It seems like it's taboo to ask people's age in some cultures. In other cultures, such as east asian cultures, it's pretty much one of the first things you ask about a person. In western cultures, it's often never asked. You just try to guess, based upon appearance, or maybe you'll ask in a roundabout way by asking what year they graduated from high school or college.
I have quite a few friends and an even larger pool of acquaintances who have NEVER asked my age and vice versa. Why is asking age such a taboo?
For women who are serious about dating me, some will ask, but many will NEVER ask. It's amazing.
