Do you think that men face way higher appearance standards than women do?

Chicks put more time into how they look because that is primarily how they are evaluated, not only by men, but other chicks as well. But really, all most guys care about is if a women is in good shape, she can have a below to average face, which she can fix with makeup, but if she has a nice body... she's going to do find with men.

To actually get noticed by chicks, men have to put effort into how they show up. You have to be in good shape and dress well in clothes that fit you. Like @zekko said, chicks are pickier, not only with us, but with each other.

Nothing you say will make a girl sexually attracted to you.
I'm not so sure that's true. I mean, it may be, but I'm not so sure. An example might be how a woman is impressed by a man's bold action. I can think of some girls I've known who weren't really interested in me, but I managed to get them to see me in a different light.

Now days I would just say "If they don't want me, 'eff 'em", but when I was younger I would work at it if I had to.

The key is to seem open and willing to commit while never 100% committing. It's a balancing act.
Some say that women will go after a certain type of guy when she is looking for a one night stand though. That she will choose a guy who won't commit when she is using a short term mating strategy. Whereas she will choose a different guy if she is using a long term mating strategy.

I had a girl I was dancing with the other night tell me the 3 things she is attracted to were callouses on his hands, white teeth, and he shouldn't ever cross his legs.
I remember hearing a girl making fun of a guy (a doctor, I think) because his hands were so soft. So I could see that.

Regarding crossing his legs, from what I understand that is a regional thing. For instance, here in the midwest, it's okay for a guy to sit while placing his ankle on top of the knee of his other leg. But if he places his knee over the other knee (a lot of Hollywood guys sit like this), that is considered feminine. Used to be a guy would take a lot of flak for sitting like that, now days with the LGBT PC thing, people don't mention it so often.

I wonder if she meant crossing his legs "feminine style" or if she was including the masculine version?

The dude on the left in your pic is probably not really a 5. He's much higher if he took control of his sh*t. Lose weight. Work out. Get on acne medication. Do something with all that hair. Learn to dress. Work on being charming/confident. Smile.
He's a 2
