In the last few years, I've found myself increasingly interested in this whole zombie phenomenon. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think it sets all other "apocalypse" scenarios apart from this because of the unknown factor to it.
I'm certainly enticed by Romero's visions and lately by Max Brooks' vision of the zombie apocalypse, and the conclusion that I've come to is that what enthralls me so much about it all is the humanity of it.
It seems to bring out the best and worst out in all of us. The survival instinct will most certainly override the human factor yet how many times do you find yourself thinking: If my best friend got infected, I'd shoot him between the eyes.
But would you really?
I guess deep down inside, Romero's visions and the latest visions force us to face the inner us that some of us might not even know exist.
Weird rant in the middle of this thread, and mostly because I woke up today listening to the Battle of Yonkers and then later watched the "news reports" from the Dawn of the Dead remake... the ones where it's just going off on reports all over the world and ALMOST seems realistic.
I find that if it's a meteor we are facing or a huge tidal wave or anything uncontrollable like that, it's easier to come to terms with because it's something out of our control and something that we can't put a face to. But when it's imagining our loved ones, our friends, and people we see everyday, coming towards mindlessly wanting to "eat us"... it's pretty frightening.
