Im pure atheist.....There is no god. Everything in the universe happens within the laws of science....yet we dont fully understand those laws yet.
God is as real as elfs pixies and flying dragons that breath fire.
There is no heaven or hell.....When we die are body shuts down and our mind and consciece ceases to operate again.....not that we would notice because we are dead.
I laugh in the face of all relgious people. I can respect their beliefs aslong as they dont impose thier religious belifs and ideals on me (Which every relgious person does).

I forget which mathematician and famous scientist once said, the chances of the world coming to be the way it is, and everything evolving, creating an environment and the life on the planet the way it is today, is about the same chances as you going into your garage, throwing everything around, and it becoming a car! A big research event conducted at Harvard (I think it was), also went to reveal that these "experts" that can apparently talk to the dead, all experience similar phenominal brainwaves, of which are nearly mathematically impossible. Leading the professors there (who were very sceptical of these "experts"), to beleive they did have some incredible ability.
Sorry I could not be more specific on both these studies, but I remember reading about them somewhere along the line.
Just a few things to think about.
There are also so many other things that are not "scientifically possible" of which occur regularly. I saw a documentary on one man, who was medically dead for 15 minutes after being stung by 3-5 box Jellyfish, something sure to kill you. He then woke up and walked again after being covered over and dead for a quarter of an hour. The natives on the island (I think the Island was called Maricius (or something like that, in the South Pacific), tried to kill him, thinking he was somehow cursed. He was declared dead in a hopsital by qualified doctors on the Island.
There are just some of the incredible things I have seen and read about, of which are further documented, that "scientifically" lead me to beleive there is something supernatural and extraordinary out there. I further beleive all the gods are the same, and all teach of the same simple philosophies, to be a good person.

I have been a pure athiest since i was about 14-16 and started to follow my indervidual thinking. I never really belived in god.
Notice i say "pure athiest". Some athiests belive in "something". I have no relgious belifs whatsoever.
In regards to your remarks CLOONEY. I will except that there is "unexplained" activites that happen around the world that we dont understand.......yet......You also have to take into account that things that were seen as acts of god 1000 years ago today can be explained by science. (Eg. Shooting stars are just fragments hitting the lower atmostsphere at a certain angle that they give off a bright light. They can be the size of a grain of rice.) I agree.....these happenings of today are strange and we cant always understand them at the moment but they will be explained in time to come.....could be a million years. Could be tomorrow. EVERYTHING has a scientific explanation.....Unless we have to adapt our laws of physics
The world would be a much better place without relgion.....I will ask you one thing.....How many wars have been started over "science". How many wars are over "Religion". Go figure. I would stress this point further but i do belive in population control.
Im going to stop now....I have much more I could say on the topic of relgion however i dont want to hurt anyones feelings or beliefs. They have their right to belive in whatever they want as do I.

Just before they close it, I will give my input.
I am an atheist, not the actively religion hating king of atheist, but an atheist nevertheless.
Many people have faith in religion exactly because of the fear of being "alone", being the only person responsible for every choice they make as well as its consequences. So they need a God, an almighty entity to put their faith in.
And it's no surprise that through out history, the most violent and abject atrocities have been committed in the name of God from monotheist religions. From the ancient times to the crusade, to the inquisition, to the 19th 20th century's persecution of the jews. It continues even today with the islamic terrorists.
When I hear many christians say "no matter what you did (murder, rape, prostitution, drugs, you name it), once you find Jesus, everything is fine from now on", it just disgusts so much that I want to puke.
No surprise that nowadays we see gangstas, uber slvts, murderers, religious fanatics, terrorists who claim to believe in God...
Just look at ths forum, so many guys who claim to be "good" christians ask questions abou one night stands, cheating and hookers :crackup:
For me, I think organized religions have the benefits of providing social stability and promote "morality". But nowadays, it seems like the good sides have all disappeared, only the superstitious annoyance remained...

Thing is, where'd the basis of EXISTENCE come from?
What provided the "spark" to even the most basic quarks to eventuate the universe as we perceive it?
How does a masterpiece known as LIFE, come to fruitition without some other being power precipitating it? (I.e. the blank slate of the universe doesn't just create CONSCIOUSNESS as we know it and then brazenly give it a SHOVE and walla, UNIVERSE and life)
What ever said, LET THERE BE LIFE? Think for a minute on that. What set the slate out for the blackness of thought consciousness, which provided the foundation of what is the universe? What, who, or how, said, let there be energy, which would eventuate the universe and the big bang theory, and all other scientific phenomena.
In my estimation, science seeks to perceive reality, with little relevance for WILD thought. It's definition of WILD thought is far too strict to really bring in to question REAL concepts. I'm not overtly religious, though my background is Christian Catholic. Yet, its always boggled me HOW we came to be. HOW, the fundamentals of existence, the building blocks of life just POPPED up arbitrarily. Or are we just someone's dream, that's so real, that everybody else seeks to make it all the more permanent, yet we're not that at all.
The eyes see what the mind, heart, and body want it to perceive. Hypnosis, in a very rudimentary way communicates as much. Beyond that, we can't fathom reality, only with the senses we're given. But what if higher beings had MORE senses, thereby perceiving reality, or the dream state, to a greater degree?
If all life is energy, what if senses were developed that UTILIZED the energy we're bathed in?
I personally don't care what people believe, and it's evident in society most don't either. Belief yields their molding of reality or perception. I just don't get why humans, who utilize 10% or less of their brains, and often react on instinct/emotion first, THINK that we can perceive existence through science, which again was an invention of man to understand his surroundings. Life is TOO mysterious and too far beyond comprehension for us to actually THINK or BELIEVE we can logically "get it." We might get a ship to the moon, but in the world of possibilities beyond that, it's a mere drop in a monsoon.

But for the record I don't believe in a god, and I never will until he/she/it gives me indesputable proof. It's a bit dumb to expect me to believe without proof and I'd think if there was a god he or it would be mature enough not to play such silly games (unless god is a woman.)
However, as long as people are happy and good to others, I respect their faith.

Actually history has proven Christianity is strongly linked with despair and desperacy. The idea of going to "heaven" if you've been a good boy, is an excellent way of motivating people in crappy times.
One of Europe's most religous times, the middle ages, gave rise to Christianity in its most fanatical and extreme forms, because people were not very happy. Let's face it, if you only had a 30-year lifespan, lived in filth, your village was attacked by bandits every few years...wouldn't you cling onto Christianity?
Most peasants in the middle ages lived terrible lives, and their only consolidation was going to heaven.
PS. For anyone who asks "why didn't the peasants just kill themselves to go to heaven", suicide was illegal under Christian regimes.

OK, Atheists, if religion is all bunk, please explain your ideas of right and wrong. What happens when two peoples' ideas of morality conflict? Moral relativism falls apart quickly. There has to be some sort of shared morality for any society to function. But what is the Atheist rule book? How is right and wrong defined?

ok, but then how are conflicts resolved? All I can think of is that is has to come down to some sort of popularity contest. But looking back through history, abolition and civil rights were certainly unpopular at times. A 'majority rule' concept of right and wrong would have said that slavery and Jim Crow laws were moral because they were supported by most people. So shared concepts are part of the process, but how do we tell when the majority of people are wrong?
