It seems like it's taboo to ask people's age in some cultures. In other cultures, such as east asian cultures, it's pretty much one of the first things you ask about a person. In western cultures, it's often never asked. You just try to guess, based upon appearance, or maybe you'll ask in a roundabout way by asking what year they graduated from high school or college.

I have quite a few friends and an even larger pool of acquaintances who have NEVER asked my age and vice versa. Why is asking age such a taboo?

For women who are serious about dating me, some will ask, but many will NEVER ask. It's amazing.

It's honestly a mystery to me. The only thing I can figure is that the culture in the US is so youth-based, that people are ashamed to be old, which sounds ridiculous to me.

I can understand why women might not want to be asked their age, youth is especially connected with attractiveness with women. But I don't know why a guy would be bothered by it. Most guys here say they will lie about their age or avoid the question entirely. Seems a little feminine to me, but eh whatever.

It seems clear that being older is a source of discrimination in western cultures. I assume it used to be the other way around. Perhaps older people were respected as a source of knowledge and authority in previous generations.

Now, with everyone obsessed with youth and beauty and getting laid, you can't ever age past the age of 29 now.

Another little culture shift in a way.
I remember as a kid, it was generally a rule that only applied to women who were clearly like 50+ (don't ask THEM their age)
But as time has changed, there's been a relentless shift towards 'youth = beauty'.
Not surprising considering what we now know of most of hollywood elite and their pedo preferences. Of course they'd push that concept lol.
And porn has shifted to where the most popular porn seems to be 'just turned 18' porn etc.
younger people are sexualised in media and super young girls dress more like porn stars with their heros' being Kylie Jenner instead of some Disney princess lol
so now it often seems rude to ask even a 22 year old! She's already getting self consious of losing her beauty. All girls want to be like 17 as that's the most attractive lol

Western culture obsessed with juvenility because you judged by the accomplishments in your life while the goal of what is this thing that you need to accomplish is not certain

In Russian culture ‘you don’t ask woman her age’ because ‘women are always young’. It makes sense, you are talking to her you about to fck her why you need age for.

It even makes sence in terms of don juan practise, asking age is girlfriend/boyfriend type of question.

As other users said, our culture is very youth oriented not only in terms of beauty but also in terms of "being interesting", generally things that we consider interesting through media are things young people do...add to that that dads are now the butt of the jokes in most movies unlike young guys hitting clubs and getting laid.

There is also the achievement side, apparently being an average person with an average job is not enough to be entitled to humand rights...you have to be a millionaire driving ferraris and living in a mansion while running a multi millions company, needless to say anyone beyond a certain age that didnt reach that point yet may feel uncomfortable.

Regarding women, they expire so early nowadays either physically or mentally, that its not even worth to think about their age...if they pass the boner test they are qualified for being pumped&dumped.

Ps. I dont lie about my age but I try to avoid the topic while dealing with young girls untill enough rapport is made, if you are 10 yrs older the following morning is no big deal while if you are the first 10secs of interaction there is a good chance she wont bother to talk to you.

If you ever give flowers make sure it’s odd number. Even is for funeral.

I don’t know, where does the idea of tipping come from? It’s retarded, you plan for x amount and then it’s more.

Create self-fulfilling prophecies. Always assume the positive. Assume she likes you. Assume she wants to talk to you. Assume she wants to go out with you. When you think positive, positive things happen.

In Western culture, it's only taboo to ask a woman her age. Asking a man his age is just fine.

And no I absolutely do not agree with that double-standard.
