Contrary to the illusion many men like to craft, there is not an infinite supply of 20 year old babes crying out for 38 year old fat, low SMV and economic value guys. These guys hit that age, don't have much dating power and so settle for the girls they can date.

And tbh, it's hard to judge them. Because many of these "less attractive" women are perfectly fine for LTRs and the guys end up happy, which is what it's about after all.

This is basically it. Look at older movie stars. There are plenty of guys in their 40's and waaaaaaaaayyy up that score some of the hottest 20 year old's on earth. If you look after yourself as you age, you will continue to have access to attractive 20 year old's. I live in a big city and I see it all the time. It's not common by age alone, because most people don't look after themselves physically and 40 year old guys are no exception, and also good looking 40 year old's are probably married already. But for the rare single guys in their 40's who look good, no problem. Older man with younger woman is a cliche in western society. I wouldn't consider it a contentious concept at all.

I think the one exception would be getting a family. I think most women in their 20's would not settle down with a guy that old. But stranger things have happened.

Also it’s hard to know what the back story is just by looking at couples. Looks matter but for some people looking for something long term there are other things that are important, like personality, values, compatibility etc. Maybe these guys see value and ditched the 9 for a decent 6 who will treat them right. I draw a parallel with debt. The older you get, the less you want it hanging like a burden around your neck. You can afford a bit of debt, but you need to be in control of it... and have it on YOUR terms. Desire is like debt. You can control it, so it does not weigh as heavily on you... as it would for a younger person lacking maturity.

The dating pool of hot women obviously shrinks with age, but an older man desiring a hot older woman has to absolutely screen her harder on her personality as there will likely be more chance of problems there. Yes, you should have standards and seek people that you find attractive, but the attractiveness should not be the only standard or trump everything else.
Yes, fat ugly women can be mean too, and I imagine being treated like crap by a hot women is more tolerable than being treated like crap by an ugly woman lol, but it doesn’t change the fact that you are allowing someone to take your dignity away by letting them treat you like crap. I don't know bro. Back when I was in banking my superior was this 38 year old balding fat guy that hook up with hot new hires from time to time.
