Only if you follow those absurd cutting/bulking cycles.

I can eat junk 2-3 times a week, but if I gain some fat I can diet it off over time while STILL gaining strength and size. Sucks to be me eh?

Junk food still has essential nutrients (protein for a start), however processed they may be; alcohol offers nothing nutritionally to the bodybuilder (although small amounts can actually be healthy).

And I ask you this. If you had no food, would you eat junk or drink beer?

nothing to do with nit-picking, an ectomorph can get pretty big while staying pretty lean with fastfood(not french fries but cheesburgers etc) while alcohol is only contradicting(except the psychological component) imo.

id start with finding food, or i would do as little activity as possible and not eat junk food.

The cutting I know involves reduced calories, lighter weights and too much cardio; muscle and strength losses are taken for granted - attempts are made to minimise these through a massive 1g of protein per lb bodyweight (in a lovely 1500 calorie diet) - and generally you feel like **** three days in.

Whereas the simple truth is YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LOSE ANY MUSCLE TISSUE OR STRENGTH TO LOSE BODYFAT.

Guys I went to a party on Saturday night, but only had a couple drinks.

Also, I took precautions. I had a liter of water ready to drink when I got home, a protein shake, a banana, almonds, multivitamins, and a cup of cottage cheese ready for me before going to bed.

Even though I didn't drink that much, I actually had a much better time at the party. Rather than getting smashed, I focused more on the social aspect of it and practiced various DJ moves. I ended up having a much better time as well as a more productive Sunday.

Well I'm in a really tough spot right now. I'm 19 going to college. Last year I gained 30 lbs from all the fast food and beer. Well this summer I told myself I was going to start working out and eating good so I can get into good shape. Well I got an apartment with a few other guys and they drink like fish and I was that way last year too. Everyday they drink beer and lots of it. Its sooo hard to not give into my old habits. I started working out the 1st of Aug and I did awesome with workouts and eating. Then the guys showed up and I am starting to drink more and more and just not care anymore.

Anyways I want to enjoy my life at college but I'm still a virgin and I figure I'll have a lot better chance of getting laid if I work out and get a killer body. So yeah I'm in a really tough spot.

From what I've seen to be completely honest it doesn't affect you very much. Like in high school, the people that partied the most usually were the people that worked out. The reason for this is because they were stud football players and great athletes. Which means they were chased by all the women which lead to drinkng binges and parties.

So I think what I'm going to do is cut down the drinking by myself like watching tv and just drink once a week. I think I should still be able to see gains in the gym then.

I find it impossible to have a heavy drinking session on a night out and the next day go to the gym. Infact if i've drunk the night before i've never been to the gym because I can't.

I drink alot though, on average I drink 4 times a week, and I get really drunk not just tipsy. I havn't worked out all that much even though i've had membership for 2 years almost, I'd say i've only gone to the gym for abt 5 months of the membership, but i've still made decent gains. I'm 5'9 170lbs, I've put on a good 30lbs of muscle, maybe if I cut the booze out i'll make better gains

Why can't you all just drink a bit and workout too? There's no reason to get completely smashed.

I'm gaining muscle mass just fine and i get a fairly good buzz about one night a week. What exactly are you getting out of drinking till the point of puking or getting sick or a hangover?

I go out. Get a decent buzz. Have a good time. Maybe 3-4 light drinks (cranberry and vodka usually). I come home.. eat, drink a whey/caseine shake and go to bed. I may be a little sluggish in the morning but i have some water then i'm good as new.

I know it's worse than not drinking at all but i choose not to make lifting my whole life and it's barely affecting anything. Of course i'm not 19 years old and think i have to have 16 beers and do 4 keg stands in order to have a good time and have the courage to talk to strangers.

I usually get pissed twice a week, sometimes more, occasionally less, every weekend without fail.

By jeez it'd be hard to give up, but I do wanna get bigger and slimmer and stuff. I have taken to drinking Low Carb beer though...at least that's a start!?

Define ''drunk'', will 5 beers 1-2 times a week? really affect gains that much? Considering my goal is not to be a body builder, but just to be in good shape with some size. I also have a friend like u described, the guy works out 3 times a week, and gets smashed at least 3 times a week, and is still huge, and his gains never go down. Hes not a football players either, just a normal guy, with good genetics i guess, or steroids that i dont know about

You are young, your metabolism is crazy, draw a line for yourself. Say - I got to the gym 3 times. Eat 6 times and can have 6 drinks a week.

If I miss a meal, or a gym time, then -1 = 5 drinks.

Miss two? - 4 drinks.


I went for a year without a drink once, and it was OK but I didnt become a physical god, In fact i looked worse than I do now. WORKING CORRECTLY IN THE GYM AND DIETING RIGHT IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN GETTING DRUNK - therefore getting drunk alone will not affect you as much, especially at the young age.

wait till you are 30, get hungovers that last 3 days, cant keep fat off and cant have the stamina to workout.

If you bust your ass all week, sure have a few. Getting wasted probably isn't the best idea though. Not only do you screw up your body for a wihle, but you un the risk of injuring yourself from the shinanigans.

Not only that, but timing is important if you insist on getting smashed. If you do a MWF split with Sunday as your totally off-day, Saturday night is probably your best choice for partying... time to recover before getting back into the gym on Monday.

Just recognize that if you're totally intense (I recognize that plenty of guys here are more intense about fitness than me) and focused on goals of physical fitness, your progress will be slowed in proportion to your alcohol-fueled antics.

Best way to get best of both worlds. Go out and have a few saturday night as a reward for busting your ass.

Then make sure you get plenty of rest and plenty of food in your system on Sunday.
