Thanks for the advice. You don't think 2 scoops of whey is too much in the morning? I'm using Optimum Nutrition, it's 24 gr. protein per scoop. I'm not trying to gain weight, just trying to maintain the muscle I have now while I improve my conditioning.
I think 2 scoops of ON in ~12oz. of skim is perfect for us lactose tolerant types, and I stand by that by doing it myself when I don't have time to do something more interesting with eggs. Too much protein should be the least of your worries -- you could do much worse for breakfast.

*sigh* Clearly you've been on vacation from the forum off doing "real things" in the "real world" because I'm pretty sure such posts come at predictable frequency and you just missed / overlooked the last few.

I get about 85g of protein at breakfast...Is that enough or too much?

I heard that you're supposed to front-load your diet, so I get most of my protein and starchy carbs(oatmeal) in the morning.

I'm not sure what you mean by that but I know that there is alot of b.s. I beleived when I first started lifting that I wish someone would have set me straight on. I only speak of what I know first hand.

This is where there is a such thing as too much. Your body can only process so much protein in a certain window, that's why it recommended that you take in about 20-30 per meal anything over that will more then likely be used to make smelly farts.(anyone who takes in a bunch of protein knows what I mean)
Mate, if we only took in 30g of protein per meal, most of us would be stuggling to get over 200g of protein every day...Out of interest, how much protein do you take in most days?

the experience of most guys who've been lifting hard awhile here is that 1g/lb/day of protein is a bare minimum (most of 'em recommend 1.5-2)... and since a lot of us are or want to be 200+ lbs. that means more than 200g of protein per day. For the upper end estimates, even the 135 lb. guys are looking at more than 200. So shaun's question is pretty relevant.....

Yeah, I'm at 130lbs now, and EFFORT set me up on ~240g, and I'M NEVER ALLOWED TO GO BELOW THAT!! :p I'm always getting over 200g per day, I'd never dream of going as low as 1g/lb (130g)..

I eat 5-7 meals a day at around 20-30 grams of protein per meal. Now I switch off between drinking cups of water and fat free milk between my meals.

Not really, people take in massive amounts of protein(over 200g) just to ensure they are getting enough. I have talked to trainers,ex-bodybuilders who even think matching your weight in lbs with grams of protein is nuts. Remember that 60 grams of protein a day is 100% of your daily value,I'm sure that we could get away with only eating 100grams a day(which I did for awhile),but instead we take in 300%+ of our daily value to ensure we muscle repair as fast as possible.

That's if you accept the RDA (now RDI) numbers as an appropriate benchmark. In fact, they were developed as minimums during World War II in anticipation of rationing -- in which case animal & other proteins were sure to be in short supply!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recommended_Dietary_Allowance

Now they are administered by the USDA, which primarily exists to satisfy the needs of agricultural interests -- particuarly the corn-soybean industry (a ridiculous proportion of our calories can now be traced to one or the other). Sorry if I ignore nutritional advice from the farm lobby!

@ Throttle,

I have also talked to 3 pharmacist, 1 oral surgeon(for the heck of it) and a doctor and they all said you would be fine taking in 25-75 grams a day if you are normal. Now if you lift alot they all said more would be cool but when I told them I was getting in 200+g a day they all stopped and looked at me as if I was a ghost or something. Two of the pharmacist warned me of condition(can't remember what the name) that I can develop when I'm older that will basically put one foot in the grave from the extremely high protein intake. When I head back to work(there are a couple pharmacist at work) I will ask the name of the condition what it does.

lol...my best bud is a highly trained oral surgeon, and he'd be the first to say he don't know **** about protein intake. The biggest risks with protein intake are calcium depletion and liver/kidney toxicity. Consume a normal amount of calcium to counter the first, and drink sufficient fluids to combat the latter.

they looked at you like a ghost because that much protein violates their unexamined beliefs about nutrition. They can't tell you the actual effects of that much protein, because no one has studied it and produced a verifiable negative result. I defy anyone on this board to produce evidence that 'excessive protein' is linked to any long term dysfunction in the absence of other dietary deficiencies. For example, the relevant wikipedia article involves a lot of hand-waving -- but not a single citation!

Very interesting. By the way does anyone know the long term effect of elevated creatine levels?

I have no idea what you are talking about. I have no more gas now than I ever did and i get 360g of protein a day.

I personally get gassy and temporarily bloated after 60g+ protein meals, but it only lasts until the morning or the next washroom trip. I avg around 300g/day at 188lbs. Were I to consume 20-30g per meal, that would require 10-15 meals per day!

Ive made great gains since bumping my protein that high. I constantly hear about how too much protein turns into fat, you can only digest so much blah blah blah, my personal experience confirms none of this. I've tried everything between .75g to 2g protein/lb/day, the difference is obvious, though the jump from 1.5 to 2 didn't make the difference I was hoping for.

blinkwatt, how about trying it yourself before arguing against it?

Do you read my post? I don't recommend anything that I haven't expierenced first hand or through close friends. I had a peroid were all I did was pound down tuna and chicken all day long putting me over 300+ grams a day, what a waste.

O.K. you guys don't beleive me huh? Next time you go to your gym talk to the most muscular people you see in there and ask them how much protein they take in a day. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS IN THE GYM,it's how you learn!

F.Y.I. for those of you who take in ON 100% Whey,go look at the back of your tub of protein. Why do you think it says to match your weight lb for gram once, not twice? I mean after all,if they put to take in more wouldn't they sell more?
