mins or enough time to look at the hot babes in the Cosmo mag they have there...) and look good (usually that means it's short for the minimum "fvcking with it" time in the morning....)
Again--don't get me wrong, looking good and being fashionable is important--but in proper measure. Looking "gay" usually means you're putting as much emphasis on it as a woman would. They appreciate and notice when you have style, just don't do it in the same way they do. Looking "gay" means you probably do...
