Father Clings to Life After Brutal Killings

EMORY, Texas (March 2) - Angry that her parents demanded she break up with her boyfriend, a teenage girl helped kill her mother and two brothers during a grisly weekend ambush on the family's rural, wooded home, authorities said Sunday.

The 16-year-old girl joined her boyfriend and two others in shooting and stabbing members of the Caffey family in their bedrooms before setting the house on fire, authorities said, confirming what most in this farming town had known since the pre-dawn attack Saturday.

The lone survivor was Terry Caffey, the father. He was shot five times — including twice in the back — before he dragged his bloodied body through the woods in search of help. He awaited surgery Sunday to remove the bullets, Rains County Sheriff David Traylor said.

Killed were Penny Caffey, 37, and sons Tyler, 8, and Mathew, 13.

"We feel confident that the motive was the fact that the juvenile daughter and one of the individuals in custody were dating and that the parents were attempting to break the relationship up," Traylor said, "which led to the crime that was committed."

The girl, who was not identified because of her age, was arraigned Sunday on three counts of capital murder and being held on $1.5 million bond. Charlie James Wilkinson, the girl's 19-year-old boyfriend, and two others were arraigned on the same charges.

Charles Allen Waid, 20, and Bobbi Gale Johnson, 18, were the others charged with three counts each of capital murder.

Waid, Johnson and Wilkinson were being held in Rains County jail on $1.5 million bond. The Caffeys' daugter was being held in neighboring Hunt County's juvenile detention center in Greenville. Traylor said he wasn't aware if they had attorneys yet.

The killings gripped everyone and everything in Emory, from the Sunday morning church services to lunch conversations at small cafes along the two-lane road running through this town of just 1,500.

Classmates of the Caffeys' daughter and Wilkinson described the couple as inseparable and with few other friends on campus. Stunning most here was the arrest of Johnson, who was widely described as a good student active in theater at Rains High School.

Jennifer McClanahan, a senior at Rains, said that Wilkinson had been scolded during her English class last week for being on the computer. Wilkinson, she said, in turn told the teacher that her girlfriend's father had hacked into his MySpace page.

McClanahan and others described Wilkinson as not really a troublemaker, other than constantly being told to remove the cowboy hat he always wore to school.

"That's Charlie," said McClanahan, 17. "He would start an argument over something like a hat."

Carl Johnson, a friend of the family, said the Caffeys moved about two years ago to just outside Emory. He called them good Christians and said he often told the daughter he wanted her soft singing voice to perform at his funeral.

"(The parents) didn't like the boy and were trying to break them up," Johnson said. "They told me at church they didn't have any use for him."

The attack occurred on about 20 acres of pine-canopied, remote land in Alba on a narrow gravel road with just two other homes. The area is so secluded that even the closest neighbors reported only faintly hearing what sound liked thunder early Saturday, and few saw the blaze.

Authorities said that Terry Caffey crawled 300 yards to his closest neighbor to get help, leaving a bloody trail. He was shot in the head, twice in the back and twice near his shoulder, Traylor said.

The Rev. Todd McGahee of Miracle Faith Baptist Church, where the Caffeys worshipped and were the house musicians, wept and struggled to stay composed during his Sunday sermon.

"When I first heard, I was like, I don't even think I would have crawled out of the house," McGahee told his congregation. "But God has a purpose for Terry's life. God has a reason. God gave him the strength to get out."

One gun and one knife were used in the attack, Traylor said. He would not detail which suspects he believed were responsible for which acts, saying only that all four were there at the time.

Police found the daughter hiding in the home of one of the suspects, Traylor said.

The family members were asleep in their bedrooms when the ambush began, Traylor said. Penny Caffey and Mathew suffered gunshots and stab wounds; the youngest, Tyler, had only stab wounds.

On the Caffeys' wooded plot, the family's black Labrador waited in vain by the ashes of the incinerated house and a burned van for his owners to return.

"There's been a change in this church and a change in this community," McGahee told about 80 worshippers. "And we can't just wish it away. ... It will be the same loss, the same hurt tomorrow. There's been that change in our lives."

This is a very sickening story and makes me sad. I cannot believe that they did this because of getting broken up.

There's a new, insidious level of frustration and anger in today's youth that use to be only found in manics who were twice or even three times their age. Watch your backs everyone...

Sadly its probably the other way around.

Teenage chick is likely an ASPD/sociopath/psychopath whatever you want to call it due to the selfish and callous disregard for life shown here and used her manipulation skills to arrange all of this by convincing the guys to go along with the killings when she couldn't get her way with her parents through words alone.

And you're right the guys will probably get death and she'll play it off like it was the boyfriend's idea entirely and society will believe her.

The mask of sanity fools just about everyone.

poor father, feel bad for him.

In one night, his house was burned down, his daughter became a murderer, his wife was killed, and his two boys were killed.

That's a hard pill to swallow...

Back then "gang bangers" were actually in gangs; they weren't antisocial separatist feeling that everyone was against them. They were just angry, they weren't mentally imbalanced. They didn't start wars against all of society by going and shooting up schools, shopping malls or any random passerby on the street. They weren't able to create their arsenals with merely an Internet connection and a PayPal account. Things have definitely changed.

Then why have things like this been happening since before the time of christ?

I agree that we should all watch our backs, but things like this have always been around. You really can't blame everything on rock music and video games. I've been thinking alot about this recently, and it is something that I have changed my tune on, so to speak. Sure there is violence in the media, but this is a side effect of the current state of society, not the cause. Sadly, things probably won't calm down until we nearly wipe ourselves out and return to a smaller, more primitive social order. The reason why we are seeing so many predators on the rise is because there are too many sheep.

Two completely different things. You're equating wars between functional groups of people with different opinions to individuals who can't cope and decide to take it out on everyone else, people that they don't even know. Individual gangs had solidarity, individual religions have solidarity, countries have solidarity, cultures have solidarity. Gangs fight gangs, religions fight against other religions, cultures fight one another and so do countries. The people we are talking about feel that they have no one, they are isolated and alone. Two different things.

this is key i believe. add to this also the insane media attention a school shooting gets.

columbine was the beginning. those kids set hte example for all the other loners in the world - shoot up a school and you get back at all the peopel who didn't treat you right and you also will catch the attention of the entire country and much of the developed world.

Who was talking about war?!-- You never heard of Cain and Abel, or what? People have been killing each other for a long time now.

My point was that why we have so much violence and murder isn't because of what is on late night television, it isn't because kids are listening to death metal, and it isn't because they are playing violent video games, either-- these are all side effects of a deeper illness.

So you're saying that Cain had an illness?

Call me naive, but to me the only significant change in violence over the last 30-40 years is the amount of media coverage it gets. Crime has gone down in America. Crime has gone DOWN in America. http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/cv2.htm

The best way for the media to get your attention is to make you feel like you HAVE to watch the news. Do you think people who are satisfied and secure are going to watch the news as much as those who have become consumed by parinoia?

When you look at it, this generation is really doing pretty well for Americans. No draft, no direct threat of nuclear war, no depression. Do you really think less people committed violent crimes when all this was happening? Of course not, people just had worse things to worry about.

OK, you're naive. :p
You're not going to take note of the age of the people committing felonies today as compared to 30+ years ago? For a generation who don't need to worry about the draft and maybe not nuclear war. As for depression, maybe not an economic one. But yet in all of these "good times" I bet dollars to doughnuts (I can't believe that I said that) that there are more kids committing felonies these days than 30 years ago.

Wholeheartedly agree with aboleo here. If you've ever read East of Eden, John Steinbeck gives his interpretation of the cain and abel story basically saying that Cain was jealous of the attention God gave Abel, which resulted in his killing abel. Obviously that's just his take on it, but these issues are not new.

Also, the character of Cathy Ames is the epitome of the manipulative b itch who murders to get her way.
