If you think the martial arts are all about fighting, it shows how juvenile your mind and experience really are.
Well whatever - cultivating chi, being at one with yourself and nature etc, I've heard it before and I'm not impressed tbh.

At the end of the day, it comes down to fighting, hence the name MARTIAL arts. And I stand by my original point that in a world where almost every violent crime is comitted with the use of some sort of weapon, learning a martial art is pointless.

PLUS, not knowing how to fight may save you. Consider this, person one, a martial artist gets confronted by a dude who demands he hand over his wallet. The martial artist tells him to f.uck off at which point the attacker pulls out a knife and stabs the guy in the heart - the martial artist had never been in a fight/wasn't quick enough/came up against a better fighter/whatever.

Person 2, a non-martial artist gets confronted and gives over his wallet, containing a driver's license, a credit card and 20 bucks which can all be swiftly replaced.

Seriously in today's society, I think learning avoiding trouble is a far more effective tactic than learning a martial art.

I think learning to defend oneself is a noble pursuit but honestly is irrelevant given the current social climate, particularly America's flippancy when it comes to gun ownership.

A martial artist, or any man for that matter, who readily jumps to violence has failed already.

I've had a gun and multiple knives pulled on me in high school. They weren't used (because people who normally wield weapons are too chicken sh1t to actually use them) and to think that you'll run into in the social scene is a chance, but unlikely.

You're more likely to get shot in a road rage incident than a bar fight.

Learn a martial art for whatever reason you want.

Self defense, exercise, as a sport, or because doing it looks cool and you want to be able to do what they can do. Whatever.

Don't learn b/c there are lots of women there or b/c someone told you. Learn it for yourself, because you want to.

Come to think of it, that applies to more than martial arts.

Speaking of which...

If so, how can a boxer defend against a crew of 2 or 3 knife-wielding thugs?

Think about it.
Not quite knife wielding thugs. But quite hilarious actually.

To anyone that lives in Southern California around the OC and LA county areas, what are the best schools to attend? I was supposed to take martial arts when I was younger but I was pretty unimpressed with how things were done. Plus the fee was ridiculously large.

I am a brazilian jiu-jitsu practictioner and I love it. It is a way of life and has helped me in so many ways. I am more patient with people. My flexiblility and endurance have improved. I have lost my ego by being tapped 100's of times. Ego is probably the number 1 reason people get into physical confrontations. There is something special about bjj that gives you the confidence in all dealings in your life. Everyone should try it I highly recommend it.

That being said I am not going to go out of my way to take on 5 guys, or to tell a guy who has a 357 pointed at me to go fvck himself. I am a realist and my martial arts training will not save me in those type of situations.

Tell her a little about yourself, but not too much. Maintain some mystery. Give her something to think about and wonder about when she's at home.

If you want to learn an art, I suggest Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. Its a beatiful art that takes years to master. With most fights ending on the ground, learning joint manipulations and submissions is huge.

If you want to learn to defend yourself in the street, take Krav Maga. Krav Maga stresses survival in any fight situation. Any move goes. Eye gouges, knee to the b*lls, biting...anything to survive. Krav Maga also teaches weapons un-arming.

I'm not saying it's not a good idea to start taking martial arts classes, it's a great thing to do, if YOU want to do it. However I don't like people who put it as a cure all for all life problems (without fail causing a heated argument about which martial art beats what). Is learning how to fight going to get you some hot girl? Maybe. If you believe it will. Hey I know I'm being negative here, I did boxing and loved it, but it wasn't for girls, it was for myself. I know lots of 'martial arts guys' and not a lot of them have a lot of social skills. I'm not saying you don't, or you can't do martial arts and have social skills, it just isn't going to give you any.

So go ahead, take it, just don't forget to work on everything else.

Thing is people don't know what martial arts are really about. There are many problems with it too.

Martial arts teach more than fighting, they teach respect, self control, spirit, humility. They help you keep fit and look good and they help you learn how to fight. Someone said because you do martial arts you are likely to tell someone to **** off? The first thing a decent instructor will tell you, is that the best thing to do is run or give them what they want unless you think your life is worth it.

Also, because martial arts have become so popular in modern culture, this leads to a LOT of people doing them. This means that a lot of bad people will do them... I'm estimating that out of anyone that has done a martial art in their life, 10% progress to a high standard (being a deserved black belt). The others give up, or continue being rubbish. Martial arts in the old days were very different.

Do you know upon which martial art this stat is based? I think it would depend upon which art; the number would vary a lot from TQD to Karate to BJJ.

At this point you probably have a woman (or multiple women) chasing you around, calling you all the time, wanting to be with you. So let's talk about how to KEEP a woman interested in you once you have her. This is BIG! There is nothing worse than getting dumped by a woman that you really, really like.

I used to take a standup art in 8th and 9th grade because I wanted to learn self-defense. My Grandmaster (world champion, Korean dude) didn't want us to compete because it really is watered-down and dull. To tell you the truth, I would never pay anyone money to learn Krav Maga and all it's cheap shots. Krav Maga is for jews and b!tches that get their a$$es bonded for $1 million (yes, I said it...J.Lo).

BJJ I would love to take and compete in someday (prob no-gi). My current and newest endeavor is the MMA club at my college, hopefully get comfortable learning BJJ there and then compete spring semester cuz wrestling isn't enough for the ground game.
