Our national perspective on intelligence reveals a profound misconception. This is evident across our culture, from bright children being labeled as “geeks” and “nerds” to prominent figures like a Secretary of State acknowledging America’s “right to be stupid.” We often view educated individuals with suspicion, labeling them as out-of-touch elitists.
Alarmingly, celebrating ignorance is becoming a badge of honor, which might explain how individuals with outdated beliefs like the world is 6,000 years old can attain public office.
Not knowing stuff isn't always someone's fault. Life's not fair, and not everyone gets the same chances, especially with our wacky school system. But thinking it's cool to be clueless? That's gotta change. It's hurting our country big time. I mean, would you want a leader who's proud of not knowing things? You wouldn't get a plumber to fix your roof, so why get someone clueless about economics to run the country's money?
