Anyone ever been a part of a fraternity? I'm joining one.

I thought it would just be an easy way to get access to all kinds of social events, and I wouldn't have to worry so much about getting into some kind of slump and sitting alone watching television on the weekends which I admit I end up doing a bit more often then I'd like.

It will be a sacrifice in personal space moving into the frat house because I'll probably have 3 roommates my first year. (but I should have only one the next year if the RUSH guy I've been talking to isn't BSing me)

I'm not worried about hazing or anything either. I researched this frat pretty well and they don't haze. All they do is make you get them drinks, you gotta do the bad jobs when housing cleaning comes around (but everyone cleans, not just pledges), and tiny crap like that. Probably one of the most laid back frats on campus. They have dorks who you can tell built their own computers in thier garages from looking at photos of them and members of the football team. I've been told I won't have to take part in any mandatory activities either, but if I'm joining I should want to participate to some degree. So it shouldn't interfere with getting my grades.

I saw a documentary on a "fraternity" on TV a couple of weeks back.

I have never laughed so hard in my life! If one of these things was bought to Australia, the dudes would cop so much sh*t! Can anyone say "high school"? Or middle score I think they call it in the states. Around 12-16 year olds. So funny how serious they took it also, if thats not a creation of the media, I have never seen one before! Do these sort of establishments exist in ANY other country, other than the USA, and perhaps Canada?

Through joining a fraternity, you usually end up finding yourself in certain social circles that only involve other fraternities or sororities. There's that whole exclusivity issue, and if you're looking for sorostitutes and so-hos then look no further. I've had sorority girls ask if I was in a frat, and when I said I wasn't it was one of those 'disappointed' responses, which followed with a 'never see you again'. I was not in a fraternity myself, but our school has one of the larger Greek communities in the country. Most of my friends who were in frats were usually in academic-oriented ones. As much as I hate to say it, they seemed like the "Revenge of the Nerds" type guys when compared to other fraternities. What type were you looking to join?

Spot on here. My girlfriend is in a sorority, and her friends look down on her for not partying anymore, or at least dating a frat boy. The Greek system is so closed off to outsiders, which makes me chuckle. The fraternity boys I know are confused by cause and effect: they think they're in a fraternity because they're cool, when actually they're only cool BECAUSE they're in a fraternity.

Either way, they get a lot of chicks :-/ So it's probably a good move, original poster.

Men frequently err by talking too much. They often monopolize conversations, droning on and on about topics that bore women to tears. They think they're impressing the women when, in reality, they're depressing the women.

The more they haze, the more chicks they get. It's unfortunate, but true. The frats who don't haze end up not being as 'cool.' The Pikes are usually the biggest azzholes on campus, but they get the hottest chicks.

I went through most of a pledge semester and some fairly extreme hazing (not as bad as the Pikes, though), but I ended up quitting in protest because they kicked my buddy out for being too big of an alcoholic. I already had an older gf who thought they were all stupid kids.

One thing I love about frat boys is how they all have something in common. No matter where, when or how they meet, they can always have a conversation like the one that follows:

"Have you ever had x drink? Man, I got so drunk on x drink when I had too much of it."

"Yeah, that'll do it to ya, but have you ever had X DRINK? Shiiiiit, X DRINK got me WASTED. And I had to go to work the next day!"

This is a verbatim conversation I observed.

I was in a fraternity, and it's a great way to meet alot of people, esp. your freshman and sophomore years. After that you start to realize that real friendship isn't made in a frat house. It can be a good thing, but don't get all obsessed with it. Don't think you're better than everyone else, because life goes on after it is over. By my senior year I could care less about the frat, but I made some good friends there.

I'm pretty sure it was a frat guy I was talking to once who said he passed out drunk at some party, woke up and a pizza box was on him, so he ate a couple pieces of pizza and went back to sleep.

Not a particularly entertaining story, but I can just see somebody like that accomplishing SO much in a day...

Frats are ghey. Guys in frats are usually pricks.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

True, but the best girls at university are in sororities, and many of them are heavily prejudiced against non-Greeks. So frat boy pricks get the best girls while they're in college. Interestingly, many of them get married immediately after graduating, possibly because the status of being in a fraternity no longer gets them laid?

Well, some of the posts here dissuaded me a bit but I've still decided to go through with it.

Just because a lot of frat guys are pricks or personality lacking idiots does not mean I intend to become one. In fact I'd think that would give me more of an advantage. I have all the inherent social proof of being in a frat that you get with college girls, but I also have some decent pickup skills and personality to boot.

The one I'm joining is kind of tame, they will give you a bid so long as you come to an event or two and don't make yourself out to be a giant prick from the get go. They have jocks and nerds and everything in between. There are going to be a lot of parties that amount to nothing but drinking involved, but thats not all they do and I'm not going to have to go to all, or almost any of them if I don't feel like it.

Plus to add to all that, it's going to be cheaper for me to join up then to live in the dorms, and they have the second biggest house on campus with rooms that make the dorms here look shameful. High speed internet and all the movie channels all throughout the house. This place is almost worth joining just for the living quarters to be honest.

I think it's a cool experience to go thru. I'm 19 and go to uni and will probably rush a frat next year, after I get accepted into the industrial engineering program.

It'd be fun to experience. Plus, I know quite a few frat guys who are real cool.

What exactly 'links' these frat guys together? I mean, at university we have all sorts of clubs (soccer teams, hiking club, debating club, etc), so everyone has a reason to join. But with these frats, what do they have in common?

Beyond beer and chicks, there is one that is the rich kid frat, theta chi I think. Pikes, who are like a frat to the second power, are preppy *******s who get the hottest sorority chicks. We had another frat that was the stoner hippie partyers, and then there were two others for the dorky kids who needed a club to call their own. Those two did not haze at all and let anybody in.

As a general rule, if a school lets a frat have its own house, then they will haze. If there are no frat houses, it's almost impossible to have hazing.

This is a good observation, since things you see in movies are always 100% true and never stereotyped or exaggerated.
